Re: V6 audio output.

Most of us find that the LM386 drives a speaker adequately,
though speakers, environment, and ears can all differ significantly.

I'd start by trying out other speakers, this can make an amazing difference in volume and sound quality.
Perhaps bring some small device such as a transistor radio into a second hand store,
try driving the bookshelf stereo speakers from the headphone jack, see what works best.
Maybe even bring your old speaker into the store with you to do an A/B test.
But of course, be sure to let clerk know what you have in your pockets as you enter.

Plan B would be to make use of a small sound system of some sort that has an AUX input jack.
If you don't happen to have one, that second hand store probably does.
This would be an excellent solution if you usually use headphones anyway.

Most of the audio amp breakout boards these days are Class D, which can be much more efficient.
Class D means it is switching at perhaps 100khz or more, this can create hash in your receiver
if the board is not properly filtered and shielded.
That may work, but it is safest to stick with an old-school analog amp.? Like the LM386.

Another consideration is that most small audio amps are designed to run from one or two batteries,
so a power supply of 5 volts or less.
Easiest to have an amp that runs directly off the same 12v as the uBitx.? Like the LM386.

That said, most of those 5v class D audio amps could probably be made to work without too much trouble.

Perhaps somebody else can recommend a good 12v analog audio amp.
The TDA2003 looks promising:?
With the feedback network shown, it should have about the same gain as our LM386.

Re: uBitx V6 firmware 1.2 upgrade

Try this link for the tft files:

I have not seen a difference in performance, and had problems finding a tft file for the enhanced.? I would go with what is available, though the enhanced may give more options if you want to modify the file.

uBitx v6: Display flashing when switched on #v6 #ubitxv6

hi

i built the uBitx v6 transceiver last summer, tested it? and then put it to one side while working on other projects, Now I have come back to it and expected it to work. Unfortunately when I connect power and switch on all i Get is a screen that flashes white, and does not display the default screen. I have searched this forum for any info that might help, but nothing AFAICT.

Anyone else seen this effect? Any guidance will be useful ...

Thanks!

Re: uBitx V6 firmware 1.2 upgrade

Evan
The site uBitx.net does not show the 2.8" screen software? So you can use the basic Nextion?? and also the Enhanced would be better??
I do know the wiring for it I found it online.
Happy New Year

Re: Problems with connecting to computer for digital

I found that if i plugged in the USB cable into the uBITX before turning on the volume knob the interface worked. If i had the uBITX running and then plugged in the USB there were connection errors. Something to try.

Re: BITX Rx problem

Alex

See Rafael's instruction. The bfo comes unadjusted and yours may be way off. The bfo is the oscillator for the final mixer in receive path. It must be precise to create the audio, as the difference between the signal passing through the sharp IF filter and the bfo determines the audio we hear.

Using your dvm you can check for open or short connection at the rf coax, also you can unplug speaker to use headphones.? but my guess it may be bfo.

Re: BITX Rx problem

Hi Alex

I had the same problem. First the sound was very faint and too high pitched. Then someone here or in the FB group suggested I should tune the BFO. The sound improved, but the reception was still too low.

Then, as I was testing an antenna I tuned to 10MHz, where the time station in Brazil is, and couldn't hear it. The problem is that I live a few miles from this station, so it should be very strong! This gave me the hint to do a frequency alignment.

I followed the procedure in ?and the radio became alive!

Hope this helps!

Re: BITX Rx problem

Double check the speaker cable where it plugs into the board. If not perfectly aligned and connected, there may be no audio. It's hard to reach in the corner of the board but it happened to me so it could also to you.

Hello and Happy New Year!

My name is Mircea Alex. Nemes.

I recently ordered and received the BITX V6 transceiver relatively
quickly. I assembled this transceiver without any problem, it started the transceiver
but it has no reception in any band. The touch screen works, you can
change the frequency but apart from the background noise you can't hear
anything (neither voice nor CW).

I appreciate any help in solving the problem with the lack of reception.

Thank you,

Re: Broke off screw mounts from screen

I remember once VERY CAREFULLY soldering a wire to a broken screw (just a spot of solder) and using this to back out a broken screw. One it clears the surface sufficiently, grab it with needle nose pliars and use it to back out the screw.

Re: Broke off screw mounts from screen

I think I see that a screw is broken off in the standoff. If it is a screw, it can be removed by drilling a hole in it and using a screw extractor but if you do not have the tooling for this, it is too dangerous to contemplate and may not work for you.

Best is to use a new standoff. It is a small hexagonal unit with threads in both ends OR a threaded section on one ene and screw threads on the other end.

O believe you may get the standoff at Hobby Lobby or at some electronic superstore. A good hardware store may also have them if they have extensive hardware stock. Problem is that none of them may have them with metric threads.

You could substitute with one with what they have with the proper length and get screws of the proper dimensions that will fit. However, the problem is that if the original standoff screws into the display itself, it may also be metric but maybe it is mounted with a screw that can also be sub'd with one from a hardware store.

You can also go to a mechanic who can extract the screw. Good ones have to do this all the time but usually they have to remove much larger screws. But a good one can do it.

Hope this helps.

Re: uBitx V6 firmware 1.2 upgrade

Jon,
That depends on which Nextion you have purchased.? Also on what features you may want to add.? A good source is ubitx.net in the download section for larger screen sizes.? For the 2.8" Nextion that can be forced into the stock case you can try this location:

In the above are also the wiring instructions for the screen.

One last point, some of the screen programs were built using the older LTS Nextion editor, and will not fit into the 2.8" display using the newest Nextion editor.? You need to worry about this only if you want to make changes.? Just be sure to get the correct size and model (Basic or Enhanced) tft file that matches your display.? Be sure to load the screen files before you install the Nextion into the uBITX, as the default orientation puts the microSD card slot on the bottom (this can be changed if you take the source and modify it with the editor).? All you need is a 5volt supply to power the Nextion screen.? Some of the screens come with a microUSB power tap that can be used for the setup.

Have fun and Happy New Year!

One other thing you said about having the correct program for the Nextion? where does that come from??

Re: uBitx V6 firmware 1.2 upgrade

Evan
I do not have the Nextion yet, but it is on order. You answered what I wanted to know you cannot use the stock uBitx screen. I thought that!
As for the Xloader, and as you say it is just my Firefox that is trying to stop it.
Thanks for the information, that helps a lot. I am to old for this (87), but I like playing!
Happy New Year stay safe.

Could I use Balena Etcher?
Jon,
Before you try to flash the KD8CEC firmware, do you have the Nextion screen and the correct program for it?? The KD8CEC firmware will not work with the stock uBITX screen.

Since Xloader is free, the author did not register the program with Microsoft or any other program verification site.? As such it will trip the warning when you go to download it.? I have bypassed the warning and not had issues.? I cannot vouch for the site that you are using but would think that it is OK.

If you do not want to trust the Xloader site/program, then you have two options:
1 - download the source code, set the correct #defines in the ubitx.h tab in the Arduino IDE.? The zip file contains only hex files that need a hex loader.? Balena Etcher would not work as far as I know.
or
2 - follow the instructions in this link to use the Arduino uploader without compiling the source:

To make sure all know how to help you, can you tell us what you want to accomplish by switching to the KD8CEC firmware??
