July 31, 1966 Canadian National Railways opens a new Union Station in Ottawa. The previous facility is closed.

July 31, 2001 Grand Trunk Western 4-8-4 6325 returns to steam on the Ohio Central. The engine had been donated to the City of Battle Creek (MI) but when earlier attempts to restore it fell short, it had sat disassembled on the edge of GTW's Nichols Yard before it was purchased by OC.

July 15, 1913 The Newlands Act is passed, creating the U.S. Board of Mediation and Conciliation to mediate disputes between railroads and their labor unions.

July 15, 1986 Locomotives owned by VIA Rail Canada Inc. are required by the Canada Transport Commission to be equipped with ditch lights. They are the first equipment on the North American continent to have such a requirement, although Canadian railroads have been using ditch lights since the 1920's, especially in areas prone to falling rocks.
