All: I just had a recent death in the family...my G90. I have the EE skills of a tumbleweed and my fat fingers are not made for the G90's internals. I contacted the vendor I bought it from and they said they know no one locally but to return it to Xiegu. It is out of warranty. I'm hoping there's someone in the US who has worked on them before. It is probably simple: pressing the power switch does nothing. It could be as simple as replacing the switch. I'm just fearful of tearing into it. I'd be happy to pay for the repair and shipping both ways. If you can help, write me on my QRZ email with the theme "G90". Thanks! Jack, W8TEE -- Jack, W8TEE |
Jack, possible simple solutions, bad solder connection where the power jack is at, maybe a failed diode on the board from the power supply jack, on/off button, maybe a regulator failed. Also, and i know i have done this too, forgot to check the voltage out of the cable from the power supply. Also an open fuse if it has one, or an open fuse if you have one on the power cord, and also, check to see if the power cord doesnt have a break in the wiring. Ive had this happen before . Power jack might have an internal failure. a broken piece inside the power jack? Also, if you can remove the whole body out of the case, take a magnifying lens and check for cold solder connections. if you ever used it alot or moved it around or taken it outside, thats one thing that can be a simple fix. I made loads of money repairing bad solder connections on consumer products back in the 80s and such working in Lafayette ind. close to your University u used to work at.worked at a tv repair shop close to the city park on main street. I dont contract repairs, anymore , but 80% of the problems were what i wrote above. I would dig out the ohm meter and check these things first before paying someone a buttload of money for repairs. 73 David ac9xh

Jack, Since you have fingers of a tumbleweed, maybe you DO need to ship it out and have it repaired.HI HI. YEs power switch can be bad. alot are those miniature thru hole switches. By the way i have a friend of mine who had a switch break and as a joke i wired up a common house light switch? but mounted it on? top his radio with some sticky tape.2 wires went in the radio ,and i didnt drill any holes or anything to damage his radio. needless to say, he didnt like that at all. HI HI. every year he comes by and brings a box of switches over for my birthday .HI HI. He happens to be a residential electrician, so he has fun with the joke. 73 David ac9xh

David: If I can't find someone to tackle the task, I will dig into it myself. After all, it's a (light weight) boat anchor as it sits. I've checked all that I can without breaking the seal, so that will be the next step. Jack, W8TEE

Hi Ted: I press the power on button but nothing happens. It's really strange because two days before that I checked it out in preparation for a fishing trip with my son. It was fine.? If push comes to shove, I will tear into it is no one comes forth with a skill set better than mine. (Indeed, if they can still fog a mirror, they probably have a deeper skill set!) Jack, W8TEE

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJack,A local ham bought a dead G90 off the internet for $150. ?He opened it up and the trace between the power jack and first component (can¡¯t remember what it was) on the board had burned up. ?He jumped it with a fused connection (I can¡¯t believe the power cord is not fused) and it started working. ?I havent heard if he¡¯s blown the fuse since, but something caused that trace to burn up. ?Good luck. de K4WCL John GalganoOn Jul 12, 2023, at 9:42 PM, Jack, W8TEE via groups.io <jjpurdum@...> wrote:

I'm a previous owner of a G90 I once had a reverse polarity issue, due to a chinese cable I just had from Aliexpress. I was not using any fuse in the power up test of the chinese cable, and what went nuts was: - power input common mode choke - a couple of protection diodes in the power supply circuit (those diodes were acting as a crowbar protection?in case of reverse polarity, protecting the rig short circuiting the input and so tripping the fuse. As I had no fuse the choke sacrificed?itself for the cause). I was able to repair everything in a few minutes, however I realized how risky it is to own such a rig with no support outside china. So I decided to upgrade it for an IC 705. -- Simone Fabris - IU3QEZ |

Thanks, John. My unit does have an external fuse in the power line, which is fine. Since I cannot find someone who knows what they're doing to fix it, I may as well open her up and poke around. After all, it's doing me no good as it is. Thanks again! Jack, W8TEE

Jack,
If you don't already have them, I found schematics posted here. I did not find a power switch per se. Rather, the radio is always powered and switch brings an IC pad low to select between on and standby. Besides a quick optical inspection, I'd first check the output voltage of all the regulators.? I hope that the fishing trip with your son was enjoyable, and that the memories last a lifetime. Gary |

Thanks, Gary. I did not know that the rig is in sleep mode if it's connected to power. Good to know. I'll check the regulators. Thanks for the schematic. Had a great trip with my son. We're doing it again next year! Jack, W8TEE

Hi Jack,
There's a lot of regulators on that design!? The first one to check is the one associated with microcontroller / power button.? That is U5 a 3.3V LM1117 per the schematic.? I didn't figure out where +VEXT is connected.? By the +9 label, I assume 9V.? The other +9 nodes (different schematic sheet) are from a voltage domain that is gated by P-FETs.? I'm in a hardware circular reference.? ?Need to have power from somewhere to power the controllers.?? I did find this "repair manual" Seems more like a factory rework document, but anything may be helpful. I'm betting you tried all the simple stuff before posting, but did you disconnect everything from the radio and let it set long enough to discharge, then try to power-up??Rule out simple things like a com port hanging the boot sequence. Regards, Gary |

Hi Gary: Yes, I worked on it one evening, gave up and went to bed, and tried again the next day. Nada... To all who have tried to help, your efforts on my behalf are sincerely appreciated. It appears the only repair location for the G90 is in China. So, I'm going to dig into it after the T41 project is completed and see if there's anything obvious. If it's still dead, I'll see what it costs to have it repaired in China. If it's too expensive, lesson learned! Again...thanks! Jack, W8TEE

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJack, I had a 3.3V LM1117 short out to 12V in my 10-year-old Elecraft P3.? Needless to say, the 3.3V components on that power bus didn't take too kindly, so over $400 later, I had a working P3 again.? Sigh. Hopefully that's not what happened to your G90, but I've heard that LM1117's are easy to blow that way (maybe from overvolt on the 12V bus, or maybe too much heat dissipation over time?). New designs tend to not try to drop 12V directly to 3.3V, but usually go through an intermediate stage of 9V or less, to spread out the stress. 73, -- Dave, N8SBE On 2023-07-14 11:08, Jack, W8TEE via groups.io wrote:
