uBitx sound
The sound from my uBitx has no bass. It sounds like an ancient mini-transistor radio receiver. Is the speaker from the Inkits case so bad?? My Youkits HB-1B on the same frequency and small external speaker sounds much better. Inkits case is relatively big, sound should by far better I think.

I like as mine came from the factory. Indeed it has no basses. Also the tx audio sounds the same. In my unit frequencies below 700hz are cut down. Above 2.8khz are also cut. The filter seems to me quite effective. I could adjust the bfo to have more basses and less high. But I prefer like it is now also because the opposite sideband is really suppressed and the carrier attenuated. I see this as I always monitor my tx audio with an external sdr receiver. You need to set your BFO. I had mine get out of alignment when the encoder button got stuck. It makes the receiver sound very tinny and harsh if your BFO is set too high. Lower the frequency 100 hertz at a time until it sounds good to you. |
So we already have a filter to cut audio outside the 700-2800 range?? I was building a SSB-Mite from 4 State QRP Group.? I searched the messages for it and did not find anything.?? Can you tell us where in the uBitx schematic it is.? Curious to compare it to the SSB-Mite.?

It's the 12Mhz SSB filter that limits the audio bandwidth.

Exactly, it's its stock crystal filter at the second IF. Depending on how the BFO was set. If the carrier is closer to the filter bandwidth you will have more basses and less high and less sideband rejection. I see it works like that on mine without any mod. The 4sqrp filter is probably an audio filter like the 200hz very nice cw filter from them I assembled some time ago. The one in the Ubitx is the several poles 2nd IF crystal filter. Thank you all.?? I like Jazz.? On my mp3 player I have a 3 piece band.? Drums, bass, and piano.? The drummer is playing on the snare with brushes.? I plug my SSB-Mite in it and it sounds good.? When I flip the bypass switch to filter the drummer on the snare and the bass disappear but the piano still sounds good.? .? When I tried it in my uBitx it sounded better in bypass than in filter mode.?? Now I know why.? I can use it on other non-filtered radios.

The filter on my ubitx seems narrow.? By feeding in a 1000 hz signal into the mic input and measuring the power output and then going up and down in the audio frequency I seem to have about a 1650 hz to the 3 db down in output power.? Only about 1800 hz or less? and the power out drops 10 db or more. I though by now someone may have tried to broaden the filter.? I have not had time to,but hope to lower the capacitors in the filter some to see if it helps. The small electric microphones seem not to be all that good either from several I tried.? I switched to a Shure amplified mic and get much better audio reports from several I talk to on an 80 meter sched.? I do feed it through an amplifier for about 150 watts to bring the signal up to what they are used to hearing me at. de ku4pt ? Yes..!! I had been juggling around that one. Stock 12MHz xtals have an Lm around 17mH and appeared bit narrow with 100pf caps, I was not happy with the round number IF's in uBitx tried some micro controller 11.0592 ones all in HC49S package now they were way too off with Lm at 24.5nH decent bandwidth was predicted by Dishal with 56pf caps and a sweep on SNA looked very decent but since Dishal does not considers actual? Q of xtals the smoother we make the pass band the worse is the skirt of filter. Farhan often mentioned this so still working around that one to arrive at a compromise. Rahul VU3WJM |
Everyone has different needs. I personally like the bandwidth as it
stands. On 80m nets in a crowded band, the narrow bandwidth is a big help in isolating net members from others only 2khz away.
