UbitX build questions

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

First of all, let me apologize for asking what will be (hopefully) simple questions.? This is the second kit radio that I have assembled and the first one with voice capabilities.? My other radios are all CW.? Which is fine for me.

I just received the UbitX (v4) and the assembly kit (case and other parts).? This version includes a mini PCB that hold the three (03) jacks for the front panel as well as the mic and speaker connection.? I have managed to get everything assembled except wiring the round, 4 pin mic jack.

I cannot tell which color wire goes to which pin.? Any suggestions?

One of the reasons I purchased this radio was the ability to ¡°hack¡± the code.? But I don¡¯t see any USB (or other) port to use accessing the Arduino.? Any suggestions?

I have a 47 year background in software development so playing in the Arduino will be fun.

Any help is appreciated.

Here is a link to the HF Signals wire up instructions:

The USB port for the nano is between the nano and Raduino board.? Due to the history behind the uBitx, the nano is plugged in "upside down" with the USB and reset button between the two boards.? You can plug into the nano while it is on the rig? The USB connection will power on the nano and display, however not the radio.? When doing the "power reset" functions in the calibration process, you do need to remove the USB cable so that the nano will power cycle.

I had/have the same question and stared at images and combed the web quite a bit trying to figure out what to do.
My conclusion (thus far) is that there are too may mic configurations out there, so it appears to have been left intentionally vague.
I think I identified at least 8 different variations of 4 pin mic wiring by different manufacturers.
I am still, slowly, assembling my uBitx and haven't started assembling the mic yet but, I think you will need to study the mic and the photos to determine which wires in the mic match the function of the wires in the uBitx.
In my case I found an old CB radio mic in a junk box in the barn that I plan to attempt to wire to the connector provided in the kit if I can map the wires into the mic to the three connections in the uBitx.

This doesn't necessarily answer the question you have but it might save you some time searching for an answer that may not exist in this case.

Don't forget the URL: ubitx.net . There's a lot of good stuff there.

Derrick

I recently built my v4 ubitx into the same case. It was a snipe hunt to sort out some of the wiring, including staring at pictures of the wire bundles on Sunil's website. I finally figured it out.

He does show one variation for wiring up the 4 pin mic connector. I have my 3 wires in the same order, but not convinced I am following his pin standard. Of course for your ubitx you merely wire your microphone to match.

For integration into this particular case Sunil has also provided some info at ubitx.com. it has been growing in content.

Of course a scattered library of info at the bitx20 IO group here and ubitx.net. its a bit overwhelming so hang in there.

Just one note about using a CB microphone. They are
usually dynamic which means they are like a speaker and
would look like a short to the mic input. If you want to use
one of these experimentally, put an isolating capacitor in the
mic input line so it will not short out the line. Also, if you have
a choice, use a high impedance mic ir maybe a small
transformer to make a low impedance mic look like a high
impedance mic. All this is experimental... But the little eletret
element supplied with the radio can be substituted for the mic
element in the CB mic just as easily. Put it in a cut-out piece
of styrofoam made to fit the old mic's shell and connect the
eletred to the designated wires that connect tot the radio.

For a cable, I bought a stereo-to-stereo cable at Dollar Tree
and cut off one end and used this for the mic cable. A proper
cable was not available here so I used what was for me the
most convenient.

Plug-N-chug is the name of the game, sometimes. It's like the
old Murphy's Law: We may not have time to do it right but we
can always find time to do it over.

Thanks for the advice. I will probably start by 'scotch taping' the eletret to a pencil to test things out and improve the form factor after it is up and running. For now I am focused on soldering things in the right places and testing each connection.?
