This was a predecessor of Chicago and North Western. He'll also show us recently built or reconstructed Metra stations throughout the Chicago area. This will be an in-person slide presentation. October 19, 1878 The Detroit & Milwaukee is reorganized as the Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee. [later GTW] October 19, 1893 A Grand Trunk passenger train wrecks at Battle Creek MI, killing 26. October 20, 1881 Construction of the Pontiac, Oxford & Port Austin Railroad (later GTW) begins in Caseville, bringing rail service to Michigan's "Thumb" area. October 20, 1920 The Association of American Railroads issues standards for stenciling reporting marks on the sides of freight cars. October 20, 1978 Vicksburg MI loses its agent, the last person working in the passenger depot. October 15, 1949 The Gulf, Mobile & Ohio retires its last steam locomotive, 2-8-2 #404, becoming the first major U.S. railroad to dieselize. The event is covered in a "Life" magazine feature. His test subject was a special Grand Trunk passenger train running between Toronto and Montreal. October 1, 1905 The Grand Trunk Railway assumes control of the Canada Atlantic Railway. October 1, 1937 This month’s issue of “Railroad Magazine” carries an item on the Canadian National station at Callander, ON. The station, originally just a passenger coach, has been replaced by a larger, permanent structure due to the extra rail traffic generated by the Dionne Quintuplets. September 27, 1856 The Illinois Central Railroad is completed between Galena and Cairo with a "branch" from Centralia to Chicago at a cost of over $25 million [2024: $926 million]. At 705 miles it is the longest railroad line in the world. (Some sources say September 21) September 29, 1849 The Vermont Central Railway opens between Middlesex and Waterbury. September 29, 1930 The conversion of track on Prince Edward Island from 3 feet six inch gauge to standard gauge is completed. September 26, 1942 Due to the war, U.S. passenger service levels are frozen in place as of October 4. No new trains or sections are allowed. Seasonal and excursion trains are forbidden. September 26, 2007 Canadian National Railway Company and United States Steel announce that CN will attempt to acquire a major portion of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern. This will link CN's Wisconsin Central, Illinois Central and Grand Trunk Western properties in the Chicago area. September 25, 1905 The Durand (MI) Union Depot is re-opened after a disastrous fire the previous April. September 25, 1937 Canadian National begins work on a new line between Rouvyn and Senneterre QC, 100 miles (160 km). The line will serve gold and copper mines. September 25, 2003 Canadian National sells most of Turcot Yard in Montreal to the Quebec Department of Transportation. September 25, 2018 The Department of Transportation removes the Obama-era rule requiring ECP electric brakes from trains carrying hazardous materials. disagreeing with independent studies showing a financial benefit to adopting the braking system. September 24, 1897 A new double-track steel arch bridge, Grand Trunk’s "Whirlpool Rapids" is opened at Niagara Falls. The new bridge carries a road on its lower deck. The former bridge is closed and demolished. September 24, 1955 Canadian National discontinues passenger train service on the Detroit River carferries. After this date connecting passengers are bused through the tunnel. September 24, 1958 The Atlantic & St. Lawrence Railroad, Buffalo & Lake Huron Railway, Champlain & St. Lawrence Railroad, St. Clair Tunnel Company, United States & Canada Railroad and the Vermont & Province Line Railroad are all merged into Canadian National Railways. September 20, 1850 The first Federal Land Grant is approved, for the Illinois Central. September 21, 1856 The Illinois Central connects Chicago with Cairo IL, making it the longest railway line in the United States. September 21 1906 A Grand Trunk Railway passenger train hits a freight at a crossing in Napanee ON. The engineer of the passenger train stayed at the controls of the locomotive trying to stop the train, becoming the only fatality. A monument is erected in his honor. September 22, 1883 The Grand Trunk Railway fully acquires the Midland Railway of Canada. September 22, 1928 Canadian Premier John Bracken drives the last spike on the Canadian National’s line between Flin Flon and Cranberry Portage MB. Mark Tomlonson

September 18, 1893 The Ottawa, Amprior & Parry Sound Railway (later GT) opens between Ottawa and Amprior ON. September 18, 1958 ICC examiner Howard Hosmer presents his findings on United States passenger service. His report states that if the current rate of decline continues, first-class passenger service will end by 1965 and coach service by 1970. The report makes no formal recommendations, but will have a great influence on transportation planners. September 18, 1991 The last train pulls out of Mahone Bay NS behind 6 CN locomotives.
