Re: Probing the Bitx40 transmit chain

I think just setting it in the middle at the factory with the expectation the customer will adjust it with other settings during setup is fine. But it was not communicated that way, and I thought that particular setting was meant to be that way for a reason. If it had been included to complete the setup process if needed, I would have had no problem with it's performance at all. Except for the calibration wire thing. I believe communication in the instructions was the only problem. In a way, this was a worse experience for me than trying to make a kit with instructions that were translated from chinese with a program, instead of a person. Because I trusted the english, and experience of this source.

Re: Wiki Fu

James, great to have Raduino in the Wiki! The Structure looks really like you thougth a lot about it.

The Wiki here needs no Fu at all. Everything done with just a few buttons clicks in the Edit Mode, no special syntax or code necessary. For Sructure use the second button from the left, the magic wand. I'm very positive everyone can manage that.

Please give it a try. It's not so important to have it perfect at the first try. Just start by writing, then do the formating, save often to have points to start of again.

If you still have problems please report back here so that we all can learn and identify the stumbling blocks.

I am also waiting for my Bitx40 to arrive...and I understand I may
have to give it a shakedown cruise. The good folks doing this in
India have been hit by a MASSIVE demand, happily brought on by the
Bitx40 features in both the Hamnation and AmateurLogic video casts,

this may make Ashar and his coworkers rich, they are also probably

I have no idea how my being conserned with the out of the box usability became any kind of comment on who made the thing. I don't give a rats rump who made it. Whoever they are good for them. I just want some idea that I'm not buying a box of bits that I need to fiddle with endlessly to make work.

Keep the politics for the dinner table and let's get to himbrewing this bad boy!

Re: Volume, on/off switch

Hi Michael!

The small pot is for volume and it is the one that has the power switch on it.

If that is the one you want to replace buy a logarithmic pot not a linear one. It should be 10K as per LM386 data sheet..

For easier tuning you can use a multi turn linear pot.

You can use anything between 5K and 50K. It will not give you a better resolution (same 100 Hz step) but it will not be so sensitive to touch.

Re: Probing the Bitx40 transmit chain

There's at least 100 ways the transmit chain might fail or be less than it should, and I found a new one. ? Even when there is some other problem, if increasing the gain at R136 compensates for it without causing distortion to the signal, that's perfectly fine with me. ? My assumption had been that these units get tested before shipping from hfsigs for proper bias and power setting. ?Perhaps that's not the case, they simply set R136 to mid-range, and we should set R136 for correct output with the IRF510 we happen to have stuffed. ?IRF510 characteristics can vary considerably. ? ? ? My opinion? ?All's well that ends well.

I bought the BITX40 because I wanted an inexpensive QRP rig that supported SSB, yet looked like it could be easily hacked if I wanted to do that. The fact that it helped support some women in India is just some icing on the cake.

I hope we can just accept that fact and put this topic to rest.

Do you understand those "willing workers" are Women? And in some parts of India Women make up 57% less than Men for the same jobs. In the U.S. Women make up to 20% less for the same job. Be cautious when someone points out something as being special. They're exploiting you or someone else, or both. It's great they are being given a livelihood. But at what cost to them? Even just marketing?a product as made by Women exploits the Women, and the buyer who wants to support women.

That is not a taxation theory. If you want to blend politics, tax policy, and economics, read Charles Beard's An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution. He provides a much more compelling explanation than Holmes does of why citizens of a country should pay taxes. Regardless, I'll bet both Holmes and Beard would support charging an access fee to the web site.
