Re: BITX ver 5 Display Problem

Dennis,

Rereading my post, it may not have been clear on how the 12volts get to the Raduino board, it is coming in on pins 15 and 16 of the header between the Raduino and the large motherboard.

The pins on an LM7805 are:

Hello Paolo,
There are SMT packages of the J310 which have a part number:?SMPJ310

Here is Mouser for EU?

When searching, search using: 310 JFET Transistor
or: 310 JFET

I recently got a cheap US$9 SMT Practice Solder Board from Amazon.com.? Gikfun.? ?This is so I could practice soldering SMT parts.??

Other places that have the J310 through-hole part listed.??

Mouser will be getting some J310 in SMT packages in the next month or 2 or 3.

Newark will be getting some J310 in SMT packages in the next month or 2 or 3.

Does anybody know what JFETs that are not a J310 that can be a drop in replacement?

Can you use a J309 instead of a J310?

Here are J309 in stock in a SMT package at DigiKey

I know a design for the Norcal 40A used a JFET PN4416 and another design used a MPF102 and a later design by Wilderness Radio used a J309 which was later substituted with a J310 for the QRP Tech 25th Anniversary Edition because the through-hole J309 became unavailable at the time.

So, could a J309, MPF102, or PN4416 JFET be used instead of a J310?

As for 2N2222, like Ashhar said, you can use 2N3904 instead.

Or you can use PN2222A.? And I think MPS2222A as well?

Key Points:

* 90 dB Dynamic Range, 80 dB close-in Dynamic Range

* 3 D Printed Rock Stable, Low Noise PTO

* Uses 3D Printed Air Core Toroids!

* Cost Less than $20 to Build

* Simple to Assemble

* Undo the Love - who needs 50 Ohms

* Uses 5 MHz QER Filter

* VFO is at a very low frequency of 2 MHz, able to decode FT8 Signals no Problem

* Receiver Mixers are pairs of JFET 310 in Cascode

* Active Devices 2n2222a, J310, IRF510

* IC's 5532A, NE602

* Uses a PTO, No Air Variable Caps or Vernier Dial Needed!

* PTO is Linear

* It is no more complicated that the BITX Rigs

This is *not* a Bi Directional aka BITX Rig. Only thing shared is the Crystal Filter. One can build the Receiver first, get it operating before constructing the Transmitter.

Evan, thanks for the info. I knew about the regulator. I? wanted to know the power input pins to confirm a possible bad regulator. When I received?my kit the? regulator was bent down almost?flush with the board surface.? I gently
straightened it back up. I checked the leads with a strong light and magnifying glass looking for cracks but none apparent. I will check voltages again. Thanks

Re: Farhan's Analog Again The Daylight Radio

I really like this design - simple, but high performance.

I apologize if this has already been mentioned, but I don't see it in the thread here.? One error that I believe I'm seeing (or, at least, something that might trip up folks trying to build at home) - RL1 appears to have reversed behavior from RL2 and RL3.? That is, RL1 is shown to be in the TX state with the relay's NC state, whereas RL2 and RL3 are in RX in the relay's NC state.? I'm assuming that RL1 is intended to be driven with the TX net for consistency with RL2, but as currently drawn you would want to drive it with RX I believe - or else the first receive mixer would be switched out of the signal chain on receive.

Re: Farhan's Analog Again The Daylight Radio

@Paul: "Here in europe j310 and 2n2222 are "obsolete"" and "High expedition costs"?
First, I think you should ask yourself why you want to have these semiconductors. If you look at the schematic (and as explained in the text), many other semiconductors could be used.
For I used 2N3904.
These or other 'general purpose NPN transistors' are maybe even already present in your shack or at a colleague amateur that has them once purchased. Via AliExpress these kind of components costs less then a few Euro's per 100 pcs, including transport and tax. If you do not have the J310 (or other fets!) you could even consider ordering dual gate mosfets.

May be it is a good idea to make others enthusiastic to build this (or another) transceiver and build together. Then the component costs are further reduced and you can support each other.

Expedition costs are expensive, Mouser 20 euro, Digi-key 18 euro, etc.

It is a big idea to buy everything needed by a single seller: what do you suggest?

bypassing the microphone is done by just desoldering and removing it. Gain could indeed be set by selection and it deliveres enough output to drive (via the volume level potmeter) the LM386.

