Customer Bulletin UPDATE- StL&H; Toronto & Montreal

The following is intended to provide updated information on situation(s)
impacting traffic moving through, to and from the identified corridor. While it
provides an accurate overall account of the current situation, we caution that
some shippers may be experiencing service somewhat different from what is
described in this report.

SERVICE AREA REPORTS

St Lawrence & Hudson (StLH) Service Area, Montreal PQ- Chicago IL

UPDATE TORONTO YARD HUMP

On Sunday March 12, 2000 we resumed normal hump operations at our Toronto Yard,
completing the majority of improvements at this facility. For the past 4 weeks
we had not been able to hump dangerous commodities at Toronto yard. Our work,
conducted in concert with Transport Canada, allows for the safe handling of all
commodities over our Toronto Yard Hump and removes a large operational
constraint over the past 4 weeks. Work will continue to ensure we operate a
safe and efficient hump operations at Toronto.

Over the last few weeks you may have experienced delays to your shipments in
and around the Toronto area, however as a result of the resumption of all hump
operations, service should return to normal operations. (This does apply to
Intermodal traffic)

St Lawrence & Hudson (StLH) Service Area, Montreal PQ to Philadelphia,
Harrisburg & Washington

We are currently experiencing some congestion in our yard facilities in this
service area as a result of large traffic volumes, a couple of minor
derailments, which are cleared up, and service delays to and from connecting
carriers. This is mainly impacting our Manifest traffic moving through this
area resulting in delays of 24-48 hours on shipments. We expect this congestion
to be cleared by the end of this week with the resumption of normal operations
by the weekend.

We are also experiencing similar delays on some traffic moving through Montreal
St Luc yard as a result of problems in this corridor. It is very difficult to
predict the exact delays shipments may receive.

This does not apply to Intermodal traffic.

To All at C-P-R@onelist

At the begining of March, the Canadian Pacific "East-West Corridor" -Time
Table No.1, and the July 98' version of the General operating Instructions,
were superceded.
Apparently, there is discussion as to their disposal. Recycling has been
considered. I hate to see these end up in the garbage, and I hate to see
them turned into someones commercial venture. (You know my feelings about
free information..Heh)

I have a limited number of copies, for now, and if anyone would like one,
you are welcome to send me your postal address and I will send out as many as
I can get my hands on.

Please consider that I may either run out of copies, or funds for mailing
them, (I think they weigh about a pound and GOI weighs more) so I say
"limited number". Also consider that misuse of the information in them, would
hearten all of us, and probably curtail further free stuff. It's first come
first serve.

Following the convention set by Champ, Dulux is Imitation Gold which is the
colour used by CPR after 1935-36.

Very interesting news and I have one question regarding said decals per a
recent discussion on the color of lettering on CPR passenger cars in the
1950's:
Would Dulux Gold be Gold or Imitation Gold, or better put, would Dulux Gold
be the color of lettering used by the CPR prior to 1935 or after 1935?

Thanks,

Black Cat Publishing now has the decals for that CP passenger car that
you're painting. The following decal sets are now available:
CPR 2200 coach in Dulux Gold includes lettering for 6600 buffet-parlor cars.
CPR 4700 baggage/express/mail in Dulux gold or gold leaf. This set will do
any headend or combine car.
CPR Grove sleeper in Dulux gold.
CPR A class dining car in Dulux gold or gold leaf. Has the names for all A
class dining cars.
CPR N class sleeping car in Dulux gold or gold leaf. Has the names for all N
class sleeping cars.
CPR T class sleeping car in Dulux gold. Has the names for all T class
sleeping cars.
All of the above include lettering for the ends, trucks, and underside of
the cars as well as our usual extra car numbers and train numbers. Price $3
each plus $1 S&H per order. See our decals on an A class diner by John
Morris at the CRM booth at the Toronto Train Show to see what you've been
leaving off your models.

E&N Units

Seen a picture of the 3005...looks terrible.

The E&N 3004 is still original and is paired with the
CPRS 3009.
Too bad they had to ruin that unique paint scheme.

CPR advertisement sketches

Currently on eBay there are a couple of concept sketches for a CP
advertisement, ca 1962, wherein all the different aspects of CP are illustrated.
I have no connection whatsoever with the selling of these things. But simply
came across them and thought them sufficiently interesting that others here
might want to have a look.

They can be found at

That really doesn't look that bad?
Is there an original posting of the E&N somewhere though as it just does
not look like the same green that I recall, thought there was much more
of the green as I once recalled???

764 tonnage on Mtn Sub

Jim Johnston

Hi Bob:

Thanks for the clarification. Very interesting. I'd wondered if making a train Locotrol in Revelstoke was even feasible. It makes sense now that you've explained that the train was in Locotrol mode right out of Coquitlam.

Methinks you predicted correctly about the train running conventional south of Golden on the Windermere Sub. I see the trace page shows all four units arriving Golden but only one CP and the two UP's are shown arriving Cranbrook.

