uBITX Display Separation Cable
While waiting for my uBITX, I decided to try to come up with a way of mounting the main circuit board at the rear of a metal case so I could use the rear panel as a heatsink for the two IRF510's (with insulating hardware).?
The raduino must remain plugged directly into the main circuit board, so the only way to move the LCD display forward if required is to make up a display separation cable. I found that a discarded computer IDE cable does the job. See the details here: ? |

tear off only the 16 you need. My pack of 120 (40 male/male, 40 male/female, 40 female/female)
cost $10 on Amazon for ~6" long and have been very useful while

the picture is for demo only. Notice the arduino board in behind is not connected to anything but the display. I suspect Al is using the default firmware for display purposes only so missing all the software mods. This method is basically plug n play - no soldering or rework. I like easy!?
If you want to melt some solder then flip the LM7805 5V regulator to the back side so a heatsink can be easily added. Runs alot cooler now. |

You can find those on eBay under DuPont Jumpers. They come in M-M, M-F, and F-F. Some have plastic guards that come off pretty easily. A few weeks ago I watched a documentary on the Voyager Space probes and they interviewed the JPL scientists that worked on developing them. One of them told a story of how just before a few short weeks before the probes were?supposed to be ready, they came to realize that environment around Jupiter was very RF-hostile and they had neglected to shield?all of the cables running from the body of the probes out along the booms to the instruments. With only two weeks left, they??raided all of the local grocery stores for AL foil, cleaned it with pure alcohol, cut it into uniform strips and wrapped?it around all of the external sensor cables to shield them. ?Obviously it worked just fine. ;-) ? Using old IDE cables is a very good idea.
Note that there are many types of cable available, but most of them will be either 40 wire or 80 wire cables. the difference in the newer (ATA) 80 wire cables is that every other wire is used to separate and shield the signal wires. All 40 ground wires will be connected either to the even side or the odd side of the connector, 2 adjacent wires to each pin. In the older cables, there is no ground wire; each signal is routed through each of the 40 pins. It will work, but provides no shielding. Note also that he signal path in the ATA cables has been cut from 40 to 20 wires. That will make little difference to a lcd connection. The electronic difference is in the interface port. It is a good idea to use the 80 wire cable and determine which side is ground, and then connect that side to ground. That will provide shielding for the signal wires and will cut down on RFI considerably. Note that these connectors have 2 rows of 20 pins each. You will be connecting 16 pins for a 16x2 display. Usually, also, these connectors have a center connector for another drive. Cut the cable so that the shortest of the two connectors are at the ends of it. Note also that the result will usually be a cable with 2 female connectors, so that you will have to make a sort of adapter to provide the normal M-F ends. I don't know if all of this information is exactly correct, but I do know that they work very well. john AD5YE |
