Re: sBITX and PSK31 #psk31 #sBitx

Ashhar,
Thank you for sending the steps for me to follow. You have a lot of folks with questions to answer. There are probably just a few who use PSK31, so just put my questions lower in your priority list.

I followed your steps and got a decode of a mode identification message that had been sent at the beginning of a message,
It was? Before RSID <<2022-08-09T15:38Z BPSK31 @ 14070000 + 1530>>?That was the only message that decoded intelligibly. I also tried monitoring 40 meters but did not get any go decodes there either. And I did narrow the bandwith so that it was centered on the signal.

As you suggested, I touched the CLOSE button and switched to the Fldigi window. Before switching to Fldigi, I had centered the red line on the center of the signal that I wanted to decode. When I switched to Fldigi, I noticed that the two red cursor lines were to the right (higher in frequency) than the center of the signal on the Fldigi waterfall. The offset frequency displayed below the waterfall in Fldigi was the same as the frequency displayed in the pitch box in sBITX. While in Fldigi, I could not change the offset frequency. I switched back to sBITX and by trial and error, I adjusted the pitch control. Switching back and forth between sBITX and Fldigi, I continued to lower the pitch frequency until the cursor lines in Fldigi enclosed the strongest part of the signal. Unfortunately, I still did not get an intelligible decode. I understand that there may not be a direct correlation between the red pitch line on the sBITX waterfall and the red cursor lines on the Fldigi waterfall, but I thought I'd experiment to see if I could get a good decode. I also tried raising the IF level but that didn't help either.

I will continue experimenting and let you know if I observe any other behaviors that might be helpful.

Thanks for your continuing support!?

The AGC screen offers a choice of FAST, SLOW or OFF and is selected as above.

The initial DPS screen offers a choice of setting the DSP Center Frequency (CF) or Bandwidth (BW)?and is selected as above.

Depending on whether CF or BW was selected, the screen scrolls through all valid values for the parameter, using the UP/DOWN buttons or the scroll wheel, and the CENTER button to select it

This packs a LOT of functionality into a device measuring 32MM in diameter.

Re: #sbitx user interface layout changes proposla #sBitx

Some user interface observations and some thoughts
And first - thanks for such a great radio and great fun.? Was planning to build the T41 with a nephew but that went astray and am sure glad to have the sBitx and playing with it more than the KX3 and 7300.

Observations:
1) Keyboard is really important but selectively used
2) Keyboard as is is too small and challenging
3) Keyboard takes up valuable real estate
4) Function button are needed and cool but adjusting is tricky - for instance adjusting the pitch frequently results in turning the record capability on and off as you slide around trying to adjust pitch
5) Function buttons are small
6) Any alternative around burying functions into hidden pull up menus is frustrating and eventually requires a pHD in the Radio manual to become a proficient operator - KX3 complaint

Suggestions to consider:
1) Remove the keyboard and expand the function buttons considerably including a button three times larger on the left that says "Keyboard"
2) Bringing up the keyboard actually brings up a near full-size keyboard with a large button on the left that says "Hide Keyboard"
3) Divide up and separate all the function buttons into two groups based on whether they are push to operate (AGC and Bands) versus adjusting like Volume, Pitch etc...
4) On the left put adjusting buttons with a good separation of screen between the next group on the right which is the push to operate functions
5) In the middle of the two groups but a sliding adjustment bar that is used to adjust the left hand functions
6) The sliding adjustment bar could change color to match the function button selected or could have a bright color and the function name above it when that function is active

Just some thoughts to use as you see fit....
Best

Anyway, I replaced replaced the LM338 with a switching regulator. This one was very inexpensive, less than a dollar. It is also very efficient and small. Unfortunately, I dont know what it is called!
I am attaching the pictures. There is a tiny pot on it that controls the output voltage. I added a 22 ohms, fat resistor to the output pins and adjusted the output to 5.4v. Then I took out the LM338 and installed this. The ground is a thick and very short connection to a mounting hole (I used desoldering braid). The input and output is wired to the LM338's pcb holes.
I am running this for a while before declaring victory.
If someone can identify the chip and the regulator, I will be grateful.