I wonder if anyone got pictures today on the Windermere Sub.?

Re: XE No 764

Bob Eley

Yes, Jim, this train is overtonnage for the Mountain Sub "only if
all the power is on the head end". Drawbar stress, on the Mountain's
grades, is such that tonnage is restricted to a maximum of 5000 tons and
764 usually has in the neighbourhood of 8600 tons.
To overcome this restriction, the train is robotized at Revelstoke
by putting two of the 4 units in the middle of the train. Essentially,
this is the same as running two 4300 ton trains. Another restriction
that this overcomes is the dynamic brake restrictions. Because of the
fantastic retarding force of the AC unit's dynamic brakes, we are
restricted to two operating dbs in any consist. For example, the train
has 4 operating units on the Shuswap sub, but 2 of the dbs in the consist
must be cut out. By placing the two units in the center of the train,
you have two separate consists and each one can have two operating dbs so
east of Revelstoke, the train operates with 4 dbs working.
This train comes out of Vancouver with only 2 units on the head end.
They are set up as master and slave, ie: locotrol operation is
activated. The only connection between the first and second unit is the
brake pipe. The second unit is operated just as if it is in the middle
of the train. Somewhere on the Shuswap sub, we pick up two units and
they must be placed between the two existing locomotives. This
simplifies the robotizing operation at Revelstoke. At the east end of
Revelstoke, the crew just divides the consist in two and places the
trailing two units in the middle of the train and the train is ready to
depart.
From what I understand, this train goes south at Golden and is
transferred to the UP at Kingsgate, southwest of Cranbrook. I would
assume that the slave units are removed from the train at Golden and the
train continues from there conventional, with two units on the head-end.
I heard that this train is quite profitable for the CP, so it
receives premium attention. It is expected to last for about a month, or
until the barge slip is repaired.

From: "Jim Johnston" <johnston@...>

Hi Folks:

Just back from trackside where I watched this No 764 go east with:

CP 9580 UP 6684 (AC4400) UP 8137 (SD9043MAC) CP 9535 and 71 cars of BCR
Lumber (both bulkhead flats and boxcars)

By Salmon Arm B.C. at 2152 PST

Heard a discussion on the scanner between this train's engineman and the
engineman of another one ( Bob Eley was that you?) re the heavy tonnage of
this 764 train. I didn't catch all the conversation but it appears the
train is over tonnage for the Mountain Sub east of Revelstoke. There
seemed to be some talk of either reducing tonnage in Revelstoke or running
the train in Locotrol configuration. The few times I've seen this train a
year or so ago it was running with remotes. 2 units on the point and 2
slaves. Looks like this one could be easily set up that way. Hmmm.

He should be into Revelstoke about 0030. Maybe into Golden about 0400.
Looks like a daylight trip south of Golden on the Windermere Sub. then
west to Yahk on the Nelson Sub. I'm tied up here at home tomorrow (darn
it!) but it might be a fun photo project for tomorrow. Anyone out there
interested?

Haven't seen much of the new AC's so when I saw one passing through
Streetsville today as I left for Guelph I decided to check it out
thinking I might beat it to Campbellville.

Well I got ahead of him by Trafalgar Road (Hornby) and here was 8521
struggling along all by itself with 85 cars! (that's counting 5 packs
and the like as 1 car/platform).

Most unusual to see a lone unit - even the Moonlight almost always has 2
units even though toting only a dozen or less cars.
I think this is standard on 500/501, with 1 of the 8500 series AC4400s.
Today 501 had 8553 solo.

This has been happening regularly lately on eastbound intermodal trains on
the Galt Sub...always with AC's. Either CP is being foolish or those beasts
are awfully reliable - but I guess they could always blame any delay on
NS/CSX and the customer probably wouldn't know the difference :)

Guys:

Seeing quite a few CP trains in the Prairies with only a single unit.

CP DON YARD

My message to Joe Toole on Mon Mar 6 was in error. Caught StLH 8223
and CP 8242 switching the Don Yard on Friday eve at 8 30 pm. Talked
to the brakeman and he says they switch every evening Mon to Fri
leaving Leaside at about 8 pm. Too dark now for a photo over the
Bayview bridge but come June with DST, a good photo will be possible.

Although this posting is not about a current CPR diesel it might be
interesting to the list. This is from the Railpace Magazine Hotnews... bob

FORMER CP C630m TO RETURN TO SERVICE: Former Canadian Pacific C630m 4500 is
now lettered and numbered as Arkansas & Missouri #70. The railroad was
planning to assign the big six axle MLW locomotive in transfer service at
Van Buren, Arkansas. However, plans are now to utilize the unit on the
nightly BNSF interchange train to Monett, Missouri. This is due to possible
problems with the large locomotive on bridges and curves in Van Buren. (Rich
Wallace - posted 3/12)
