#v5 Audio, Ground? #v5

Odd situation.
I have a working v4 in a metal case (from )
It has been working fine for a long time.
I had ordered a v5 months ago and finally decided to put it to work. I installed it in the same case the v4 was using, kept everything the same.

The v5 powers up fine, display great, output power fine (into a dummy load) but NO AUDIO.
The interesting thing is that if I remove the board from the metal chassis (just unscrew it and lift it a bit so the board does not touch the metal posts, the Audio come back!
Touch the chassis with one of the 4 holes in the board, NO AUDIO!!

Any suggestions? Is the v5 substantially different from the v5 that something in the periphery can affect it? (mic, key, earphone plugs, encoder/volume, power supply)

Regards and thanks,
A

Ashhar/Hans

hams everywhere are truly blessed to experience fine radios.? all was meant to try to 'redeem' a thread focusing on concerns with the size etc of the uBITX (one can wonder where the term micro comes from?) - so I merely invited him to consider the QSX.? I appreciate the correct path each of you has taken to benefit a vast number of ham ops.?

my v4 ubitx and QCX are doing well, ditto for the U3S.? (I hope to finally check how the v4 works with shielded inductors and an added xtal filter, but I may not have spur data for a while - but if the rig works decently I suspect it will be pretty good also with spurious).?

those unexpected features on the QSX are quite welcome.?

sometimes I get concerned that those of us in the West dominate the list - I have learned wonderful info from Raj and Sunil and others in India and other places.? please everyone, enjoy your building and radiations.? belated happy 2020,

Re: uBITX V6.0 For Sale

BUT, can you do things like add a new modulation scheme, like FreeDV or other codecs?

It seems that would require SDR-level coding, something that couldn't be easily bolted on at the UI level.

Would there be a codec "plug-in" interface?

This is not correct. The QSX user interface CAN be changed. Everything about the user interface is configurable. Display layout, operation of knobs and buttons, etc. You could also build your own totally different front-end hardware and interface it.?

Writing your own code for QSX totally would be very difficult; and the only way would be to physically remove the microcontroller and put in a new blank one, then do all your programming from scratch; someone who is capable of that would be capable of rolling their own entirely (hardware and software) and I would be surprised to hear of anyone actually doing this.?

The QSX does include its own programming language which controls the UI and many other features, and can be modified by the owner.
It is powerful and flexible and allows a lot of extensions to the QSX. It makes the QSX very hackable, both in terms of hardware and software. At the same time it shields the owner from the most complex parts of the code, and protects the IP.?

Re: New uBITX Ver. 6 Assembled Today

A good SWR meter can be got from Ebay for not very much. I have never owned an antenna analyzer - a SWR meter works just fine for a lot less.

Thanks Andy!? ?Xloader is perfect for my situation....

Re: Need to Calibrate the V6 #v6

Thanks Ashhar, that got it done although I had to find WWV on 5mhz since the 10mhz just wasn't strong here.?

Some thoughts:

Would it be possible/reasonable for you to store the BFO and Freq adjustment numbers in EEPROM?? I had to go back and forth from setup to regular operation to finally get the v6 accurately at zero beat and each time the BFO and Freq adjustment numbers would revert to their defaults and I was starting from scratch again.? Also, the tuning speed could be damped down a bit; it seems far too jumpy right now....

I experience similar difficulties with settings and freqs shifting during the button press. But too many miles for me to get a ham/electronic hobbyists candy store as it were hihi.? Only one here was a morphed Radio Shack (aka TheSource) and since Bell Globemedia took it over all the hobbyist candy inventory has been removed; now they just flog cell phones TV's and Express Vu Sat TV. selection for us is really gone downhill.

Good call. It¡¯s just a contact closure so you could do both in parallel if you wanted. :-)

Dope. Read Andy's stuff but not the initial prompt. I don't have any suggestions beyond xloader for Windows and using the Arduino IDE or avrdude for anything else

You might try Xloader if the PC's or laptops are running windoze OS's; no equivalent for linux flavors I have found yet.

