Daylight Radio PTO -- 3D printed inductor forms

Reading about the Daylight radio brought back some past circuits and experiments involving PTO's 30 years ago.? I thought it would be interesting to go back and revisit them.? To that end,?I asked the library to print me a couple of each flavor but somehow I ended up with extra.

Free to a new home (maybe someone that is interested in a club or group build) are what you see in the photo.

VU2EHR, our friend RK, just upgraded pto. File. I am forwarding it in a separate email

Please send me a rubber thing that goes into an LED holder for a power on LED in a WA2EBY linear amplifier.? One of the leads goes through one hole, but I can not get the other wire to go through the other hole.? It was not drilled through or there is something in there that won't let the other lead go through.

Please send it to:

Edinburg, TX 78540-0751

Thank you.? ?I probably have another day's free time work to go on installing the lowpass filter board, and then I need to solder in the transistors before I will be finished with the amplifier.

Dear Ashhar Farhan,
Could? you please sent me the new 3D printed PTO files?? Or tell me where I can find them.
Thank you.

Has anyone successfully printed the PTO former and installed the nuts?? I found that both nut holes were too small for the 1/4 x 20 brass nuts I picked up at Home Depot.? I ended up cracking the the plastic while trying to tap the end nut in with a hammer. I have a Creality Ender 3 Pro and was printing with PLA.? Any suggestions?

I am not working on this project or following too closely but when I add nuts to a 3d printed piece, I always make the hole smaller than the nut, then I put the nut on my soldering Iron set at 200c and put the nut on the end of my iron and press it into place.? Do it quickly and the filament will melt it into place.? Please practice this technique on a disposable print first.

I had a friend print 2 of them for me.?? I thought Ashhar said the nuts were M6?, but the ones I tried did not fit. I need to go to the hardware store.? The soldering iron idea won't work for the center nut...

These nuts seem to be in all sizes!
My first few prints went well. The subsequent batch of nuts dont seem to be fitting well enough. Does anybody else have any ideas?

I'm trying to find me a source for these as I don't have access to a 3D printer. It looks like a really cool design and would be fun to play with.?

Just a thought occurred to me, that might have been thunk already... but? anyway I am suggesting that those nuts do not have to be of brass... that might supply a wider range of nut sizes to assist? with finding nut hardware size that would work.? the bolt however still needs to be brass I? would think.

another thing that could be also done would be to get oneself a good bastered flat file, find a good solid vise somewhere. And simply file down the flats of the chosen nut one wanted to use a little at a time of course, until a good fit was finally found. and bingo one is ready to go, along with a little glue around the outside of the nut might help also.

those flat files were sometimes also called "mill basterd" files and are quite? commonly most times found wherever millrights or machinist work, and source there tools from.

Ashhar,
Scaling up to 1.1X allowed use of brass nuts from a local hardware store. I do not remember who suggested this. Will the larger coil still be usable?
Thanks,
Craig

It shouldn't really matter. We will just put fewer turns

Scaling up is a good idea.? But here is what I found....

From the McMaster catalog (and as measured) - standard 3/4 x 20 nut is 7/16" in width (11.1125 mm) the hole as measured in Fusion 360 is 10.053 mm.? Therefore the hole is too small for the nut.? And since the PLA tends tends to change dimensions slightly as it cools I would recommend increasing the size of the hole to something like 11.15 mm.? If it ends up a little loose a drop of super glue will suffice.??

For another project I used melt-in nut inserts and with those and that worked fine but difficult for this project.

Aaron,

If you're looking for someone to make the PTO form because you don't have a 3D printer try JLPCB ( ), I had 4 made for me for $3.96 + $3.69 ($8.65 total) shipping by Global Direct to Wisconsin, USA. They look just like in the attachment except white (PLA resin). I'm sure there are others out there in cyber space and maybe even some libraries can make them for you. I'm not affiliated with JLPCB; I just use them to make PCB's occasionally when I can't mill them myself.

Scaling up by 10% worked perfectly.? Nice snug fit - easily able to insert the nut with fingers.

Now to wind it up and test!

Dean, looking good.. If you seem? to have some extra play between the screw and nut, wrap the screw with a layer of Teflon pipe thread tape. It takes some of the wobbling out.

Dear Dean,
On the other? PTO stl files I had to increase the part by 10% on all dimensions.??? Now the nuts fit perfectly.?? In CURA you can arbitrarily increase or decrease a parts size by a percentage before you slice it.?? Then slice it and print it.? then judge from there if you need to increase it or decrease it? until the brass nuts fit.?? That may also change the size of the turns used but you can adjust that after you get the PTO oscillator built by taking turns of the 30 turn end of the coil.?? (on my other one it was about 4 or 5 turns.?
I didn't need to raise my mechanism up so I did not use the part your printing.
Take care and have fun.?? Good luck.
