Introducing sBITX Scanner and All-In-One Installer for my apps #sBitx #sBITX_v3

Hello.

I created another app based on a request for the sBitx platform.

sBITX Frequency Scanner is an application for scanning radio frequencies with the sBITX transceiver using the telnet protocol, making it convenient for users interested in frequency exploration and monitoring.
?
Here is a list of features:
?
  • Provides a user-friendly interface for interacting with the sBITX transceiver
  • Enables user input for defining the frequency range, tuning step, and wait time
  • Bidirectional Scan by defining the start and end frequencies means you can scan up or down
  • Continuous Loop scanning in the defined range
  • Pause allows the user to pause the scan function
  • Displays the current frequency being scanned to aid in identifying RF activity
  • Background color can be changed for better readability and visibility
There is also a Windows version..

I also created an AIO installer for the apps that I developed.

sBITX Enhancements is a convenient installer to add the following applications to your sBitx Transceiver.
?
sBITX Manager: An application that can be used to store frequencies and provide auxilliary control of the transceiver.
sBITX Scanner: An application that scans frequencies aiding in finding activity.
sBITX ScreenControl ~ An application to change the default window size for better scrolling such as using WSJT-X and fldigi natively on the the transceiver.
sBITX Backlight ~ An application to control the screen brightness for power conservation and eye comfort.

I've also added uninstallers to the individual apps and the AIO app.

Thanks JJ, I really like your screen brightness control app.

Thanks Peter. I am glad you are enjoying it.

I also forgot to update the screen size for sBITX-Scanner from the Windows version. I fixed it on the repo. if you have it installed already, then go to the home/pi/sBITX-Scanner folder and rerun the installer. It will grab the changes and push them down.?

JJ,
Do you think you could make a video about it?

I don't stream or publish videos anymore on major platforms. I may show the install on my website at some point. I guess I am not sure why a video needs to be created since it is fairly simple to install and use the apps.

I agree that in many cases it is unnecessary to make a video.
I have also made many videos about the errors I have experienced. I spent a lot of time on this. In the end, no one even responded.
Here, they say that it's a lot of ado about nothing.

Just a thought about the naming.
When I want to launch it from the terminal, I always have a problem with where the CAPITAL LETTER is.
Finally, I renamed them all to small and use them like this :-)

People would like to see functionality of a program before they download and install it. For graphical programs, there is really no substitute for how easily people understand the usage of a program. Convincing people to download a program is a challenge. Watching a video is the easiest way to decide of you need or don't need a piece of software.

Thank you for your feedback. I intentionally used capitalization to avoid public confusion during the installation, management, or removal of the apps. This was to prevent accidental modification or deletion of files in the sbitx folder. Additionally, I selected a unique naming convention to clearly indicate that these apps are not part of the official release and are not supported by the HF Signals team.

I think that is sound reasoning.

One thing: is the standalone Telnet app now super-ceded?

I ask because I've updated our sBITX HowTo's page to point to this thread and list the programs:

  • Telnet Companion App:?link
  • sBITX Companion Apps:?link
    • sBITX Manager: An application that can be used to store frequencies and provide auxiliary control of the transceiver.

... and I don't know if the first line should be retained.

I agree with all the opinions being expressed.? Making videos is a PITA.? Using major corporate platforms has its down-sides for sure.? Yet these days the expectations are that videos exist.? If JJ doesn't make them, maybe someone else who likes to make videos will.? ?

As for me personally, I am pretty willing to download open-source Linux software and give it a try if I understand its origins and intended functionality, but I understand why others are less willing.? ?I'm less willing to do it on other less-secure platforms.

Hi Dave,

I will update the wiki since the applications have evolved. The AIO installer for "sBITX Companion Apps" will be the source for all future updates and additions. Links to the standalone apps will be posted there on the GH page to make it easier to find and learn about the apps.?

I have also been reading the threads and comments to understand common issues that some newer folks are having or even those on different versions such as DE, V1, V2, V3. I wrote a couple more apps to help those safely backup, upgrade, downgrade, etc. Stay tuned.

I am still considering making videos of the apps and publishing them on my website.?

That's all excellent news!? Sounds like you are having fun, and that many others are benefiting from your work.

I've added two more utility applications to the W9JES Enhancements installer.??

?sBITX EZ Tools : Applications to manage version upgrades/downgrades, configuration backups, and more.

There are two applications that have been developed to ease the trouble of upgrading and downgrading sBitx software and managing backups of your hardware settings and the entire sbitx folder.

Very neat solutions and I like them. These tools are excellent for those who do not want to get involved in the mysteries of the OS.
I'm just thinking out loud that it wouldn't be possible to put these utilities in one package and get what you need from the menu.
The pi folder from the utilities will slowly become bigger than it was before. :-)

Paul

Thanks for this JJ, I have a friend with an sbitx and he is not really Linux literate so for users like him this is a big bonus from a user perspective.
I have slimmed down the pi menu a bit by removing some of the apps that are clearly not required on a radio (for me anyway), so not too worried about the number of menu additions for useful utilities like these

Hi Gyula.

Very good suggestion! This is the kind of feedback I like to improve the apps. This project started out as 1 app and has grown to a large collection of apps now and I never expected that. I will work on a work on an "application launcher" this evening based on your suggestions.
