We are talking about two different wars. In WWII there was no attempt to re-form something like the USRA that had run the railroads during WWI, but there was a strong feeling that transportation needed to be coordinated on a national basis. That task was given to the War Department. It's a bit of a coincidence that the railroad takeovers for two wars 25 years apart happened on nearly the same date. I included this US information on the CNR list because the order applied to CN properties in the U.S. Mark Tomlonson Life isn’t just about surviving the storm; it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

I think that you meant December 27, 1917, not 1943 ?. It was actually ordered by President Wilson on December 26th, effective December 28th.

The creation is meant to unite and rescue five bankrupt railroads: the Grand Trunk, Grand Trunk Pacific, Canadian Northern, Intercolonial and Canadian Government Railways. December 16, 1910 In Kinmundy IL, a standing Illinois Central freight is struck by another train that could not slow on a grade due to icy track.
