Alligator Clips

Bill Robbins

Fellows builders.? This might seem trivial but bear with me.? I cannot find a source of GOOD alligator clips.? I have purchased new clips in bundles of 10 at ham shows, etc.? When pinched they tend to go side to side rather than vertically.? I search the web but don't trust the photos and representations.?

Anyone?

I agree,a lot of alligator clips for the low current circuit voltage type are very flimsy and tend to twist.I happened across some better quality ones at a UK radio rally and bought loads and made my own up.All the fleabay ones I have seen are flimsy.

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy.? When you go for the least expensive parts,
sometimes you get just what you pay for...cheap parts, poor performance, and so on.
Alligator clips (crocodile clips in some countries) either have mated indentations for
the hinge, or a rod through both parts to make the hinge.? The rod or axle type hinge
is more accurate, reliable, and precise...but they do cost more.?

Many places sell similar items.? Just do a Google search for "alligator Clips" to
see what is available in different configurations.

You might? also look for "battery clips".? I have found some of these to be a bit better, although they are bigger (and a bit more expensive).

The DROK clips on Amazon look well built, I may get some.
You have a choice of 50cm and 100cm long.
Wire used is said to be 22 awg, from the photo it's 19/34?(19 strands of 34 gauge).
The 34 gauge strands are each 0.16mm diameter:??
Colors are limited to red and black, but some extra red and black seems a good thing.

Mouser item?548-287 is ten 46cm long multicolored leads for $8 from Mueller.
I doubt they're built anywhere in particular, but the datasheet claims they are
also using 22 awg 19/34 wire.? Wonder how sturdy their alligators are.

Mueller is a brand name I recognize, the datasheet is probably accurate.

Adafruit has twelve multicolored leads for $4, they say it's 22 awg wire, 38cm long.

If these really do have 22 awg stranded copper wire, this is an extremely good deal,
my best guess is they are similar to the Banggood leads described below.
Generally seaking, Adafruit has a hands-on crew of engineers playing with and documenting all their stuff,?
they eat their own dogfood.? I tend to trust them more than most vendors on the web.

The set of fifty multicolored leads I bought from Banggood for $13 have 10 strands of copper.
I measure each strand at 0.07mm diameter, so roughly 40 awg for each strand.
This is not as stout as the 22 awg 19/34 wire (19 strands of 34 awg) used on the products above,
but probably typical of most offerings on the web where wire size is not specified.
Somebody in the "Answers" section says it's 22awg stranded, this is definitely wrong.??

They work well enough for my purposes, though when something doesn't work I've learned
to be suspicious of them.? Wire is wimpy enough that I don't have to fuse my power supply,
when the PVC covering gets drippy hot I know I messed up.
Even though I am incredibly cheap, these go in the trash if the alligators get bent
to where they no longer grip properly.??

Really?
Hand made with 22 awg stranded copper wire at? $3.95/12 = $0.33 each?
??

If somebody has these, a photo of a disassembled end showing the strands?
and some sense of the scale would be much appreciated.
Better yet, count the strands and measure the diameter of one with an accurate caliper.
??

That HF caliper works well, but the SR44/LR44? type battery will drain out in a few months
even if left "off".? Buy a bunch of batteries, they're cheap.? Some cheaper ones now on Amazon
only resolve to 0.01", a good one is 10x better.

Hi Jerry..everybody,

I have a set of machine-shop micrometers good to .0001 inch. Send a package or two of those and I will disect one, measure the wire diameter and count, photograph them, then post the results here. And finally I will properly dispose of all the leftovers <sly grin>.

I bought what looks to be the same one from a random amazon seller a few years ago for a few bucks less. You are exactly right, I just opened the case to compare it to the HF one you showed and as expected it is dead as a door nail.

Hi,

Mueller and Pomona are very good quality.? You? can get individual Mueller clips from Mouser etc to make your own.? It's nice to make them with flexible silicon insulated wire.

EZ-Hook grabbers are often times handier for working with parts on circuit boards.? These are high quality grabbers that will not "unfold" at the slightest pressure.? They also make nice "pincer" types that are easier to attach/dettach parts leads (especially IC's).

I git a box of assorted clips with screw-terminals & shrouds from Aldi recently. It has about 30 altogether in a few sizes. Much higher quality than the cheap flimsy ones you are talking about.

I have been using the DROK ones from Amazon. ?They aren't cheap but then again I was looking for good, not cheap. ?My search was over after buying them.
