Powering a Bridgeport in the UK
35
Morning, Iam looking at running a BP series 1 2 HP - the vario speed box not the earlier belt models, on an inverter. Who has done it outside of the States on what and how? The UK because it's a Adcock and Shipley electrical setup excluding the motor. How because there's a 2 speed rotary switch before the motor and inverters, iam told, don't like that. Inverter - only because I have 230 volt supply. My home work shop runs on a rotary converter which I am very happy with but would cost ?2k+ to replace and another?1k to supply. Finally I have both standard X & Y motors, wiring a separate inverter would seem the way to go but with 2 very small motors how and again what?

Pop rivets for badge attachement
13
Hi all, please could I lean on the Hive Mind? I need to reattach a badge on my British Textron Series 1, J head machine. It was done with pop rivets and I wonder if anyone has a specification for these? Not of the suppliers seem to list them, only the drive type rivets so I guess they are a common item and I also suspect I may be overthinking this but if anyone has any help they can offer I would be grateful. Many thanks James

[Bridgeport Mill] Powering a Bridgeport in the UK
2
Hi Peter, I live in Surrey UK. I have a Bridgeport series I with a 2HP motor. I purchased from Direct Drives a Speecom 7200MA plug and play inverter. I made no changes to the wiring inside the Bridgeport box and have been using the mill like that for the past 5 years. Have a word with Direct Drives, they are very knowledgeable and helpful. Hope this helps. Regards John Baldwin

Recieved My Bridgeport Today
18
Hi All, Recieved my new to me Bridgeport today, very happy with S&R Machines in Connecticut for a fine job on all the upgrades. They shipped it with the head turned down 90 degrees which makes sense. Just wanted to do a sanity check on the procedure for rotating it back up. I see the four bolts that need to be loosened and they warn that when the head is up, be careful to prevent it from free falling down. Do I use the tilt adjustment screw to crank it back up the full 180 degrees or can I use the hoist to lift it up? Thanks, Mike in Michigan

Using a servo motor as a power feed
7
Is there anyone using a servo motor as a powerfeed motor? I came across this online and thought it would be quite innovative and the system could be used on multiple types of machines Milling Machine Servo Motor Auto-Feed Power Feed Does anyone know of a controller for a servo motor to enable it to be used as a power feed motor? Thanks

CNC and Phase converter
18
I have a CNC machine with 2hp, 3 Phase 220v motor. I am using a 220v 1 to 3 phase converter. Some times when I turn motor on it will cause the cnc control to go into fault and lose position. I assume its some type of voltage or amp spike but don't know how to check. The motor gets power from the main panel [220v welder line] while the 110v cnc control is powered through remote 220v service panel that supplies the garage.

Bridgeport correct colour for 1985 machine
7
Hi All, Can anyone help? I am the proud new owner of a J head Textron era, British built Bridgeport Series 1 and I am doing a bit of refurb on the head. It's a 1985 machine, does anyone know the correct colour I should be using? I did buy a can of the Adcock & Shipley cement gray and to be honest i really don't like it and would prefer a more traditional machine gray. The machine was repainted at some point, I think by a toddler with a toilet brush, and so I don't have anything to guess from, the layers underneath are not really obvious or helpful. If there is not consensus I'll paint it a Colchester gray to match my Master but the correct one would be nice. Many thanks in advance, James

Bridgeport Mill Motor Voltages
6
I am in the process of buying a used 2J2 mill with a 2 hp motor. I am presently waiting for a snapshot of the motor nameplate from the dealer but I am getting curious/nervous while I wait. An electrician told me today that he has run into machinery motors that are only wound for 460 V 3 Ph and I planned on running it with 230v 1 Ph and a VFD. Can anyone tell me if the Bridgeports are typically capable of being connected to 230 or 460 3 Ph as I have seen on most industrial motors. Thanks, Mike

DRO
4
Hi all, I am looking for some guidance regarding DRO's for a Series 1 BP with 2J head. For 3 axis DRO's what are the pros and cons of the third axis being on the the Z-axis (knee) or on the W-axis (quill)? Art

Quill Stuck
6
Hello, I have a Bridgeport Series 1 mill which I purchased new in 1974 (#172.064). I later swapped the head for a 2J (#39231). It has been inactive and in climate controlled storage for the past 20 years. I am retired now and am re-activating this hobby machine. LPS rust preventative was effective but challenging to remove. All appears to be functioning as intended with the exception of the quill. The quill is stuck in the up position. It is possible that the previous quill lubricant has dried out causing the problem. About ?¡± of quill is exposed and lubricant had turned to a varnish like coating which I removed by applying solvent. I took out the quill clockspring to expose the pinion but that was not enough. How should I proceed to resolve this? Will removal of the motor and head expose the quill and rack and pinion such that some loosening solvent can be applied? Any experience will be appreciated. Many thanks, Art

