Edwin -- why did get those exact thermal switches? Because I wanted the fans on, until it got warm, then turn off. And that worked perfectly. hahah.
No, actually, I was a dope and didn't pay enough attention when I purchased them, and then I failed to test'em.? [We don't need no stinking test'en here!!] So the switch and fan combination worked the exact opposite way I wanted. Perfectly wrong. On the other hand, they quickly failed. So I guess we are even. At the risk of further humiliation, would you pass me a link to the correct thermal switch?? I will endeavor to not spectacularly screw up the second go-round. Don km4udx |

Steve, plastic might be more brittle than metal, so try out the knibbling on a scrap piece first.

So the answer is yes, you can update a v5 to have a v6 style display. No need to swap out the entire Raduino, just the display itself. Then burn the v6 firmware into the Nano. I believe the Raduino board has not changed since first introduced for the Bitx40, except that now a socket is used on the Nano to make it easier to replace. The old 2x16 display just plugs in, hopefully the new display can plug into that same old connector?with no soldering necessary. In the past, it has been possible to buy a Raduino separately from hfsignals for about $30. I don't see that as an option on hfsignals.com now, the only items to buy are the complete v6 uBitx and the Antuino. But if the display is easy to swap out, and the Nano is socketed and thus easy to replace if it fails, that covers most of why you would want a new Raduino.? About the only other stuff on the Raduino is connectors, LM7805 regulator, and the si5351. If you really do need a new Raduino there have been third parties posting to the forum offering their own version for sale,?some of them with significant enhancements. It's on me, not you. I let them be very friendly with each other...I figured they like to work together.? I decided to bolt direct with no insulator, and take all the risks of shorting to the cabinet case, probes, random wires, and problematic fans,? and the like. The gain is a fraction more efficient energy transfer. (meaning I couldn't find the insulators.) But clearly the cost/benefit ratio is not in my favor. I'll ry to find them put them in next time I want to get silicon grease all over my fingers. hahaha. Don |

I am glad that Ashhar Farhan has indicated that all shipped V6 full kit units will have fully tested and compiled operational firmware when shipped, that makes me a happy camper as I want to finish the construction and operate the unit as designed by Ashhar and the team ?
.Yes I understand that many other individuals want to see if their addons will work with the new "official" code V6 and to possibility get AF to modify to make it complaint to their addons.I have been a silent supporter of Ashhar's vision and mission of design and local work inclusion from the start and I am sure that many in the Florida region have many of his products, in my previous area in Florida the BIT40 was a "Gift" to any ham that upgraded to General or above as where the Bofangs when they got their Technician. I went through that process with the original? BIT40 way back, when it was fun kicking of a $50 radio and as well even with the "WireShark".scenario. Things have chanced and so has the radio world and I am hoping of not reliving the past. One only to have a look at the dropping price of the China built "digital radio" clones? to see that the worlds may eventually meet at least in price if one has to keep attaching addons. There is no problem with the firmware on the shipped units. They wouldn't work at all if the firmware didnt compile. A bracket was missing on the uploaded firmware as the person cleaned up a commented line under the if statement before uploading the source code. You don't have to load or tune up the radios and they work out of the box. I understand that rick had a problem with a badly crimped connector. It would be impossible for us to test all the individual components. We test the displays, arduinos, all coils and crystals before the board is assembled. After assembly, we set the PLL calibration, the bfo, the pa bias, we test ssb and cw on 80, 40, 20 and 10 meters. And after you all made me feel very inadequate (not really, that is my wife's job) about my lack of "real" test gear, here is a picture of my very good technical guru Dan (W3BU) Techtronics scope, right next to my uBITX.? Dan gave me the scope (thank you Dan!!).? I didn't get to use it on this go round, but I'll learn how to turn it on soon. So I can be ready for the next stupid thing up my sleeve...hahah.?
Note the wood flap over the uBITX.? That is the underside of my AtomicPi single board computer -- now integrated with a USB hub into? the uBITX. Death to laptops!? My uBITX has a fully functional unix (Lubuntu) little Pi type embedded computer.? It is totally self contained for all digital modes, and I can do my email and waste time, as well.? I nominate you the next script writer for Star Wars. From your pic of IRFs - keep each heat sink from touching the other. If they touch you will not have fireworks but simply NO OUTPUT power! They look dangerously close! Probably they were touching! I recommend a larger single heat sink and insulation washers and mica or rubber for IRFs, then no need for fans. I tested the TP7->TP8 for continuity, checked r97/r98, examined the "functional integrity" of the RV2 & RV3 (I looked at them with a serious expression), did the bias setting process about 5 times just to prove that I could get +100ma consistently on each 510, and set the drive pot to produce 10w on 12v on 80m.? Then I tested and tested into my dummy load. I had RF power. YEA!!? With success at hand, I immediately took out the functioning ebay 510s, and replaced them with the real deal Mouser IRF510s. Did it matter? Well, no. But it made me feel better?? And I then did all the checking/bias setting over again. I still had RF power, even with the new new 510s.? [I got 10...just saying] Then I moved up to +15V on the brown wire. I got more power. Then +20V.? And I got even more power. I was mad with power! How much power you ask? 30W on 80m. And the spectral purity is only sort of marginal. hahaha.? I keep it below 30w...mostly...I try to keep it down...really I do...but sometimes...I ...just...can't...help...myself....ahhhhh. I felt like Dr. Frankenstein..."it lives!!!" The hormonally excessive large heat sinks got thermal switches to drive fans. The case got cut to hold the fans. Power was supplied to the fans. I was ready to conquer the world! Except the fans didn't really work.? The thermal switches were "on" all the time, the fans even with soft mounts made a racket, and the stupid fans would clog every time I hit TX.? And then they died. Maybe cause I paid $1.99 per fan? So I need to redo all the fan business.?? And I didn't think to test the thermal switches ahead of time. Normally open? Normally closed? hun? what? Such an idiot. But, back to the gorgeous heaven sent RF of life. The results?? WSPRnet says I am getting out to the world! It lives!! So with the awesome power comes awesome responsibility. And the PC crashes on 30m where the antenna SWR is a bit "sub optimal" aka near infinite. So I'm adding ferrite beads everyplace, improving grounding, and finally turning down the drive on 30m. Still with me? Well thank you all so very much. I owe ya. If I were more in touch with inner myself (which actually sounds a bit repulsive, when you think about it), I'd say I love ya, but really, that sounds a bit much. Don km4udx |
