Using hot glue around supplied mic - good idea, stupid idea?
Thomas Noel
开云体育Paul,You could “Pot” the components in epoxy, so long as the switch is sealed against liquid entry. All the bits are cheap enough to make the try low cost if it fails. As to hot melt glue, there are some that are lower temperature melting point than others. If you want to try, heat a teaspoon of glue to runny and pour on just a bit to coat everything with a thin quick-cooling layer. Let that cool and then fill the cap. The first layer will protect the components from the later pour. Thomas W Noel KF7RSF

开云体育Awesome rig. But is your PA transistor connected to the metal box, or is there an insulator there?

Instead of HOT glue , 2 component Epoxy might be a safer option. Frank,?? GM0CSZ / KN6WH?????? in IO87AT On Mon, Apr 24, 2017 at 11:35 PM, w6png via Groups.Io <w6png@...> wrote:

Fernando - Nice that you recognized the Mosley. They are pretty rare. I was lucky enough to have one like that in the mid 60s as my first real ham receiver. Simon - There is a standard mica insulator between the PA and the heat sink. If you ground the PA tab you immediately let the smoke out somewhere on the board. Frank - Epoxy is forever. It makes rearranging difficult. The hot melt you can peel off. That said, some cable strain relief is useful. I used shrink wrap to protect the mic cable and a zip tie as strain relief. |

I used a hot glue gun on mine and it worked fine. I think I must have the "kids" hot glue system as it delivered "not too hot" glue which was encouraging until I realized the viscosity was very low. As a consequence have glue within the cap but not quite where I wanted it! However, I did apply a little super glue around the mic and switch to set them into the opening before applying the hot glue. With the strain relief it all seems good enough for the time being. As I want to take the Bitx40 and mic out on a SOTA activation (www.w6png.wordpress.com) what I ended up with seems fine. Thanks for all the comments, guidance and suggestions. Paul? |
