Going digital on the cheap.
I am new to this group, and the group system here. And I haven't had time to read all of the recent posts since I joined about a week ago. So please excuse it if I am not doing things according to protocol. I have a question. I have my general class ticket. But no budget to speak of. Considering getting the bitx40, as I like the idea of hand assembled parts, and that getting the kit supports women in India who would have no means of support otherwise. I am primarily interested in digital qrp on HF. Is this little radio suitable for this or is it only good for hand keyed CW? |

开云体育The radio is mostly for sideband. I think some have determined a way to implement a side tone for CW. I think the radio is a lot of fun, and is designed to be experimented with. The group is very knowledgeable, and can provide expert help when things are not working like they should. I highly recommend it.

开云体育Well I will just say I'm not sure if it's stable enough for digital work. Did you get the later model bitx40 with the DDS? Mine was the earlier version and have put a resonator in place and pulled out the coil and caps ?this has made it stable but not enough for Digital. There is a kit to put ?a cw board in it have a look on this site.? Regards Kevin Norris VK7HKN On 29 Mar 2017, at 3:33 pm, kg7owo via Groups.Io <kg7owo@...> wrote:

That's also my plan, though I'm a bit more advanced down that path than you. I actually have a BitX40 and am in the process of boxing it up and connecting the bits. Being quite slow and methodical because I'm not great with electronics. There's a bunch of software and hardware hacks to enable digital modes. There's a couple of things needed for digital:
There's been discussion of all these things in the group. You'll need to hunt through though as I'm not aware of anything that pulls it all together. Check the Wiki, files and archive of this list on the site. On Wed, 29 Mar 2017 at 15:34 kg7owo via Groups.Io <kg7owo=[email protected]> wrote:

开云体育By adding a GPS module and a few lines of code you can hold frequency to .01 HZ. Close enough for any digital mode. I am using the NEO-6m-0-001 and it is nearly as good as a disciplined oscillator. You simply count one of the oscillators using the 1PPS signal from the GPS as a gate time and comparing it to what it should have counted and applying the correction. As an extra you can calculate the grid square and display it based on Lat and Long along with GPS time. Gene Marcus’s article in QEX will give you some great ideas. I have stolen a number of them for my rig. ? v/r Fred W4JLE ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Kevin Norris via Groups.Io

To answer your question, out of the box the Bitx40 is not intended for digital QRP. It's SSB only.? That's not too say that it couldn't be modified for some digital modes. Roy, WA0YMH On Mar 28, 2017 11:34 PM, "kg7owo via Groups.Io" <kg7owo=[email protected]> wrote:
