December 3 in CNR History
December 3, 1853 Illinois Central and Michigan Central railroads begin using a temporary station built on fill on the lakefront of Chicago between Randolph and Water Streets. The track has been extended north from 12th Street. December 3, 1919 The Quebec Bridge opens to pedestrian, rail and automobile traffic. Planning for the bridge began in 1899, and it has collapsed twice during construction, killing 89 workers. It is currently owned by Canadian National. December 3, 1920 Canadian National launches its new trans-continental ¡°Continental Limited¡± passenger train. The train features electrically lit, all-steel cars, and will include open-air observation cars between Jasper and Kamloops in the summer months. December 3, 1979 The ICC grants permission to Grand Trunk Western to buy the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton, confirming a court order handed down in July. The ICC gives GTW six months to compete the sale. December 3, 1980 The last continuous, daily, non-fireless steam operation in the United States comes to a close as Chicago's Northwestern Steel & Wire drops the fires of its ex-Grand Trunk Western 0-8-0 switchers for the last time. December 2, 1934 Illinois Central's premier "Panama Limited" is re-instated after a two and a half year suspension due to the Depression. December 2, 1939 A Grand Trunk Western crewman riding on the footboards of a tender is killed as his engine backs across US-12 in Kalamazoo, striking a semi-truck that had tried to beat the train to the crossing. November 30, 1871 The Toronto, Simcoe & Muskoka Junction Railway opens from Barrie to Orillia ON. CNR will abandon the line in September 1996. December 1, 1824 The Montreal ¡°Gazette¡± prints an editorial calling for the construction of a railway to link Lake Champlain with the St. Lawrence River. This line was eventually built, the Champlain & St. Lawrence (later M&NY, GTR, CN) December 1, 1901 The Chicago Kalamazoo & Saginaw completes its Pavilion Branch running southeast from Kalamazoo, connecting with the Grand Trunk at Pavilion. GT (et seq.) will lease this branch for access to Kalamazoo. December 1, 2007 Norfolk Southern terminates its Joint Section agreement with Canadian National, initiated between the Wabash and the Grand Trunk in 1898, ending 109 years of operation into Ontario. However, NS and CN cannot come to agreement to handle Fort Erie interchange traffic, and service is allowed to continue under a new temporary agreement. Mark Tomlonson

November 22, 1858 The Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad (later GT) opens a new depot across the river from Grand Haven MI. Serving only freight at first; passenger service to the new depot will begin on January 1. November 23, 1897 Former slave Andrew J. Beard patents improvements on the ¡°Janney¡± automatic railroad coupler of 1873. Beard¡¯s improvements allow cars to couple and uncouple with no need for trainmen to stand between the cars. November 23, 1990 The last rail is removed from Newfoundland Island. Revenue service had quit about two years earlier. November 23, 2004 The Wisconsin Northern Railroad begins operations, using tracks formerly operated by Chicago & North Western/Union Pacific and Canadian National/Wisconsin Central. November 24, 1905 The Canadian Northern Railway completes its line to Edmonton Alberta. Alberta¡¯s Lieutenant Governor drives the last spike. November 24, 1964 The Canadian National Railway opens the Great Slave Lake Railway, connecting Pine Point in the Northwest Territories with Roma Junction in Alberta. November 24, 1995 The last Canadian National transcontinental freight train runs through Algonquin Park. November 21, 1859 First Detroit-Fort Gratiot (Port Huron) train on the Chicago, Detroit & Canada Grand Trunk Junction Railroad (later GT, GTW). Thomas Edison will later work on this line as a candy butcher. November 21, 1950 A westbound troop train and Canadian National¡¯s ¡°Continental Limited¡± crash head-on near Valemount BC. November 19, 1847 The second rail line in Canada, the 12 km Montreal & Lachine Railway (later M&NY, M&C, GT), opens. November 19, 1906 Passenger service begins on the Canadian Northern between Toronto and Parry Sound. This is the first 140 miles (225 km) of Canadian National's eventual main line to western Canada. November 19, 1990 The Grand Trunk car ferry "City of Milwaukee" makes its last trip. She has been preserved at Manistee MI. November 15, 1866 The Blue Line, a second cooperative fast freight line, is organized at Albany. (The Red Line had been organized in the spring, running over the NYC and Wabash) The line will operate over the New York Central, the Great Western of Canada and the Michigan Central to Chicago as soon as Great Western lays a third rail for standard-gauge cars. It will run west of Chicago on the Illinois Central, Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Chicago & North Western and the Chicago & Alton. The line will own 7,000 cars. November 15, 1916 For the first time the Dow Jones Industrial average exceeds the Dow Jones Railroad average. November 15, 1962 Congress repeals a 10% tax on railroad tickets created during World War II to discourage travel. Railroads are given permission to raise fares to match the previous prices. November 15, 2001 Two Canadian National Railway trains collide head-on before dawn at a passing track near Andersonville MI. Two crewmen were killed, two hospitalized. November 16, 1898 The Vermont Central Railroad is purchased by the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada and renamed the Vermont Central Railway. November 17, 1855 The first section of the Grand Trunk Railway opens, 125.4 miles (201.8 km) between Montreal (Point St. Charles) and Brockville. November 17, 2020 Canadian National officially puts its five ¡°Heritage¡± diesels into service. Painted for Grand Trunk, Illinois Central, Wisconsin Central, Elgin, Joliet & Eastern and BC Rail, the units had been spotted in service for the past month. November 17, 2021 Canadian National and Canadian Pacific release a joint statement that the recent washouts of their joint line in British Columbia¡¯s Frasier and Thompson Canyons will require major repairs. November 12, 1907 Formal dedication and opening ceremonies are held for the electrification of Grand Trunk's St. Clair Tunnel. The first tests were made the previous February, and full electric operation will begin in May. November 12, 2021 Trains magazine reports that CN has announced its goal to have net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. CN is the first railroad in North America to make that commitment. Mark Tomlonson

