May 17, 1908 The last steam engine passes through the St. Clair Tunnel as operations become fully electric. May 17, 1936 Illinois Central's streamliner "Green Diamond" makes its debut. May 17, 1945 The Federal Communications Commission allocates radio channels for exclusive railroad use. May 17, 1946 President Truman seizes control of the railroads in the hopes of preventing a nationwide strike. The action delays, but does not prevent the strike May 17, 1957 Canadian National Railways opens a 40-mile diversion of its Cornwall Subdivision due to the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. This subdivision will later be merged with the Gananoque and Oshawa Subdivisions to form the Kingston Subdivision. May 17, 1965 Canadian National Railways opens "Toronto Yard", later known as "MacMillan Yard". May 18, 1979 The State of Michigan purchases the Grand Trunk Western car ferry "City of Milwaukee". May 16, 1853 The first railroad to operate in Ontario, the Ontario. Simcoe & Huron Railway (later OS&H, Northern, GT, CN) runs a passenger train from Toronto north to Mitchell’s Corners (later known as Aurora), a distance of roughly 50 km (31 miles). Much of the line is still in use. May 16, 2005 The last Canadian National revenue train pulls off the Kinghorn Sub at Current Junction. Mark Tomlonson

May 15, 1915 The Interstate Commerce Commission orders the Pennsylvania, Northern Central, Lehigh Valley, New York Central, Rutland, Erie, Grand Trunk and Lackawanna railroads to divest themselves of their Great Lakes steamship lines by December 1. The Great Lakes car ferrries are not affected. May 15, 1923 Due to operational problems in the United States, the American lines of the former Grand Trunk Railway of Canada in New England are reorganized as the "Grand Trunk". Mark Tomlonson

A while ago, GIO stopped service on the NS&T spur that runs out of Merritton. I think there was one customer left on the spur, Kemira Chemicals. Did CN start serving this customer? If so, where did the power come from to do the service? Thanks Doug Renshaw Burlington, ON.

May 13, 1954 President Eisenhower signs the St. Lawrence Seaway Bill providing for joint U.S. - Canadian construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The bill is bitterly opposed by the railroads, who see it as a threat to their freight business. May 13, 1971 The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers agrees to end the "Divisional Rule", which defined 100 miles as 1 day's work. Many engineers were being paid a full day's wage for 150 minutes of train operation. Mark Tomlonson

May 2, 1917 The Drayton-Ackworth Report recommends the Canadian Government take over the operations of the Grand Trunk, Grand Trunk Pacific and Canadian Northern Railways and operate them as one system with the Intercolonial and National Transcontinental Railways. The report is accepted. May 2, 2002 An eastbound Canadian National train collides with a semi trailer near Firmdale, MB. The resulting spill of plastic pellets, benzene, glycol, and hexane catches fire and forces the evacuation of nearly 200 local residents. Mark Tomlonson

May 1, 1942 The last pre-war streamliner, Illinois Central's refurbished "Panama Limited" is put into service. May 1, 1952 This month, for the first time the number of diesel-electric locomotives on U.S. railroads exceeds the number of steamers, 19,082 to 18,489. May 1, 1954 New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal is dedicated. May 1, 1960 In its current issue, Trains magazine correctly predicts that the ultimate shape of a diesel locomotive will be a streamline-type cab (i.e. full width) with a narrow hood following. April 30, 1900 In Vaughan, MS Illinois Central engineer John Luther "Casey" Jones becomes a hero and a legend. Jones stays with his train, the "Cannonball Express" when the track ahead is blocked by a freight train. Jones slows his train down enough to save his passengers, but not himself. April 30, 1959 Grand Trunk passenger Train 21 makes its final run between Durand and Muskegon MI. April 30, 1971 Railroad-operated intercity passenger service ends on most U.S. railroads; Rock Island, Rio Grande, Southern and Georgia Railroads being notable exceptions.
