Bitx40 no RX

My Bitx40 arrived yesterday. All wiring is ok, but no rx. I heard a strong noise coming from the amplifiers, and I noticed Q3 is auto oscillating... Anyone knows how can I fix that???

Still Not Working

Hi guys, those of you that saw my posts earlier in the week know that I have not been able to transmit with my Bitx40. It was sort of determined after going back and forth with a few of you that the final was blown in my radio. From the moment that I turned on the radio I've had a dummy load on it so I was really going to be surprised if the final was blown but it was worth a try for all the more the replacement IRF510's cost.?

Well I'll I unsoldered the original final and installed a new one that I bought from Digikey and it still doesn't work. Power on with no speaker attached it pulls 150mA. With the mic keyed it pulls 267mA. The blue trim pot has no impact on receiving or transmitting current. It's rock solid at the values listed above. I don't see any imperfections on the board and I hear the relays pulling in when I key up. I have power connected to the PA connection.?

As much as I want this to work I really feel like giving up and that I've been had by Mr Farhan. I know that may be a cardinal sin for saying that on here but it seems like I have no recourse other than to turn him into PayPal at this point in time. I'll admit I'm an Electronics Technician although a little rusty after being away from component level troubleshooting for the last 25 years. I don't think it's been too much to ask that as long as I didn't make any wiring mistakes that this should at least receive and transmit after doing the wiring. Any help would be greatly appreciated.?

Bitx40

Is it possible to purchase a Bitx40 minus the Raduino.
I damaged my Raduino, and replaced it with a new one, since then I have repaired it by replacing the nano, so I now have a spare.

I should have read your post BEFORE I tried soldering U2. Still trying to find U2 #1

Re: Crystal matching for ubitx

Hi Dale, I am working with double side PCB and grinding out land's for components as per Ashhar Farhan's prototypes. ?There were a few posts that mentioned PCB's earlier this year but I have not seen anything recently.?
Jim?

Re: Crystal matching for ubitx

Farhan is right. It is less important that the signal level be as such and such,
than that they be frequency matched as closely as possible. Of course it helps
if they exhibit about the same activity, but it is secondary.

I think what you have is the one xtal in the batch which gave perfect resonance
in your oscillator. Sometimes that happens!

Yeah, more time at the pub...

Re: Jack W8TEE's BITX40 VFO/Display board in VK and ZL

Good show, Bill.

I am sure most if not all of us "bystanders" appreciate it.

Now if I could only make a QRP contact with a VK or ZL... (sigh).
Around here, looks like grey line AM is about best on 40m.

Re: 2 BITX-40's

Hey, Ron --

I know it can be a bit of a visual pain, but really you should be worrying
less about how it looks than how it performs. I have wound and mounted a lot of
toroid coils and, at first, they would pull through the holes is such a way that the look
was very awkward. But, as long as they were wound well and were soldered in properly,
they all worked very well.

I suppose one has to wind and mount a few before learning the tricks, such as pressing a bit on the coil
before soldering to make it upright...but all the coils properly done with good materials worked. And that
is the real test. Hi.

Wait until you start winding baluns and such. Yikes!

Ok! O have inserted a 22p in the c102 and a variable trimmer in c103 from 5 up to 60p
Very good results so far

VK3YE Improved audio mod, Using a variable capacitor in place of C102

In this video, Peter shows how to modify the audio by changing capacitance at C102 (47p).? The change in audio characteristics applies to both RX and TX.? Peter shows how a slightly higher tone is an advantage while using QRP.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IELJwapv5qs

An alternate method to using capacitors of fixed value is to use a variable capacitor.? This allows trimming the capacitance while listening to audio.? You can select the tone you wish to hear and transmit on.

The following capacitor from Digikey will fit directly into the C103 holes.? Note that C103 is parallel to C102.? If this capacitor is added, remove C102.

I have done this mod and it works on RX.? You have to adjust the trimmer capacitor a bit to get good audio RX; when out of range, things sound a bit strange.? But after initial adjustments, you can fine tune it in.? I raised the tone a bit to pass more of the higher frequency audio.? I have not received any audio reports yet, so I can't speak to results on transmit.

Re: Bitx40 All done

Much much better. Added fine tune on the back as a button and commented out the tone it would create. Last thing's to do is AGC (waiting on my 2n7000's) and mic gain control after switching to a dynamic it needs some gain might change 3904 out for another version.

Be OK its a very good radio kit?

Hi to all,

I have been impressed with this groups willingness to offer information helping others.? In reading the posts here I have learned a lot.? Great Group!

I received two bitx-40's about the 14th of June-2017.? I was very impressed with the speed of delivery.? I decided to order three metal cases from Jameco and they arrived last week.? My grandson and I got all laid out on the table and then took the two bitxs out of their cases to check for missing parts and never finished checking because of what we saw.

On the first board we took out, one of the coils was laying flat.? I pulled up on it to straighten like the others.? I stopped at about 45 degrees because it seem to tighten too much to continue.? I checked and seems there are no wires pulled out.? I think its number was 138.? What to do?

On the other board has the majority of the coils leaning very badly but not flat and I cannot tell if any wires are pulled loose.? I do not remember its number.? What to do?

I am very concerned about pulling any farther on the coil of the?138 board and for that matter any of these coils on both kits, especially the two small coils on the second board that look yellow to me but I am old.? I just put everything back in their respective cases with a very disappointed grandson.? The second board looks like someone drove a miniature 4x4 through the coils?having a lot of fun knocking things over.? Very disappointed myself.? I bought three cases and was going to order a third BITX-40 to convert to 20m as soon as we had the first two going.? But it will surely depend on this outcome now.

I will surely now have to wait for a magnifying lens that is lighted to see if anything is broken loose.? One with the sweet spot in it that magnifies more than the larger portion of the lens and with a very good light system.? Again, old with old eyes.

I, my grandson and granddaughter will appreciate any and all advise here,

I am indeed testing them with a simple colpitts oscillator.? But what I was really trying to understand was why just one crystal from a different batch resonated so much more strongly than the other 60 crystals.? I figured the low resonance would result in higher attenuation in the resulting filter.?
?
I initially thought the cause was that the other 60 were overtone crystals but that does not seem to be the case.? Perhaps it is something to do with the way they are ground to frequency.? Unfortunately the spec sheets dont seem to help on this side of crystal behavior.?

In any event I will follow Jack's suggestion and try Rex and and other Ham oriented suppliers.

Re: 2 BITX-40's

Hi Ron
Don't worry too much about the positioning of the coils, the yellow ones are the LPF and BPF, I would check the pads underneath them for continuity with a DVM, maybe move them a little*, check again, and if they pass this test, then go ahead ad assemble your BitX, have fun!