November 8, 2004 Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, and Norfolk Southern announce an operating agreement designed to decrease shipping times between eastern Canada and the eastern United States. November 9, 1878 The Detroit & Milwaukee Railway is reorganized as the Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee (later GT). November 9, 1953 Canadian National opens its 144-mile branch to the mines at Lynn Lake to Sherridon MB. November 10, 1853 The Great Western Railway Line (later CN) opens, running 69 kilometers from the Niagara Suspension Bridge to Hamilton ON. November 4, 1925 Canadian National Railcar 15820 finishes a transcontinental trip it started three days earlier, averaging 44 mph and topping out at 60 mph November 4, 2021 CN announces it will be purchasing a Wabtec battery-electric locomotive. The unit, purchased with financial support from Pennsylvania¡¯s Department of Environmental Protection, was used as a demonstrator on BNSF earlier in the year. Mark Tomlonson

November 1, 1928 The Grand Trunk Western consolidates 10 subsidiary lines operating in Michigan, Illinois and Indiana to form a single system. November 1, 1957 U.S. Class I Railroads report they roster 27,108 diesel and 2,697 steam locomotives. An additional 721 steam locomotives are in storage. November 1, 1967 Canadian National receives five sets of Turbotrains for testing. November 1, 1978 The Grand Trunk ends carferry service on the great lakes. November 3, 2008 CN announces it is buying some of the rail and ferry operations of Quebec Railway Corporation. Included in the buy: Chemin de fer de la Matapedia et du Golfe, New Brunswick East Coast Railway, Ottawa Central Railway and the rail ferry firm Compagnie de gestiion de Matane Inc. Mark Tomlonson

October 31, 1843 The Vermont Central is re-created to build a line across the center of Vermont. October 31, 1957 The Canadian National Railway receives permission to operate the former New York Central Lines in the vicinity of Ottawa ON. Some of the lines will be re-laid. October 31, 1965 ¡°Rapido¡± passenger service begins on the Canadian National. October 31, 1976 Canadian National and Canadian Pacific issue the first joint VIA Rail timetable. October 31, 1982 The United Aircraft Turbo Trains [Amtrak, CN, VIA] are removed from service by VIA. They will go next to Naporano Iron & Metal in New Jersey where they will be scrapped. October 30, 1972 In the worst railway accident in Chicago history, two commuter trains collide in early morning dense fog, killing 45 and injuring 332. The engineer of an Illinois Central Gulf train overshot the 27th Street Station. As he backed to the station, the rear of the train was not properly flagged. The train had cleared an automatic block signal, and was struck by an express commuter train. After this accident all Chicago commuter trains are painted with bright stripes at the ends of the trains. Mark Tomlonson

October 28, 1931 The Pennsylvania and Grand Trunk railroads agree to share their Milwaukee and Muskegon terminals. This is to serve the Great Lakes carferries run by the Grand Trunk-Pennsylvania Transportation Company formed today. Actual operation of the carferries is delayed due to the Depression. October 28, 1959 The Canadian National line between St. Felicien and Chibougamau QC opens. October 28, 1962 The Grand Trunk reduces the time for its Chicago-Montreal "International" by one hour and 45 minutes. Chicago-Detroit time is cut by 45 minutes. Mark Tomlonson
