February 28, 1908 First test run through Grand Trunk's St. Clair tunnel using electric locomotives. February 28, 1920 The Transportation Act is passed, allowing the ICC to set intrastate rates in the U.S. in some cases and forming the Railway Labor Board. It also sets a date for the end of USRA control. February 28, 1931 The Detroit, Toledo & Ironton is sold to Pennroad Corporation (PRR subsidiary) and the Wabash Railroad. February 28, 1947 The Illinois Central withdraws the “Green Diamond” trainset from service between Chicago and St. Louis. February 16, 1865 The Cairo & St. Louis Railroad (later M&O, GM&O, IC, CN) is chartered. February 17, 1872 The President of the Peninsular Railway (later GTW, CNR) writes to the Pennsylvania Company noting that his road is laid from Lansing MI to a point 12 miles west of South Bend. He proposes joining the Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne & Chicago (later PRR) at Valparaiso for a route to Chicago in exchange for Bonds and a favorable freight rate. His proposal will be declined. February 17, 1911 In the United States, the Locomotive and Boiler Inspection Act sets regular and mandatory boiler inspections, to be performed by the ICC. Mark Tomlonson

February 15, 1926 Canadian National begins service between Kamloops and Kewlowna BC. February 15, 1997 The former Detroit, Toledo & Ironton lines making up Grand Trunk's Flatrock Subdivision south of Diann become part of the Indiana & Ohio Railway. February 14, 1867 The first car of flour shipped using the new Blue Line, a cooperative traffic agreement among several railroads, arrives in Boston from St. Louis via the New York Central, Great Western of Canada, Michigan Central and Chicago & North Western. The line also operates over the Illinois Central, St. Louis, Alton & Chicago, Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Hudson River Railroad, Boston & Albany, Housatonic, Worcester & Nashua, and Providence & Worcester railroads. The May/June 2023 Branchline states the Dash8-40C's 2100-2134 were being retired. The past Sunday, the 11th, I thought I heard mention of 2131 working in Stuart Yard, Hamilton. Also on Sunday the Virtual Railfan camera at Waupaca, WI. picked up 2107 going by. Am I confused or did some of the above mentioned units get refurbished. Doug Renshaw Burlington, ON.

February 13, 1855 The Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad (later GTW) is formed by the merger of the Detroit & Pontiac and Oakland & Ottawa Railroad. We'll see freight on the North Shore in the final days of the railroad. Bill will present a bit of history about the Rondout Train Robbery of 1924. We'll see 100 mph trains through Rondout, tower operations, Amtrak over the years, and current day preservation efforts. February 8, 1855 The first passenger train leaves Halifax NS. February 8, 1918 The USRA announces that it will standardize rolling stock for all new equipment orders. February 8, 1986 A Canadian National freight runs a red signal in Dalehurst AB, possibly because the crew was asleep, and crashes head-on into VIA's train No. 4. Twenty-three people are killed; 71 are injured. Most of the first responders come from Hinton, just over 11 miles (18 kilometers) away. Mark Tomlonson

Today, Sunday Feb. 4th, at Burlington West, Mlge 32.3 Oakville Sub. 422 power was CN SD70M-2 8832; CN ES44DC 2342; CN ES44AC 2845; CN AC44C6M 3316 and I think Richmond #9. Richmond #9 was passed us before could get a good look. Anyone have any idea what the model was and maybe where it is going. Thanks Doug Renshaw Burlington, ON.

February 2, 1927 Canadian National opens Spadina Yard in Toronto. It is built on a former Grand Trunk yard that dates back to the 1850's. Construction on the yard will continue for at least two more years. February 3, 1862 Thomas Edison becomes the first newspaper publisher to distribute his paper on a train. He sells his one-page Weekly Herald on a Grand Trunk train between Port Huron and Detroit. February 3, 1930 The Detroit, Toledo & Ironton ends freight service between Tecumseh and Dundee MI. Passenger service to Dundee was dropped last month. February 3, 1958 Railway Age Magazine reports 1,377 active steamers on U.S. rails and 1,709 in Canada. Mikados (2-8-2) are the most common type still steaming. The editors add, "The future of steam is in a museum." February 3, 1995 Canadian National sells the former Central Vermont line from New London CT to East Alborg VT to RailTex. RailTex will operate the line as the New England Central Railroad. February 4, 1887 The Interstate Commerce Act is signed into law, setting up a commission to regulate rates on the railroads and ensure that the interests of farmers and small businessmen are represented. Thomas Cooley of Michigan is the commission's first Chairman. February 4, 1911 In honor of the work being done on the canal, Illinois Central names its premier passenger train the "Panama Limited". January 31, 1957 Last passenger service on the Illinois Central to Paducah KY. January 31, 2009 Canadian National takes control of most of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern. January 26, 1967 A major blizzard in the Great Lakes states shuts down many railroads. January 26, 1978 Over 2 feet of snow falls on the Midwest. High winds with the snow snarl all forms of transportation, including rail. Several railroads use wedge plows and snow blowers to clear the rails after the blizzard passes.
