May I ask what schematic are you refering to?
I have been thinking about using a MSA-686 MMIC (approx. the same as MAR-6) with a variable PIN-diode attenuator at it's output as the 1st IF amplifier in my homebrew ubitx to get AGC. The MSA-686 should have plenty of gain to waste in the the the attenuator, maybe even too much. :) However it should start compressing only around -3 to 0dBm at the ubitx antenna connector, so I should be safe. |

Thank you for your details troubleshooting tips. Details of my uBitx is at /g/BITX20/message/73904 I dont have a battery. So I kept my PSU connected. I use a metal box. Still I wrapped using kitchen aluminum foil. Following your steps, I observed that the moment I connect my antenna cable, I start getting the local broadcast.? So is it concluded that I need High pass filter? Could you please suggest any DIY High pass Filter ? 73 vu3onx |

glad my spurious matters (rather small in the whole picture) got you interested to build the v3.? Jerry summarized it nicely - best to avoid bands above 17m on SSB.? I am not recalling the CW details, but I remember it to be reasonable on 40 and 20 meters - and above this no concerns with harmonics.? do build and enjoy some QSOs with a rig enjoyed by many around the world.? 73 Curt |

But depending on the part, the technique, and how well the board is glued together, it might decide to rip the pads off the board.? Not good. Chipquik is useful in a lot of situations where crush and clean is not an option. Especially if you want to save the part. In my decades before Chipquik, my go-to method was to use a hot air gun with a tin foil mask over nearby parts, pluck the part off with tweezers. But neighboring parts often shift once the solder melts, and too much heat can also cause pads to delaminate. Here it's $12.19 with free shipping:?? Also on Amazon, of course.? On V6, the connector to the digital board has two extra pins. These don't disturb the original configuration of the original connecotor, they bring the keyer pin and the ptt to the main?board to be routed to the keyer and the mic connectors. You could still plug in an old 16x2 LCD raduino into the new v6 main board and it will work all the same. Now, about running the v6 firmware on v5 board, you will have to jumper gnd, 5v and the six data lines between the old raduino and a tft 2.8 inch display. I will post the pictures soon. I noticed that too. The "CONTROL" connectors on the v5 and v6 appear to be reversed. Ill check this when i get a chance. Apart from that ,a quick glance at the schematics for both, the only differences i noticed were the TFT wiring plus the keyer and ptt lines from the main board to the raduino.?

This kit was made for the uBitx specifically, with all appropriate holes and openings as needed. This case is suitable for a recent version of the uBitx, NOT the V6 model with the touchscreen. And the main board now has connectors right on the board, so you hardly even have to know how to solder. Otherwise same as the v5, which has been very successful. You may not have access to QST, but they had a very positive review of the v5 in the Sept 2019 issue ?? Given the new display, there is a fair bit of different firmware from the v5. Could be a bug or two lurking there yet. The reviewer did think he should have more mike gain, perhaps not realizing that this could come at the cost of out-of-band spurs. He also notes that power output drops off as you go up to the higher bands, which may be why he wanted that mike gain knob. You may decide to add AGC someday. There will undoubtedly be new and improved firmware as time goes on.? But the uBitx has matured considerably since v3 and v4. You can just unbox it and plug things together to have a working rig that meets FCC specs. Band pass filters sound like a simple way to do a spur fix, but almost impossible to do well enough. For example, when transmitting on 15m at 21.45mhz, the problematic spur will be at? ?45mhz - 21.45mhz = 23.55mhz Good luck building a filter that attenuates 23.55mhz by 20 or 30 dB while leaving 21.45mhz unmolested. ? ?v5 has a new low pass filter at L31,L32,C205 to block the 90mhz harmonic of the 45mhz IF ? ?R26 is now 220 ohms, to increase current (and reduce distortion on large signals) ? ?Transistors Q20,21,22 are now BFR93W for lower distortion (less harmonics) at 45mhz I have listed those in what I consider to be their order of importance. Changing out the transistors is the most difficult, and the other two changes may well be sufficient to reduce the spur enough to meet FCC regs.? I suggest using a low temperature alloy such as ChipQuik if removing those transistors: ? ?? You first wick away most of the old solder using solder braid and flux, then add a bit of the ChipQuik as if it were normal solder.? If that ChipQuik is more than luke warm (via either a soldering iron or a $20 hot air embossing gun) it will be molten, making it easy to pluck the transistor off with tweezers. ChipQuik will also be useful when removing the old relays, if replacing them with Axicom relays. You must either replace those relays or use an external filter appropriate for each band to prevent harmonics from going out on the air with a v3 or v4 rig. Here's the discussion in the forum where Farhan developed those changes:? ? ? ?/g/BITX20/message/61645 Note that there are 70 messages in that thread, and there are other such threads. That particular message doesn't mention the transistors, but the 2n3904's simply don't have sufficient Gain-Bandwidth-Product to work well at 45mhz, and so distortion occurs? which produces that 90mhz second harmonic.? But if the filter of L31,L32,C205 is successful in preventing the harmonic from reaching the first mixer, that's most of the fix. For better performance during receive, you might also want to change out Q10,11,12? to the BFR93W's.?? How swapping out L5,L7 for shielded parts would reduce this particular spur is a bit of a mystery to me, but could well be the case.? Shielded coils would prevent high magnetic fields in the nearby final amp from getting back into the IF amp, so worth doing if you have them on hand.? There were other? problematic spurs beyond the 45mhz-DialFreq spur that this could cure. There were a bunch of other changes around the audio amp for v5.?? If you have an LM386 or a non-DX branded TDA2822 working in the audio amp, that should be fine. The discrete transistors of v4 worked well enough for many, but if you have trouble with distortion or insufficient power it should be easy enough to patch in an LM386 or TDA2822. That new 2n7000 is there in front of the audio power amp on v5 to reduce annoying PTT pops in your received audio when keying the mike, but is not essential. Lots of changes to the final power amp for transmitting, these bring up the transmit power? on the higher frequencies.? Without these mods you may only get a watt or two at 30mhz, while getting perhaps 10 watts on 3.5mhz.? But these mods are hardly worth the trouble. I would just use an external linear such as the 10W linear from QRP-Labs if you need more power, though you will need an appropriate attenuator between the uBitx and that amp. Be careful of increasing mike gain beyond what's available in the design as shipped from hfsignals. Increasing mike gain to compensate for loss of gain in the transmit power amp at higher frequencies means larger signals in the IF amps, and thus more distortion in those amps and in the mixers, and thus far far worse trouble with spurs which you won't be aware of unless you look it over good with a spectrum analyzer.? The rig can sound fine on the air, and still be putting out significant out-of-band spurs if the mike gain is too high. This uBix V6, is this a ready to run model, or is there a number of fixes needed again? Dont mind the fixing but if not fully documented, like some, it can take a long time.
