Re: uBITX AGC - Adafruit TPA2016, A Success! #ubitx

Hi Nik,
I have two questions for you in regards to using the TPA2016 module.? First question is are you taking the audio input to the module directly from the volume pot wiper? That was my take on an earlier post you made.? I have two modules and both behave the same.? One module I connected as just a stock amplifier, with no connections to the I2C bus, and the audio output is extremely low.? In order to hear a 50uV 1KHz signal I have to turn the volume control to maximum.? The second module I have configured with the I2C connections to the Arduino Nano and have the Vcc line for the I2C connected to the 3.3V port.? The Vdd line is connected to 5V.? I have the same results - extremely low audio.? I'm using the left channel for input and output.? My speaker is not grounded in either case.?

The second question is more of a request.? Would you post your modified Adafruit library files in the File section here on Groups IO?? I thought I had your library modifications figured out but now I'm not completely certain.? Before I start chasing my tail in the wrong direction I'd like to know that at least the files I've modified and am using are not part of the problem.

Thanks for your work, I certainly appreciate it.

Thanks Mvs Sarma.

There is no change at 12V.

Does the?TDA2822?normally get hot??

I have some spare LM386s here, but I have not looked to see if they are directly swappable. (I have never used a?TDA2822?before) .

Thanks

Re: Distorted RX audio at higher volumes #ubitx-help

Also limit the power supply to 12V while testing the audio in RX.

Re: Debouncing rotary encoder

All

Denouncing and pullups are also possible in the firmware. This is the method I use in the QRP Labs kits like QCX - look at the schematic: no pull-ups, no RC-debounce. Saves 6 components (4 resistors, 2 capacitors). It's not important in a one-off build or modification but in a kit where you are trying to optimise cost every resistor helps! The firmware method also gives you more control over how you do your debounce. I prefer the state-machine approach to rotary encoder handling, it implicitly debounces without involving any time constants.

Digital attenuation

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I was interested in Karl K0MWC's suggestion to use a PE digital attenuation chip to address the problem of variable power out on the ?BITx.? (Refer: /g/BITX20/message/42298).?? I was not so thrilled to note that this chip is only available as a "microscopic surface mount" package.

So, I did a bit of searching online and found an alternative device (less precision but we can live with 1dB steps) that is available as a pre-built module (using an HMC470 chip) for around US$13 ex China. This seems quite a nice little module that could be used as follows:

On TX:? control drive level to the pre-driver stage

On RX: as an RF gain control (selectable in the menu and using the encoder to control 32 steps from 0dB to 31dB of attenuation)?

AND

??? ??? ??? as part of an AGC circuit to reduce gain for strong signals.

I have summarized the discussion of all the options for addressing variable output power from the ?BITx in a news article on ubitx.net here:

I ordered a couple of the modules, and I will tell you the outcome of my experiments in 2-3 months time.? It takes a while for parcels to arrive from China down here.?? Somebody else might beat me to it hopefully (like they did with the little mic compressor/noise gate chip) and can let us know how this scheme works!

BTW - if you use two modules in series you can get 62dB of attenuation! That would be great for AGC control!

I kinda have to agree with Mike. I've bought a lot of stuff from them and it's usually here within a week and their prices are really good. I do know they have a distribution facility in Livingston, CO, which is why most of their stuff arrives quickly. You may have ordered an item which was out of stock, which they fly in from Thailand (I think ?).