New Bridgeport Owner
15
Hi All, I had the fortunate opportunity to be able to use the company machine shop equipment before retiring but now I really miss it. I just purchased a used Bridgeport mill from a company that buys and sells equipment in Connecticut and am not completely sure which model I have coming. Can you help me identify it and maybe comment on its visible condition. I think it is a 2J based on the Vari-Speed I can see. I can't tell if the tag on front says ¡°Series 1¡± or ¡°Series 2¡±. I am told it is 2 hp. It includes a new VFD, a new DRO, R8 collets, vise, hold downs, power feed and misc cutters. Paid $4500 plus $500 to ship to Michigan.

Lagun Mill
3
I'm the second owner of a lightly used Lagun FT-1 mill. I am continuing the original owner's business of making scale models so the mill is used on the average about an hour a week mostly cutting brass. This question may be appropriate for this group because I have heard that the head/spindle are compatible with the Bridgeport. I'm noticing a rattling sound when the spindle is down and locked. The noise doesn't occur if the spindle is down and not locked and when the spindle is up. The bottoms and sides of cuts are smooth to the eye if that indicates anything. Is this something to live with until it worsens or should it be fixed now? Lastly, the previous owner lubricated the spindle (two small reservoirs at the top) with 30 weight motor oil which I've continued. I bought some spindle oil but am nervous that changing the lubricant after all this time might not be a good idea. Please advise.

BP elevating shaft pinion gear not going in far enough
2
This shouldn't be so hard to figure out. Pulled everything apart only replaced the 2 bearings, replaced with the exact same gears. When I install the shaft assembly and tighten up part #88 (dial holder) it snugs up the bearing to the shoulder in the elevating shaft and pulls the whole assembly out away from the elevating screw gear. Before I start screwing around with spacers I'm hoping for some insight from the experts. I measured how far out it is from being engaged with a bit of backlash and it's about .250. I had a new set of gears so I replaced them but no difference.

OT, using machines for alternate purposes
When you need to transfer wire from that 20kg spool you got a great deal on over to something that actually fits in your welder...

Dial indicator crystals (new rabbit hole for me!)
3
Hello all, First off, I apologize for any cross posts. Lately, I¡¯ve been fixing a few ¡°parts only¡± dial and dial test indicators that I picked up on eBay. I¡¯m thinking about getting some 1/25¡± clear acrylic sheet and making some nice new dial crystals. Anyone ever worked with acrylic sheet? Is this something I¡¯d knock out with a punch and die setup? I did see one guy on YouTube make his dial crystal on a lathe. Clamped the acrylic sheet between two silicone rubber pads and turned the O.D. The Mitutoyo crystals have a beveled edge, so maybe the lathe is the way to go. Thoughts and comments from the the collective group brain power please! Thanks, George H. Meinschein, P.E. M Head quill dro
8
I have a M head on my Hardinge TM mill. I would like to put a quill DRO on the M Head and use the fine feed hand wheel. If you have done this, could you please share your design (pictures, etc.) or provide a link for a kit?

Quill Scale on J-head Was: [BridgeportMill] M Head quill dro
I made my own brackets to fit a scale on my J-head. My brackets move the scale off to the right. I still have access to the nuts to tram the head, to use the fine feed hand wheel and to be able to use the quick stop nut. The only way I was able to package a scale that satisfied all three requirements was to use a small form factor magnetic scale. I started off trying to sketch my needed brackets - gave up rapidly. I used very small scraps of wood, a band saw and a hot melt glue gun - took a couple of hours to develop both bracket patterns. Image attached (I hope) of the scale on my head. NOTE: I bought the 1u (micron resolution) scales - they were very finicky to get the magnetic gap so that the head would read consistently. For my lathe I used the 5u scales and they have been rock solid. I bought the Ditron / Reeson D80 DRO and scales. Only for me to realize that I -DO- use the STOP that's there. And have a QUICK CLAMP for the one time use jobs. The DRO bolts into that area , eliminating the screw and it's threaded stops. So I have never installed it , it's a Mitutoyo unit. I don't have an immediate recollection on what the M head uses there.
