Re: CP 3084 in maroon and grey
Richard Dilley
What a great picture. Anxiously awaiting several more hopefully from a few
feet further back. Thanks to Dan Ellis for the first photo of the unit (and Brian D. Switzer for posting it). Will now have to run out and buy an HO GP38-2 and paint it maroon and grey since there is a prototype. I don't think an SD40-2 so painted would have been a good idea as possibly such a large 6 axle unit would restrict where the train could run. I realize that passenger cars are long but suspect they could operate on a sharper curve than an SD40-2. Extended Range DB/UP DAsh 8s/3084
Ross Harrison
I believe a number of Soo SD40-2s have been retrofitted with extended
range DB. They can be identified with a more pronounced hump/box structure just ahead of the grids. The 5402-5414 I believe also have this feature (identified by a square box) just ahead of the db grids. Also the 5402-5414 (ex QNS&Ls) have 4000 imp. gallon tanks. This, along with their extended range DB is why they were commonly used for motive power tests on the M&O Sub in the 1980's and 1990s (essentially a heavier unit when fully fuelled and provided more restistance for adheasion testing with thier extended range DB). CP/Soo 6406-6410 have 5000 gallon tanks since they were former ICG SD40A's. The ex NS SD40-2s bought from GATX also have extended range DB. I believe the 9000s have it too, but not sure (they were built well into the SD50 production period that feature would have been standard by then). UP Dash 8s are all off test and going home...testing was cancelled because of poor condition of these units...10-12 years of hard service on the UP. 3084...the straight 40's are slowly dieing. And as Doug Cummings pointed out, why blow 3000 hp when 2000 will do? (Some things in corporate culture never die). Not to mention, a 4-axle unit is much more versatile than a big 6-axle one when one considers the service for which it is intended. As for liveries...the 5" stripes and large multi-mark was always neat (but going to 8" stripes only on the nose and the small MM really lessened the impact), that said the M&G and script is the classiest. 5767 (scud) and 5911 (leader) still have the large multi-mark. 5863 is the third, but it might have been re-painted. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't these units get delivered in theaction red paint scheme? Why not pick a unit on the roster that actually worethe tuscan and grey paint scheme such as the original order of SD-40 (not dashEvery with these wishes forgets why they painted the 3084 this way in the first place. When you think about it, a GP38 is the most logical choice, even if they never wore grey and maroon before. This is to be a backup unit for the F's. SD40's work the mainline, when they needed the backup unit, it could be in Montreal. With the 3084 they can keep it around Calgary working locals and branches so it is available on short notice. |

I've always been a fan of the multi-mark, but the maroon and grey sure looks sharp. I'm wondering if maybe this is a change of things to come. SD40-2's since the late 1970's, and none of them have extended range DB. The CPR Dash 2's do have the same DB blister as extended range, however the louvers for cooling the grids to not extend as far forward on the blister as on extended range DB units. This was a factory option, and a visual way of identifying non extended range DB equipped SD40-2's. Last night I saw a CP coal train with only 2 ACs' headed for Roberts Bank in Langley. The train had one midtrain and one robot with aluminum Procor hoppers. This is the first time I've seen a coal train with only two units. Is this a result of the directional running down from Kamloops? Chris Yes, this is the result of directional running. Re: CP extended range dynamic and fuel tanks
Bob Eley
I have been running SD40's for CP since the late 70's and I have never
found one of them with extended range dynamic brake. Our peak dynamic brake is about 19 mph and below 13 mph, it drops off drastically and has to be augmented by using the independent brake. This is quite different to the AC power we now use where the db efficiency continues right down to basically 0 mph. You can stop a train using db now. From: Mike Pulaski <MPulaski@...> Bob Eley ? Re: Contest
Paul,
The Contest sounds very interesting. Could you explain the judging a little more? I don't understand if the photos can be from locations system wide or just Div 295, and how they pertain to the months? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Well, they should be relevant to the division. This is because it will be a division calendar. And instead of a pic of a recognisable piece of equipment, they should be a recognisable location within the division. An engineer or conductor will be able to look at it and say ...oh yeah that's where I work. Good pic. The judging? heh.. once we start to publish the entries, the judging may take on a more widespread opinion than just a bunch of guys at a union meeting, I don't know, lets just let it roll, and see if we can make the best calendar, for the best division on the Canadian Pacific Rail Eh? I should mention that the finished calendar will be a vinyl matt finish as kinkos or the copy centre does them. Paul |
