Also, an update to my initial post, the tone I experienced when keying cw was a result of poor construction practice. I had the resistor connected directly to the tip connection along with the blue wire. I backed it off, added a length of wire to the lead of the resistor and joined it with the blue wire on the tip connection. Everything seems fine now, and I buttoned her up for good measure.
