Re: binocular cores - to twist or not to twist!

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Has anybody tried phone cable, stripping off the white outer and then using
2 or 3 of the coloured inner wires, twisted of course, for winding the
toroids?

Re: binocular cores - to twist or not to twist!

Is the ribbon cable that stranded wire or solid??? And if stranded, does it make a difference in toroid s??? I've never used stranded in making them and have never heard if it makes a difference.... Seems like ribbon cable might be easier to wind...

Ahem! elaborating for Sandeep..

Twisted pairs have lesser capacitance with the next turn or layer than untwisted pairs of wires AFAIK!
Twisted pairs in balanced configuration also reduces the stray signal pickup from nearby circuits/radiators.

The wire gauge for the broadband transformers is not very specific. If
you can get those many turns through the toroid/binocular former, you
are ok. As they are broadband in nature, they will also be broadly
tolerant of wire size etc. As long as it is not so thin that the
current passing through will melt it!

The value of rf band pass and power amp's low pass filters is given in
the original circuit.

I have been able to find insulated copper wire at stores that sell fly fishing gear. And at craft stores that sell the things to make beaded jewelry. Don't know how good it is but they have it in all the colors of the rainbow.

Re: Alternative To BB204 Varicap In IK3OIL FLL?

The 30volt device may also be found in the old cable boxes, most of
those I tore up were 30 volt tuning. Also most were positive ground
power supplies.

Quoting arv :

Rob

The BB204 dual varicap is a 30 volt device. Capacitance is 14 pf with a
2.6 voltage to capacitance ratio.

<
>

The BB204B has slightly higher capacitance, 47 pf versus 39 pf, than the
BB204G.

These devices were designed for electronic tuning of FM radio
receivers. That may
give you some idea where to look for surplus and salvage units.

Alas, it is only for U.S. customers.

This was (is) originally flat "rainbow" IDE cable. It is now called "Dupont" cable on e-bay. I saw one offer of 1m. of 40-conductor cable for $US3.50. It is probably 28 gauge.

Any of the original IDE-33, IDE-66, or floppy drive cables can be salvaged for use, though most of them are a drab grey. The ATA-66 cables are a little different in that they have a parallel ground wire for each signal wire, and so are quite a bit finer gauge.

There is also some earlier flat cable that had periodic crossed wires in them that were used to interface early (1960's) computers with industrial processing machines. The crossed wires are to cancel some interference. You might come across that now and then. If you do, get it. It is a very rugged and well-defined cable.

There are several listed on eBay for worldwide delivery. Here's one:

Here's another source that offers worldwide shipping.

Also, here's the datasheet for the BB204 series. It will show key
characteristics you can compare with other devices. Key characteristics
include the voltage ratio and the voltage-to-capacitance curve. You know,
now that I think of it, two single varactors (closely matched with the
right characteristics) ought to work cathode to cathode.

There's no doubt lots of other sources can be found a'Googlin'. These are
just a few.

PA on a different frequency

jerryk5lru

I got the exciter working great. I moved on to the PA. I'm using the Mod of Farhan to increase the power to 15 watts. This adds an inductor and two capacitors to form a pi network on the gate of the IRF510. I followed directions and wound a 13 turn toroid on a 37-6 core and used the right capacitors. I have about 17 watts output but not on the right frequency. The exciter's VFO is at 14,300 but the output frequency into my dummy load is at 14,550.
When I checked the exciter on my big rig it was right on freq, but when I checked the PA it was up at 14'550. What did I do wrong?
