Re: #bitx40 #firmware #firmware #bitx40

Ion,

Do you see "loading standard settings..." on the display each time you
power on the radio?
If so, it means that for some reason your Raduino restores the "factory"
settings each time at power on.
This should normally only happen
- after a version update
- when the Function Button is held pressed during power on
- when the CAL wire is shorted to ground during power on

Re: Raduino fix leads to no receive uBitx #radiuno #ubitx

Hi Ludwig,
Surprised of no replies on this, so I'll throw out a few ideas to stir up the conversation.
From your description, it seems to be an issue with the I2C/SI5351.

1. I?doubt there is a software bug with KD8CEC v 1.080 that is the reason for your issue.? But, I recommend you use the same firmware you used before the 'incident' to remove this as a variable.
2. With a SI5351 sourced from Ebay, the questionability of the part is of course raised.? There are part variants.?(some may not be intended for general market release)? Could you share the part number from the actual unit you installed??
Based on the data sheet I believe Silicon Labs ships parts that are factory programmed?to allow the part to generate 'clks' at power-up (without a I2C connection required)
3. It is not a trivial?solder rework to replace the SI5351.? Not to question your skills, but are all the leads properly soldered, with no opens/ shorts?
You have measured signals on CLK0-2, but there could be an issue with SDA,SCL.
4. Since you have a scope :), you can look at the SDA,SCL signals?at the pull-up resistors and at the SI5351 leads.
5. SI5351 supports 2 IC2 addresses, in this package the LSB is hard wired.??The addr?should be 0x60, but there could be a slight chance the ebay one is 0x61
This can be changed in the firmware #define SI5351BX_ADDR 0x60? -> SI5351BX_ADDR 0x61? (simple and fast to give it a try)

There are many solutions to get?a microprocessor and SI5351 combination working again in your uBITX, so no need to worry.
You should also feel comfortable sharing the details of the incident with this group so we can better understand how the SI5351 and Arduino became Non Functional as it applies to getting your uBITX functional.
I am inferring for now that you only have an issue with the Radiuno board.

Gary

Re: NEXTION DISPLAY UPDATES For KD8CEC ver 1.094 up

Thanks Mark, haven't measured anything yet....if the Nextion on a
Sunil case proves unworkable, well, will just have to leave v1 uBitx
in the case and buy a shiny new v4 for the Nextion version, with a
homemade enclosure. And why not, I may ask! - Rich

like it might just barely fit...I measured the height of the display as
about 43mm and the distance from the top edge of the front panel to the
top of the jack labels is about 48mm. The 3.2" display is about 47mm
high. Looks like either might fit but it would be close, if you don;t
want to cover up the labels. A bezel would add some to the size of the
display.

I have a second uBitX waiting to be assembled. I think I'll leave the
first one in Sunil's case with the 16x2 display (altho I swapped it for
white-on-blue version that I like better) and build the second one into
another case that I can set up the way I like it.

Also, I believe that Sunil is planning to offer cases cut for some of
the Nextion displays but I don't know how far along he is with that.
Maybe he'll chime in here with more info.

Anyway, just some info that may be of use.

(We might want to start a new thread about this.)

the front of the case, covering the hole in it that was meant for the

Re: NEXTION DISPLAY UPDATES For KD8CEC ver 1.094 up

I enlarged the window of one of my earlier uBITX rigs (that had been installed in a Circuit Specialists extruded aluminum case) to fit the 3.2 inch Enhanced Nextion. Originally I had used a 4 line by 20 character I2C LCD display and I was able to make the Nextion fit in that case by seriously enlarging the opening.? It isn't as neat as if I would have been able to start with a blank panel, but I have a Bezel on order (should be here today) that I hope will cover most of the old screw holes and then I can re-label the jacks & controls.

I got complacent when I wired it originally and was off on the blue "TX" wire from the display to Raduino display socket by 1 pin.? I had the Nextion's TX going to pin 5 (ground) rather than pin 4 (RST) and it displayed everything just fine but would not (of course) command the rig.? Once I got my head removed from a dark place and wired it correctly (LOL) it now works really well.?

I had to go back and re-read Ian's info on the Manager program and do some configuring (still more to do, but I'm on the road now) to get it running smoothly.? Hopefully the new Bezel will help me make it look as nice as the original did with the 4 X 20 display with it's original bezel.? The color Nextion will definitely spiff it up quite a bit with a cleaned up front panel.? Here's a couple pix of the work in progress. Even with the old, vacated holes in the panel it still doesn't look too bad.

Re: CEC firmware with RadI2Cino board? #ubitx #firmware #radiuno

Jeff,
We haven't had the time to attempt getting CEC software to work on the RadI2Cino.? It's different in hardware than the original Raduino enough that We'd have to re-work a lot of Ian's CEC code to make it work and we'd rather not modify his code as that would make US responsible for maintaining updates to it and also, it would eventually cause it to diverge from Ian's original code to the point it would not even resemble the good work that Ian has done.? We don't want to have that happen.?

