RD transistors, unobtanium?

Does anyone have news of this? RF Parts is no longer stocking RD16HHF1 and they have marked RD15HVF1 as EOL. where does that leave us all?

- f

I got some RD15HVF1's a while back at?

but the RD16HHF1's are rare as hens teeth:

I am confused.? Looking at this page:??
RF Parts still lists this as available.

HI Farhan.
Does this mean V2 uBitx will have RD16HHF1 ??!?!

LOl, thanks,

Just ordered ten RD15HFV1’s from RF Parts.? Considering how SLOOOOOWWWW their site is there must be a run on the RD’s ;-)?? .

Also ordered 6 while having a leisurely beer to pass the time between screens.

I am trying to find transistors for our future work. The TDA2822 episode has had me hurting. It is time we identified some long term candidates for RF power.?

An all band SDR using a faster processor? Hi Hi

More like a multiband vhf... but it is not about any particular project. Radio community has inertia with favourite devices. While subsitutes are possible at low power levels, the devices are fewer for our purpose on HF at 12v.
It looka like generics like the IRF510 (which too is No longer manufactured by IRF) are givong away to devices with lower voltages, microwave responses and they are manufacturer specific.

Yes - challenges sourcing Generic parts seems to be emerging.

I like the VHF multiband idea - and this may tie in with your Narrowband FM mod suggestion ... on the Raduino output!? But somewhere along the way you mentioned experiments with an SDR design as well ...

The IRF530 seems to be a very good drop-in replacement for the IRF510.

It has higher power capability with similar specs otherwise. Vdss=100V Id=17A Rds(on)=90mohm.

Mouser carries them in stock (5,551 in stock) 942-IRF530NPBF by Infineon.

(10,36 in stock at $1.07) 844-IRF530PBF by Vishay.

Made by Vishay Siliconix, Infineon,ON Semiconductor, STMicroelectronics.
Available in TO-220-3 and TO-252-3 packages for about $0.90 each.

Another alternative is the MTP3055E for less than $1.00 from Digipart.com.? It's good for up to 30W at 10M.

A good way to compare switcher FET's for how hard it will be
to drive them at RF frequencies is the total gate charge in nano-Coulombs.
IRF510:? 8.3 nC
IRF530;? 26 nC
MTP3055E: 15 nC

The uBitx driver has trouble with the 8.3 nC of the IRF510's at 30mhz.
Good luck with that IRF530.
And the MTP3055E won't be particularly easy.

The IRF510 is very easy to get, Vishay is building all we could ever want.
The WA2EBY amp with IRF510's works fine from 160m-10m.
My LT-Spice? simulation showed the WA2EBY amp
to be much better behaved than the final on the uBitx.
But we need a better way to drive it our IRF510's.

Why not 2SC2078??? ?Classic design, cheaper ?and the same pinout as IRF.

Or any NPN Transistor for that matter?? BD139s were used in other transmitters.? HG Semiconductor makes 2sc2078s, 2sc1969s, 2sc2312s, MRF477, & other obsolete rf transistors.? I have a few of the listed and they have all worked well for 10 & 11 meter equipment.? RF Parts is even selling HG components under their house brand.
I have used all of the above listed parts and have not received a bad part, yet.? I buy them directly from HG.? The parts are reasonably priced and I usually have them in a couple of weeks from China.

Just a suggestion & my personal experience.

RD series are still available.? Local suppliers may be the issue but here in USA its widely
available.? They work ok for 12V only designs.

Regarding IRF530, it can be used and does work at 30mhz but impedance matching
is harder due to the high input capacitance compared to the IRF510.? ?I have driven a
IRF530 at 6M, nice 35w output at 28V but the input matching was 6M only.? Like most
of the 100V mosfets they work much better with higher applied voltages on the drain.?

I seem to recall the IRF-520 being the closest IRF sub for the IRF-510. Never tried it tho. Last time I ordered 510s I also ordered 520s just in case.