I just put arduino IDE into a linux box and tried to get a hex file imported into it but no go. I did a quick compile / export sketch, similar code to what is in the Utube video link below, to duplicate the resetting of the ubitx nano using an android phone USB link because, as Reed and others have pointed out the way the nano is mounted the reset button is not readily accessible or visible so the arduinodroid seemed like a good option.

also need a Micro USB Male to Mini USB Female Data Sync & Charge Adapter Cable to connect nano to phone

One would be well advised to do all your familiarization with the arduino IDE without the nano in the uBITx connected as the IDE has some features that do a couple of things in a sequence and then upload your practse sketches. I use the export sketches options to obtain compilations and hex files to study or work with. Maybe invest in one of the cheap arduino uno boards or kits to do experimenting.

Here are a few

more vid tutorials NOOBIES might want to go through first before embarking on blind mouseclikkin' fingerpokin :

I had received a hex file from Reed and hence I am trying to find a work around to upload it from my linux box. I spent a few hours watching video tutorials so haven't yet got a good solution for using my linux box to do this; I have a nice large (32") bright display on it to be able to code in arduino sketches with ease rather than tiny little dim laptop screens on battery.

It looks like one needs all three files as shown in att pic to be able to view the actual sketch code in the arduino IDE window; and the the two hex files to upload directly ( one with and one without the bootloader) an .ino and 2 .hex files.

I find it very helpful to hold the dial still with one hand and push the dial in with the other.

That said, the first time I encountered the setup was by starting the radio up while holding the encoder in.

That forces a screen recalibrate (use the stylus and be precise), and then it goes into the frequency setting (defaults to 10 MHz, I don't know if that can be changed easily, but I was able to zero-beat to WWV on 10 MHz), then on to the BFO setting (use the audio spectrum analyzer found here:??-- for the life of me, I can't find it anywhere on the various BitX V6 web pages -- Ashar PLEASE put a link on the V6 pages to the BFO tuning aid).

The trick to using the BFO tuning aid is to use the Chrome browsers and enabled access to your laptop/tablet microphone.? ?You will then see the tuning aid appear on the page.? Turn up the volume on the V6 on a blank area of the band, and adjust the BFO tuning until the noise is centered between the red lines on the audio spectrum display on your laptop/tablet.? The red lines signify 300 Hz and 3 kHz, which should be the pass band of the crystal filter in the V6.

Hope that helps,

TSW Teensy 4.0 to NANO Adapter for the V6 (and software) #ubitx #v6

Just in case you'd like to read through the software operating manual to see what it looks like when run on the Teensy 4.0 with our T4-NANO adapter (NO hardware mods are needed to the uBITX V6 Raduino).? I've attached the software operating manual in PDF format to this post.

To clarify a point that was asked earlier this morning, If you are not planning on using the Iambic Keyer, you DO NOT have to add the extra paddle jack which might require drilling a hole in your pretty new case (as one commenter put it).?

Since provisions were made to use the PTT (Push to Talk) line exclusively for the HAND KEY when in CW mode (it's still PTT in SSB modes), you can connect a hand key to your uBITX via the existing microphone jack on the front panel of the uBITX Factory V6.? The hand key wires up to the "RING" (middle) contact which is the PTT contact and to the "SLEEVE" (GROUND) contact of a 3.5 mm miniature stereo plug.? Leave the "TIP" (center contact)? which is the actual microphone contact unconnected for hand key operation.? Doing it this way means you don't have to drill an extra hole in your case and also if you happen to have an external keyer, simply make up a cord to hook it's output line to the RING and SLEEVE contacts of a plug and you can use your external keyer with the V6 uBITX, NO mods necessary to the uBITX, it's pretty case or the Raduino.

Should you ever want to put the NANO back as the processor, all you have to do then is remove the Teensy 4.0 adapter and replace it with a NANO programmed properly with the right code to run the uBITX.?

BTW our software still uses the same CAT routine Ashhar has in the Factory V6 program code so you Digital guys can still run your DIGI stuff with TSW's T4 programming.? The "open source" source code for the first public release of this software is TSW_T4tftlib_V6.3.1L and is in the program directory area of the TSW website

Now that we figured out how to keep from having to make any hardware modifications to the V6 Raduino or even to the new case of the uBITX,? there have been a number of orders for the adapter boards, both bare boards & kits.? For that, the TSW crew thanks all who have inquired or ordered.? Your support is much appreciated.

Again, Thanks!
