ubitx mount question regarding lcd display and bezel
While I'm waiting for my blown U1 replacement parts, I'm finishing up on my ubitx case.? I'm not sure the best way to mount the LCD display to the case.? I've read a number of posts but did not find the exact answer I'm looking for.? Using the metal standoffs which come with the kit does not quite fit with a nice Digikey bezel mentioned in other posts.? The bezel looks really good, but if I use the mounting hardware, the screws will overlap the bezel corners and show.? I have some plastic standoffs which I could countersink, but the color still does not exactly match my Jaemco case.? I've thought of using a metal glue for the standoffs but I'm not crazy about that idea.? I've seen posts where others used larger bezels or custom bezels.? But I'm wondering what others have done when using the Digikey bezel.? Enclosed is a picture.? Any thoughts?

Hi Tom, Not sure what bezel you have from the many that Digikey offers. My guess is that you are more interested in mounting the LCD without any visible fasteners. I know that some have mounted the display using only the pins into the main board for support and found that to be sufficient. That method does require careful positioning of the board and I see yours is already in place. Looking at your layout I think you could make some brackets which would be held in place by the tuning encoder, jacks, and volume control and hold the display from behind avoiding any thru holes in the front panel. Brackets could also be attached to the bottom panel to do the same thing. Of course you could get another bezel big enough to cover the thru front panel fasteners but it is always rewarding to figure out how to use what you already have. GL and looking forward to seeing your solution. 73 Willy On Sun, Mar 11, 2018 at 9:45 AM, Bert N8NN <bertgarcia73@...> wrote: Tom -- Very nice tuning knob!? 开云体育Mounting any LCD on a panel is a pain in the butt. Here’s how I did it without drilling holes in the corners to hold the display. After you have painstakingly cut and filed the panel to allow the display to fit, fasten four .250 aluminum standoffs, one on each corner, and tighten with the correct screw. Use the shortest screw you have. check fitment and if necessary file away any panel material that might interfere with the display. using a sharpie pen, mark the corners. Don’t worry about being accurate, just a general location of each standoff will be enough. remove the display. use a bastard file and scratch around the area you just marked. The idea is to rough up the material. Now, mix up a small batch of JB Weld. Apply a generous amount to the bottom of each standoff, trying not to fill the hole up. (that’s why it’s best to use short screws so you don’t epoxy the screw in!) Mount the display and with clamps, clamp the display onto the panel. I use small Irwin clamps and wood paint stirring sticks.? wait 24 hours. Whoa! You’ve mounted the display without trying to locate the mounting holes and without drilling holes! Unless you go in there with a channel locks, you’re not going to be able to break the bond between the epoxy and the aluminum.

Here is a solution that I used..
QRP- labs.com /enclosures front panel . There are unmarked panels that the display fits in,with four holes around the display that the jacks fit into nicely . I'm not sure how long shipping will take from Japan, but I bought a few for later projects . It is nice to have extra stuff sometimes. 73 Dennis |
Thanks to all for the great input!? Now, I've got some good direction on what to do next.? Very helpful!
Bert, I got the tuning knob idea from a vintage Swan 270B I have torn apart for repair.? I found a place on ebay which had new knobs: ??????? Swan Fluted Tuning Knob for Amplifiers & Tuners ??????? I actually made a mistake on this part.? They have 2 models: one with a white marker on the dial (above) and one with no markings on it.? The seller was great and corrected the order for me before shipment when I reached out to him.? Look for ke9pq on ebay.? I think the actual part he corrected for me was:? "Swan Fluted VFO Tuning Knob with 2" Skirt & Alum Inlay".? Shipping was free and super fast (only took a few days). Tom AB7WT |
I wound up using Mike's JB weld solution (thanks Mike!) but I used shorter standoffs and put the JB weld on screws instead of longer standoffs.? This way I can still unscrew the standoffs.? It worked well and the screws are solid.? The display and bezel look nice.? I later got rid of the long display cable in the picture for a short one.? Thanks!

开云体育Tom, what case did you use?
Thanks Tony
