Microphone query

Can I just plug a general microphone with a mono 3.5 plug (and no switch) into the mic socket and use the on screen transmit/receive buttons or does it have to be configured with a ppt switch.

Zbitx Musings
5
Hi, Taken the covers off my Zbitx, and just trying to work my way around the PCB. In the circuits available which are possibly out of date, it shows LC matching on either side of the 40 MHz crystal filter. Looking at the board it appears to have one L matching inductor T30-6 with 13t (one is a wire link, but the 22pF capacitor appears to be still fitted) Please could someone confirm whether that is correct. Thanks Kevin

Help: Import tax Germany

#zbitx
Yesterday I have received an email from the German tax office. It appears that my zBitx is stuck in the tax office¡ Never received something like this request before. Is there anybody from Germany out with the same experience and how to react? 73 Peter email received: WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT How do you do? sBitx schematic for rotary encoder board?
44
#sBitx
#sBITX_v3
I've been digging through all the schematics and I don't see anything for the rotary encoder board? While the board that's in there is functional, I'm not a fan of how bent the board is. Seems like a quick easy task for me to design a board that fits properly, but I need to know which encoders are used and if there's any other devices on that board.

Hey eveyone I have recently received my zBitx and it is making alot of electronic noise either on battery or any other PSU. There is a constant electronic noise then also a periodic pulse. Is this expected? Please see the short video below https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0yt2C6Rt7Xc

Zbitx S meter
Hi, Received my Zbitx today. Many thanks for the excellent service. I wonder what the S meter calibration is. I read somewhere that the Bitx calibration is correct for IF gain of 53. But am not sure whether that applies to the Zbitx. Is it the conventional - 73dBm for 50uV/S9? Thanks Kevin ZL1UJG

Bad USB OTG 'microUSB to USB-A' in zBitx shipment.
6
The added BOXCON USB-A to micro-USB adaptor, white, small, delivered in a red/transparant sleeve is absolute garbage. It shorts the micro-USB port in the zBitx, thus crashing the PI... PLease do NOT add this item to further shippings as the quality can not be guaranteed. I will have to next week for delivery of a good micro-usb to USB-A adaptor, rendering the zbitx useles in the box... Such a shame. Martin, PD0ZZ, Netherlands

How to Type Lower Case from the Keyboard?

zBitx speaker noise?
7
#zbitx
I hear a pulsing noise from my zBitx speaker, even with a dummy load connected instead of an antenna, and both the audio volume and IF gain turn down. Seems to pulse or hum 3 to 5 times per second. Is this normal? Or an issue that needs to be fixed? Anyone else hear this from their unit? If it¡¯s a problem with my unit, any ideas on where I should I look to diagnose and solve this noise issue? 73, Ron

zBitx Running Hot
4
I'm starting to learn the idiosyncrasies of the zBitx. It appears to be running very hot (while not transmitting). The Pi Zero is reporting a core temp of 72 C. That seems too hot, ...and not even while transmitting. (I have a PI5 with a cooler HAT that runs around 50 C) Will external heat sinks on the back cool the Pi Zero sufficiently? Am I cooking it to a slow death? Don in Austin N5CID

Zbitx Display Resolution
If I log into my zbitx using its IP address via nomachine with either a HDMI monitor attached or no monitor attached I get full screen resolution. Nice. But if I attach a dummy 4k HDMI adapter to the zbitx's HDMI port and log in with nonachine the resolution is the same as the internal display I would think that with the dummy adapter attached, the zbitx would view it as a real monitor but apparantly not. Microphone and stand
7
I would like an external microphone for the zBitx and a stand would be nice too. I would gladly pay for both as an accessory. Alternatively there could be an adapter for a standard microphone type, like Baofeng or Kenwood. A stand should be steady so that the internal keyboard can be used. I was thinking along the lines of the KX2 with arms that rotate on the side. Finally, there could be an accessory heat sink since it seems the unit gets rather hot. Thanks for reviewing my thoughts. Again, I would pay for these as accessories. Certainly couldn't expect them given the very fair price for the radio! Jay NM2M

polarity on power adapter 5.5X2.1 for the ZbitX
3
I did a quick search looking for polarity and can find things on the Battery case but nothing specifying the barrel/tip of the connector for power to the ZbitX. Does any one know what it is. I have some connectors but don't have them with marked wires and looking to make me some to use. Thank you Jim KE0VVU

CW straight key sBitx and zBitx
11
I have been working with Mike Johnshoy, KB2ML, on the sBitx 64 bit development. For straight keying I use a test setup of the DUT transmitting at low power into a dummy load with another receiver (K3) monitoring the signal with a short test antenna (a jumper lead clipped onto a PL259 center) located on the dummy load.. The audio is recorded in Audacity and the waveform analyzed by a Python program that detects peaks, times signal and spaces and does some statistics on the results. I drive the DUT with an external keyer to produce a string of perfectly spaced dits. Here is what the 64 bit code waveform looks like in Audacity for dits at 40 wpm. and here are the stats for this sample: Number of dits 24 Number of spaces 23 Average Pulse Duration: 0.043156 seconds Standard Deviation of Pulse Durations: 0.003587 seconds Average Space Duration: 0.041293 seconds Standard Deviation of Space Durations: 0.003424 seconds Cycle length: 0.084448 seconds dot/sp: 1.045122 Now lets look at the same 40 wpm test with the zBitx running 1.06/3.52 and after backing off to about 15 wpm The results are so irregular that I couldn't run any analysis. This confirms for me the difficulty I had in sending with a straight key with the zBitx. The zBitx internal keyer looks pretty good but I, like others, find Iambic B mode to have serious problems. -- 73 Bob KD8CGH

CW on zbitx
53
I have fixed the two issues of zbitx on CW. The new update has good keying with Iambic keyer and the cw decode noise is now gone as well. To get this update, you have to: 1. Flash the new firmware (the firmware version is now 1.06). The firmware is available from https://github.com/afarhan/zbitxfrontpanel/raw/refs/heads/main/zbitx_front_panel_sw.ino.uf2 2. Update the new software on the raspberry pi, the latest version with the CW keyng fixed is 3.051 (or later). Here is Jose, VU2JOS sending CW with the new firmware update. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEVyuFrkBd8 With this, I hope we have moved on with CW issues. - f

Second display on sBitx V2
21
#sBitx
I plugged an HDMI display into each of the micro-HDMI connectors and got no image. My HF station Pi4 easily uses two displays but, of course, no 7-inch touchscreen. What am I missing? (My bitxs are my holiday radios and the sBitX can be my transceiver AND my laptop, very nice for travel.)
