Raduino clicking when microphone is connected or keying CW.

Hello, solder-melters, I wired up the key jack for a straight key. When I key CW, I hear a continuous tone behind my dits, and when I cease transmitting, the tone continuous for about a second, then the raduino clicks and the radio returns to RX. I'm not experienced and have no idea where to start troubleshooting. I've made sure all connections are solid, but I'm starting to wonder if this is a software issue. I am running version 1.08 of KD8CEC's firmware. Any ideas? Thanks! |
I had a similar situation.? It turned out to be my mic jack was slightly loose at the case (the mounting screw was snug but not super tight).? When I plugged the mic in, I was inadvertently (and unknowingly) twisting the entire jack clockwise and it was shorting the mic wiring on the pins against the LCD display assembly.? To correct the problem I rotated the jack away from the short, tightened the mounting screw, and (for good measure) placed some electrical tape between the jack wiring and the LCD display assembly.? Not sure if this will work for you but it did the trick for me.

How many kilometers are between the receiver you are using for tests and the transmitter? If it's in the same room you don't stand a chance. 73, Bill KU8H On 11/23/18 5:28 PM, KN4IYL wrote:
Addendum to the above: It's not so much a squeal, more like a noise you'd hear on Space Invaders or Galaga or something. Sorry for the non-technical explanation, but I don't know what else to call it. --

Are you familiar with WebSDR? Those are SDR receive stations that are shared over the web. You can find them in various places covering various parts of the spectrum. Multiple users can use each one of them at the same time on different frequencies and different modes. If you don't know about them you should look into them and play with them a little. Some key features are: They are not in the same room as your transmitter! Does that ring any bells? :) You get some idea how well your transmitter and antenna are getting out various locations. When you look those up on the WebSDR site they tell your right where they are:) They are not in the same location as your industrial QRM. If industrial noise is giving you trouble at your home location you might consider using one of these receivers at it's quieter remote location and using your transmitter at your home to work other stations you hear on the Web SDR receiver. Choose wisely. If your are using a Web based SDR that is shared from Timbuktu in central Africa from San Diego on 80 meter CW you will probably not work anything that station can hear even though you can hear it. Choose a station that is in your own region so that other hams you hear on the remote receiver have a chance of hearing your transmitter:) There may be some pleasant surprises. 73, Bill KU8H On 11/23/18 6:46 PM, KN4IYL wrote:
Bill, you caught me. The receiver is about a foot away. Lesson learned, and thanks for everybody's input. --

I am currently in the same situation.? I have a simple lapel mic and every time I plug it in the rig goes into transmit mode, it's almost like there's a short.? I've attached the diagram from the BitX40 but it's not quite what I'm looking for.? Is there a good diagram for the uBitX Mic jack with PTT?? The diagrams I've seen don't specify if you're seeing the top or the bottom of the connector. I've attached photos, probably too many, and hopefully someone from this awesome group and point out my error Thanks, Jim? AE0BZ On Fri, Nov 23, 2018 at 7:45 AM KN4IYL <kn4iyl@...> wrote:

i would do some probing with a continuity checker (like your DVM) to see what is what with your construction.? if rig goes into transmit when plugging in your microphone, somehow it is making a connection to ground.? the matter at hand is there needs to a common connection between the mic audio return, and the unswitched end for PTT -- to allow suitable current flow for each function.? if you can tell which microphone connection is attached to the 'braid' this may solve your issue.? or try reversing PTT and ground in the wiring.? now if somehow in your microphone wiring both PTT and common are simultaneously connected - then you would have a short in your microphone wiring.? 73 Curt |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJim,
Does your lapel mike have a TRS (tip/ring/sleeve)?plug or
just TS(tip/sleeve).? If just a monaural TS plug it is shorting the PTT
lead to ground causing it to go into xmit. Just a thought. Also if it has a TRS
plug is the ring isolated from the TS.

Jim,
I have attached an image of the wiring of my microphone for reference. I had ordered extra jacks due to a much earlier construction mistake, so I had some extra to do this with. I wired the microphone to the tip connection and the ground, with the PTT switch connected to the ground lead in the middle. The other lead on the switch is wired to the ring connection in the jack. I connect it to the radio with a male to male plug you can commonly find at convenience stores. The radio side is wired purple to tip, orange to ring, and blue to ground. It looks like your connections are reversed as mine were initially. Hope this helps, 73, Jared KN4IYL? |
Also, an update to my initial post, the tone I experienced when keying cw was a result of poor construction practice. I had the resistor connected directly to the tip connection along with the blue wire. I backed it off, added a length of wire to the lead of the resistor and joined it with the blue wire on the tip connection. Everything seems fine now, and I buttoned her up for good measure.
Many thanks to this community, looking forward to making some QSOs and, more importantly, modifiying and learning. 73 Jared KN4IYL? |
