BitX40 Builders Fest opportunity (edit to:) Modders who have wares, boards, add ons, cases, what have you, BitX family

I used the image again for ease of getting the message across, will delete after Jan 6 to free up space.

Since there will be a heavy presence of BitX40's and ?BitX's converging in on Morristown Hamfest on January 6, 2018, at the Builders Fest, I am sure there will be just as keen an interest in some of the add on boards, mods, cases, what have you's that some of you on this talk group provide for sale or even just for the sake of sharing, either way, if you have any interest in your STUFF being at the Builders Fest in any Fashion, contact me, KM4YEC, we would like to see it there, too. We are going to roll out the Builders Fest info in the next few days. So, if you have any interest contact me soon.

Craig:

I can bring some of my TFT/VFO PCB's that can be used with the BITX40. I sell them for $8, but since I won't have to ship them, I can sell them for $5. Let me know if I should bring some. It changes the display to this:

Inline image

The SW? fields at the top are for up to 50 "canned" CW messages and are tied to NO push button switches...very useful during contests. (They can be cahnged at run time.) SW1 is set to message 1, which is shown at the bottom of the display. The V field is supply voltage, WPM is for the built-in keyer, and GEN:CW means that the current frequency is ok for General class CW. An off-board RTC can be added, but it's not part of the board. The PCB is bare, but looks like this:

Inline image

An AD9850 fits on the left and a Mega 2560 Pro Mini sits on the right. Pins not used by the VFO or the display are brought out to the header pins shown...perfect for experimenting.

Dr. Jack,?

I have 2 (ea) of those boards that ordered from you sitting on my shelf above the bench in plastic bins already kitted out to build. ?I was thinking already to use one of the boards, if not partially kitted out (small parts) as a door prize or maybe as part of the (Image only entrants Best in Show prize) possibly making the Image only entrant prize a B40 board and an Antenna Analyzer Board (as I have a couple of those too). I digress. Not decided yet. Going to roll out the whole Builders Fest entrant rules later today.

Yes Sir. We would love to have you bring your boards and if you have a few boxes of something else, bring that, too. ?As we have a table set up for you already, we are hoping to see some of your projects there also. ?

I will put the Boards on the list of things to see there and buy there.

Come on I know there are more, I have bought some of your adapter boards, agc boards, and inquired about some of your add ons....(I too have a priority queue)....get with us about either displaying your stuff, selling it, or we need door prizes.

So, Dr. Jack, bring your B40 boards for use with a Bitx40. We have a place for them at the Builders Fest on Jan 6 at the Morristown Hamfest.

I don't have any of the AA boards (Nov., QST) as they all went to QRPGuys. Given what I sold before the article and what's been sold since, it's closing in on a thousand boards. I will bring the B40 boards with the TFT/VFO on them. I may have a few Forty-9er boards (i.e., AD9850 Type I and 16x2 LCD), too. I think either is a pretty good deal at $5, as the quality of the board is pretty good.

Don't use your board as door prizes; I'll donate one each instead.

Thank Dr. Jack,?

I had four Antenna Analyzer boards, we built two, so some kind of way two are available, and we have two built two different ways to show.

I have a forty niner kit in a bag that I intended to build, and I have probably 7 or 8 of the AD9850 adapter boards, and I already put a call out to some of these guys who sell these things to see if they want some exposure there. If I missed any of you, contact me. The response is looking good.

I am going to have two bitX40¡¯s and one ?Bitx on my display table along with Antenna Analyzer and assorted other stuff.?

?Bitx ¡. maybe looking like this

I kinda like it, although there are no guarantees, this is my template mount.

I am working the placement of the knobs to be able to twiddle while hooking my little fingers in the cabinet pulls (2 pack from walmart).

Getting ready to start putting the door prizes, rules, etc¡.on the web¡.if you have something BitX related, contact me, and it will be displayed in the same room as W8TEE Homebrewing presentation and following Roundtable.

Hi Craig:

I have been messing around with where I want to place the controls for over a week! Come on, Jack, just git-er done! I'm going to start drilling/cutting today!

I'm going to make a capacitive touch keyer that plugs into the jack and will be about the size of a key fob. That way, it doesn't stick out from the case cuz I can unplug it. It also means I can plug a different paddle in if I want to. I want to cast it in clear acrylic with embedded touch pads. I'm starting to think I won't put a speaker into the unit, but will probably have an external one handy. I'm thinking about a trimmer pot for the side tone on CW, as it's pretty loud. This one will be my "stock" ?BITX. Two more are on their way and will be for experimenting/development.

So....Where can I get more info on the cool color display & PCB you mentioned in this thread? Also will it work, or do you plan to offer ?the code, for it to work with the new new uBitx transceiver? That would make it super cool! Thanks.?

The code is available on the group's web site. Eventually, there will be a new board for the ?BITX and it will use the Si5351 instead of the (hard-to-find) AD9850 II. It's going to take a while to do the new PCB. More and more it looks like we'll be switching to the Teensy 3.5 and away from the Mega2560. We'll need the extra speed down the road.

Yeah i bought 5 of them too and donated them to the YOTA of IOTA... and would like to be able to upgrade them to the TFT display too... and best of all ill help you do it with whatever lifting you need. ? I already have an adjustable audio bandpass and notch filter on the drawing board for it that should be really cool. ?Hoping to be able to send a couple of voltages to the duino to show the shirts and width of the filter/ notch on the TFT for adjustment (with a little code).?

The SW? fields at the top are for up to 50 "canned" CW messages and are tied to NO push button switches...very useful during contests.

An AD9850 fits on the left and a Mega 2560 Pro Mini sits on the right. Pins not used by the VFO or the display are brought out to the header pins shown...perfect for experimenting.

In that process Jack could we have a look at the current draw of the TFT? I haven't commissioned my VFO/TFT for the BITX40 yet but the current draw on the Antenna Analyser, which I think uses the same TFT,? is around 300 mA, which would be less than desirable for battery use in the field. Maybe introduce some means of winding down the backlight on the TFT?

The TFT/VFO will depend somewhat on the size of the display you use. I can't find the current draw right now, but I thought it was 180mA for the 2.8" display. I'll keep looking.

Sorry, I should have said that the current drawn by the Antenna Analyser is around 400 mA. Worth a look to see if we can't get that down for the uBITX VFO/TFT, asuming the use of the same size TFT.

That is what I have done. ?I have a small external communications speaker, I can place it somewhere comfortable to hear, or I can drop the audio level and the noise and hold it against my ear, or I can unplug it and plug in the head phones..

Then with these utility builds that I do, I am thinking of in future builds incorporating a place within the case to place the speaker, mic, dc input cable, etc, when not in use, or to provide an attachment arrangement so that everything is in its place as one unit. ?Not for looks, but for the sake of keeping track of everything, as these builds travel with me and with others to every local builders event as well as every local operating event.

I've also discovered that with a small speaker like you have in the picture, you can take a thick rubber band, wrap it around your head and wedge the speaker between the band and your ear. The downside is that people in white coats start chasing you all over the place when you do it in public.
