affiliated with a museum that houses both steam and diesel representation), I have to honestly say that steam holds much more appeal to me than does diesel. Interesting to watch the reaction of people as they see the rolling stock we house - it tends to be the steam locomotives that provoke the most positive response. So....my question is; will SSR be running any steam at all this season?? Tourists from all over Canada, U.S. and Europe visit our site and pick up their brochure (case in point - tourist from Germany last week wanting information on running steam excursions within easy driving range; SSR's brochure was the one we gave him. Also people from Michigan, Oregon and Missouri within the last few days). As those are people who will likely never be able to make a return trip; the disappointment (and disillusion) will be the memory they take back with them. If there is no steam there this season, it would only be fair to advise these people before they make the drive there; then, should they still wish to visit, it at least with the knowledge beforehand that they should not expect to see live steam. TUG & BARGE HITS CPR's MISSION RAILWAY BRIDGE-DETOURS

On the radio news in Vancouver at 0700, said the CPR Mission, B.C.
bridge which was open for marine traffic for a tug-barge movement was hit by the barge. This bridge is located running south off the main-line to Matsqui Jct. continuing south through Abbotsford the the Canada-U.S. border at Summas/Huntington interchanging with BNSF. CP coal, Deltaport container traffic to and from Robertsbank Superport which includes Deltaport and the Sumas/Huntington CP/BNSF interchange traffic will be detoured . VIA's east/West Canadian trains 1 and 2 normally cut off the CN line at Matsqui Jct and proceed on CP to Mission and on the CP main-line to Port Coquitlam then on CP Westminster south/west line to and from CP Jct at Sapperton/New Westminster then BNSF trackage to reach to and from Vancouver. Radio news said the CP bridge could be out of service for a month. There could be more news later today through the newsmedia.(News media always stretch things) Don Scott-Coquitlam, BC. |

RailWeb also has Canadian locomotive icons and other TD items free for the download -- see the website (URL below) -- if you don't see what you need, just ask! The CP Laggan Sub is available for free download on the website as are some SOO line territories. I would like to encourage development of more Canadian territories for TD. Steam was king when I was young so I prefer the steam locomotive over the diesel. Many times as a child laying in bed late at night, I'd hear westbound double-headed steam powered freights thunder over the bridge over the Grand River in Galt, smoke stacks barking as they made a run for the hill up to Orr's Lake. To listen as they began to loose speed on the grade then blow the whistle for Blenheim Road crossing..............pinch me! What a beautiful memory.................... Okay, I'll be the contrarian regarding South Simcoe.I'll take the diesel side too. I'd rather watch/photograph a train going by, (steam or diesel, freight or passenger) than ride on it. When I am riding in a passenger car it doesn't make much difference to me what the power is. Maybe if I was riding in the cab eating cinders (or whatever steam fans do) I'd be more inspired by the steam experience. :-) Patrick Lawson |

In the last few years, I've ridden the PSTR, the Tortillard, the WSJR, the ACR, the Timber Train, OERHA at Rockwood, BCR, West Coast Express, GO, AMT, and VIA. I've visited the YDHR to watch the trains there a couple of times, and I went to Guelph to see the WSJR equipment on the GJR. All of these railways have diesel or electric power. I live in Toronto and haven't yet visited, seen, or ridden the South Simcoe. What does that tell you about my interests? And, to comment on what one person said: -----Original Message-----

Just read Bob Boudreau from Saint John, N.B. comments on CP 4-4-0 136. Back in 1958 myself organized an excursion on the former CP Norton-Chipman, N.B. line(Bob and friend from Moncton were there, young at that time, but look how he has progressed in his intererst in railways today-we need more like them to take over when people like myself are gone). CP really went out of the way to make the excursion successful. Besides the usual wood 3200 series combination-coach, one of CP's steel 1500 coaches was dead-head-headed to Norton to handle all the extra passengers. I remember that morning at Norton, crowds of onlookers and rail-bugs. Even Omer Lavalee from CPR Public ReationsArchives arriving almost the last minute with a rent-a-car from Saint John after arriving on train #42-"Atlantic Limited" from Montreal which arrived at 0900. I remember Omer came to the station at Norton on 4-wheels. That was a man that never missed anything that was special going on Canadian Pacific. CP 4-4-0 136 was "spotless-all dolled up for its special day". A good many CP people there to ride the train, retired CP locomotive engineer from Saint John, namely George Brown whom I rode in his cab several times out of Saint John on the beautiful Heavy 4-6-2 semi-streamlined 2390 series and the 2400's, plus the G-2's of 2500 and 2600's. Many people from Nova Scotia like Ken MacDonald from Truro-a very dedicated railfan. From Moncton high-ups in the CN, and from people at former CN shops at Moncton. My father retired after 46 years in railroading. Along the line towards Chipman, places like Youngs Cove Road-the old girl 136 done her switching duties and a number of points, adding cars travelling northbound to Chipman- a 44 mile run. The excursion was a complete sellout. At Chipman CPR dolled up both 4-4-0's 29 and 144, and had them outside on the ready track on display. At Chipman the extra coach was taken off for its southbound run back to Norton. 4-4-0 at Chipman was replaced on the same train by 2-8-2 5206 with much more tonnage as a mixed train to South Devon, the north side of Fredericton being separated by the St. John River. Mostly D-10's took over the run west of Chipman, 900-1000-1100's. Omer Lavallee was in his glory on the trip-having conversations with the station agents northbound and southbound on the trip. Col. Anderson retired from the Royal Canadian Army a railway historian was on board our train who moved from Fredericton to Sussex, N.B. I have all this on film and converted to video in 1997-part of the video "The Last Years of Canadian Pacific Steam"-one hour taken from the Dominion Atlantic in Nova Scotia, CPR in New Brunswick-Norton-Chipman, Saint John area, Aroostook, N.B.-scene northbound to Edmundston(2-8-0 of 3300 series), McAdam(once a CPR railfans "Paradise", Montreal at Westmount, Montreal West, Cote St Luc., Toronto at John Street, Lambton freight roundhouse, Moose Jaw and Calgary, and all in color, plus clips of videos on CP done in 1997 and 1998, including "Royal Hudson" 2860 and ex CP 2-8-0 3716-two hours of action. I had the pleasure of visiting the South Simcoe operation in 1997 as part of
the CN/CP SIG convention in Oshawa. CP 136 powered our train, and I don't think I would have bothered to take the trip if it had been diesel powered. I had been on a fan trip behind 136 way back in 1959 when it was operated by CP on their Norton to Chipman, N.B. line. While I do model modern diesels, there is not much railway "romance" when they power a passenger train. The Salem & Hillsborough Railroad here in New Brunswick used to operate 136's sister #29 and other steam engines on their tourist train when government subsidies were plentiful. Since they have been on their own, diesel power has been the norm. It's just not the same! I made many trips to see the steamers in operation, but hardly ever bother to see their diesels. Others have told me the same. Many people who experienced steam operations in previous years want to show their families what a steam engine looked, sounded and smelled like. Diesels just do not have the interest to non-railfans. A diesel train is usually looked at as transportation rather than a unique experience that rekindles old memories. Bob Boudreau Saint John, N.