If Ian wants to write code that will work on the RadI2Cino, all he has to do is email me (w0eb (at) cox dot net) and I'll gladly send him at no charge, a wired and tested RadI2Cino board so that he will have something to use as a test for his code.

That's all I can really do at this time.? That offer has been extended before (a long time ago) but Ian has never responded.? The offer remains open.

Re: Lousy Band Conditions #ubitx

Doug,

We are experiencing a solar storm right now and band conditions are bad but not completely gone. Yesterday I threw a cheapo 10 meter rig in my car and a Mag mount on the roof and worked a special event station at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at NASA in the LA area of southern California on 28.400 while on my way to Dr's appointment. About two hours later I could still hear the guy calling CQ, This on a paltry 7 watts out. When I got home I checked into the Noon Time Net on 7.285.5 on the west coast of the US on 5 watts, got a 57 signal report. Even later in the day I checked into the Maritime net on 14.300 using my FT-817ND running 5 watts, and last night I checked into the YL System net on 7.245 using my uBitx and a EFHW antenna laying on top of my roof. So, while the band does indeed suck it's not impossible to make contacts. Just keep trying, it will get better. BTW, I strictly run QRP.

Having the si5351 on the main board is particularly nice because it keeps the RF traces shorter.? The Arduino on the mother board makes less sense since everyone seems to be modifying that part of the radio as their first step. I like the whole concept though¡

Peter,

That is a very nice layout. I'm torn though because I really like the ease of soldering SMD parts, it is much faster, however I like having the si5351 and Arduino onboard. This would make a nice uBitx with a Nextion display.

Lately I've been working mostly digital on 30m and 20m with a little 17m and 15m sprinkled in for variety because I can do that and work my day job.? While all the bands do seem worse than a month or so ago they are far from dead.

Looks interesting.

Lousy Band Conditions #ubitx

I had luck enough to make a couple of contacts last weekend, but since then the bands seem to have dug a hole, crawled in, and pulled the hole in behind them. I can't hear *anything* out there except for a few squeals of heterodyne and a lot of hash. Even if my antenna was a two-foot piece of rebar, I'd expect to at least HEAR things even if I couldn't get out more than a block, but I'm not hearing diddly.

So my question is, did I blow out the front end or something? I checked the band conditions and last night they were practically zero across the board. I think 30 had a "4" or something, but the rest were flat at the bottom. I suppose the website could be broken, too, so I'm still going to ask if anyone else has been hearing anything worth mentioning, or have I built a wonderful radio and some nice antennage just in time for the bands to die like a squirrel on a six-lane highway?

Never fails. If I buy a raffle ticket, the Monsignor wins the Cadillac.

Actually, once you fix the broken line, the code should work. However, let's make sure the Nano is getting the compiled code. Try this:

Load the Arduino IDE
Plug the USB connector into the Nano
Check to make sure the Arduino Nano is selected (Tools --> Board)
Check to make sure a COM port is assigned to the Nano (Tools --> Port)
??? These last 2 steps must be set to go any further
Load the Blink program (File --> Examples -->01.Basics --> Blink)
Compile/upload Blink sketch

If you can do this and the Nano red LED blinks in a 1 second rhythm, you know your Nano is good. Assuming that all is well, then try:

Load the LCD Hello World program (File --> Examples --> LiquidCrystal --> Hello World). Note that this program may be pretty far down the list.
Compile/upload the Hello World sketch.

If this works, then I don't know why the Bitx code doesn't work. If this does not work, then start looking for some kind of wiring/connection error between the Bitx board and the Raduino board.

Elmar,
None of us were born knowing how to do this.? I will try to explain with more detail to see if we can get you through this.? Let us first see if your computer is recognizing the nano.? This will help determine if you have the correct driver.

First go to your device manager.? In Windows 7 go to control panel, then systems and security, and finally device manager.? Most likely you will have one of the two situations described below.

Find a heading labeled Ports (COM & LPT).? Do you see Arduino Nano listed?? If so, write down the port number shown after it.
If you did find the Nano in that section you have the driver.? Now go to the Arduino IDE (the program you installed to compile and load sketches) and check the following under the Tools tab at the top:? For board make sure it shows Arduino Nano, select it from the list by clicking the arrow.? For port make sure it shows the port number you found in your device manager.? Once you have the board and port selected you should be able to upload the sketch.

If in your device manager the Nano does not show up under ports it is probably under Other Devices.? If that is the case you do need to install the driver.? That is also a relatively easy step but that will be for another post if you need it.

Let us know what you find.