Re: uBitX problem

Vic,

Glad you found the problem. ive seen alot of components break down under load,or in other terms under circuit operations. Before i was in engineering i worked as a depot repair tech. working on everything and anything. Most of the "dog" repairs as we techs call them,were either semiconductor failure under load or capacitor failure under load.

the failures were from the junction break downs, either BE, BC,or sometimes CE. these even tested good on the good transistor testers and also on a scope.Only when applying the required voltage and allowing current to be detected,in the circuit, would you see the breakdown of the signal from input to output.,and when said components were replaced, it solved the problem in a majority of cases.When current,or the pressure of the electron flow gets to a big enough pressure,you have punch thru on any or all junctions that were damaged from heavy static and or lightning.Sometimes you can pick this out with the component heating up,but alot of times the component will act like all the others off the shelf until put to the test.

David, you win the prize! After confirming continuity right up the the leads of Q911/912, I pulled them from the circuit. Alas, they tested OK on the little transistor checker, so I confirmed that all the resistance values and circuit paths were OK and then installed 2 new 2N3904's after matching hfe values on the little tester (not really needed, but couldn't hurt). Surprise, output power has returned! The event that caused this had clearly taken Q90, and it did test bad after removal, but these 2 must be breaking down under load or something as you suggest. Power is only slightly less across the bands than before, but that could be that I am running slightly lower voltage to the finals today. While things were spread out across the bench I did remove the regulator circuit that was providing the lower power to the main board, but only after the transmitter repair was successful.

Evan, that RF probe you suggested has the identical circuit, including the component choices and values, to the one I cobbled up on the bench that helped trace the problem. Still, it is a much neater package than my perf board and clip leads, and quite inexpensive, so I have ordered one.

Thanks to you as well, Raj, for your suggestions. I was rocking T8 around and even bridging the capacitors with parallel? caps trying to get that signal to the next stage. The support from the community here is fantastic and I may have just chucked this thing without all the ideas, but it has been one of my favorite rigs and has traveled with me a lot, so I am glad to have it back and functional.

By the way, I also have a BitX40 and it blew a driver stage some years back because of being near a 500w amp that was transmitting, so the back-to-back diodes mod was made as it clearly had a weakness there. I was never sure the uBitX had the issue, but I had installed the diodes as many had suggested before this event. At one point in the diagnosis of the problem I pulled them, suspecting they might have shorted in the event, but that made no difference. I haven't bothered putting them back in at this point since they clearly didn't help in this case.

Re: uBitX problem

Re: BITX ver 5 Display Problem

Dennis,

The display gets its power from the 5volt regulator on the Raduino board.? That is powered from the 12volts through pins 15 and 16 on the main display board.

I would verify the in and out voltages on the LM7805 regulator on the Raduino board.

ADX transceiver

Hi all,

Sorry the off-topic. You all probably already know ADX, but just in case:

It is very simple, but seems cool for digital modes using single tone, and it is totally free and open source, just like the great uBitx!

I have traced my no display problem to lack of power. Whap pin or pins on the bottom main board connector supplies power to the display assembly?. Thank Your

I recently finished up my version 5 and lo and behold to my surprise, I have no display. I have?
checked all the wiring over twice and cannot find any errors. Has anyone run into this problem.
All other functions appear to work but really cannot tell what's going on without the display.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: ft8 interface connections #ft8

Thank you for everyone who gave me pointers on this.

I ended up using just the USB sound dongle without any other interface - could receive happily, but no-one was hearing me, and PSK Reporter wasn't showing much in the way of reception. Tried various things, including checking the antenna SWR at the 20m FT8 frequency (around 1.3, so pretty good). I was just not being heard.?

In the end, we diagnosed a poor audio signal from the software as the most likely culprit, as everything else seemed to be working correctly. So I put the mic cable (modified to avoid the constant T/X, as advised) directly into the iMac's phones output and set for a really good output level. ?Bingo! Suddenly I was being heard allover Europe & even had reports on PSK from Iceland & New York at 6600km. Then I made 4 QSOs in Germany & Netherlands within about 10 minutes. I don't doubt I should finesse the installation a little more, but right now, with two audio cables, a micro USB cable & a ?4 sound dongle, I have a working set-up.

These sets are amazing - thank you Ashhar!
