Re: To shield or not to shield, that is the question.
I put my bitx40 in a metal "collectors" Star Wars tin I had kicking around (I say "collectors" because they're not really collectible -- they sold millions of 'em, and my friend had a pallet's worth in his garage). The metal is a bit thin, leading to some flexing when you plug/unplug peripherals, but it's just the right size and easy to work with, while providing some shielding.
Plus it looks kinda neat, even if my fabrication skills are lacking. -- Jon Tabor KI7JYE |
Re: 7.277mHz Sunday Afternoon
Imho, many hams have ceased to operate the ubitx until they make the mods to be fully compliant. Others just like to test the board to learn and experiment. Last weekend many active ops were busy for the cqwwcw contest. The 40m band also is not that wide outside North America, in Europe we cannot go beyond 7200, so having two rarely used separate frequencies one for NA and one for the outside does not help. Personally I would operate at or around 7177mhz, regardless of the CQ zone, the time and the day of the week. Re: 7.277mHz Sunday Afternoon
Yes Vic and I had a nice qso. I listened on and off after that but quit when I was getting an AM carrier.?
Vic said that he used his bitx40 as a mobile rig at times. I found that very interesting. Perhaps you would start a thread on that.? I do monitor 7277 at times.? My rig is usually my ubitx v3? I run the finals at 20 volts Have a new 1000 foot loop antenna.? |
Re: uBitx Go Box 3d print
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks Tom. I recently printed one of the paddle keys from Thingiverse and one of the uBitx mikes.?One thing I did that was useful was print a fly fishing reel and I have installed a 66¡¯ long wire on it marked at points with heat shrink sleeving. I can unwind the right amount of wire as an EFHW then for very band from 40 to 10.?
I can recommend the Prusa printer. I built mine from the kit which was straightforward and a good experience.?
Cheers

Re: uBitx Go Box 3d print
That is a very nice design. The outer case looks like the case I bought at Harbor Freight. I was thinking about mounting the uBITX and a Raspberry Pi in it, also. I just bought a 3D printer, I may go with your design. Although, I'll likely mount the uBITX board to an aluminum plate and add a little shielding.?
By the way here is another interesting 3d case design I saw while I was poking around for uBITX and Amateur Radio things on Thingiverse.? Judging from the number of uBITX things I saw, it looks like the people that hang out on this group are just the tip of the iceberg of the number of people that are doing things with uBITXs.? Re: Software
Check out this link: Not sure if this is the file that uses the full screen, or just recompiled with the higher resolution set (screen is same working size as the smaller screen, just works with the 3.5" display).? You will also need to use the correct 3.5" version, normal or enhanced.? They are not interchangeable. 73 Evan AC9TU |

Re: RF power chain mods and improvements..
Andy,
I've always used 450degF with my smd stuff and have never had a problem soldering anything. I don't use a pointed tip but one with a small flat on the end, a *very* small flat. Don't remember where I got it but it works. The only problem with it is that when it gets hot it bends easily so you have to be careful about the pressure you put on it. tim ab0wr On Sun, 25 Nov 2018 14:51:03 -0800 "AndyH" <ahecker@...> wrote: I understand that heat's bad.? Re: Power supply
I'm using one of the 12V outputs from an ATX power supply that literally came from the dump.? I was dropping off the garbage and noticed an old PC lying on the ground.? The power supply and CPU heatsink came off without any tools, so they came home to my junkbox.
Just to be sure about the noise, I hooked up an 11.7V Li ion battery (from a model plane) and it made no difference noise-wise. It was an expensive-looking PC, so? maybe it had a better-than-average power supply.? The usual audio in PC's is 16 bits, which is ~85 dB dynamic range, so a premium PC that's going to get hooked up to a good stereo is going to want a pretty quiet power supply. |
