Re: sBITX with FreeDV

It's not too difficult to install. You just clone the codec2 repo and make the release in very much the same as building the sBitx the radio software.?
the only extra step is to drop the freedv_ptt file into the correct folder, but it should probably be reconfigured to point to the codec files no matter where you plop the executable.?
I'm still just happy it works, maybe it will be refined soon.. But yeah, Things are getting better every day.

Congrats!

I can't wait to try it.

Was it hard to install?

How did it sound?

It looks like this radio is getting better everyday!

Re: A solution to the noisy hot 5V buck regulator

I just did this modification with the DROK regulator.

I bought:

Drok Regulator

and?

Dupont Connector Kit

I also bought a Dupont Connector crimper kit but I forgot how hard it was to actually make good Dupont connectors.? Cutting the already made connectors and soldering them made much more sense for me.

The input Black GND I cut down to about one inch and folded up and covered with heat shrink; leaving just enough lead in case I changed my mind about the way I wired it.

I cut the little premade cables in half keeping just male pins.? Then I stripped the ends of everything.

I did Western Union twists remembering to put the heatshrink on before the solder.

You will want to try pushing at least one of these pins in from the back side to see how they click in before you use your actual soldered wires.? It is possible to put them in the wrong way.? Also, I did try just crimping on pins to the wires from the regulator without all of the soldering but that didn't work well because the regulator wires are actually to big for the back of the connector.

Here the pins are pushed in and I used a gold marker to mark what is the empty pin one.? "Pin One" goes toward the big capacitor.

I used a lot of double sided Gorilla tape for adhesive because that's all I had.? I would have preferred the 3m double sided stick foam.

I installed it just to the left of the speaker on the upper part of the back half of the case.

Although I don't have a picture of it.? I crammed a unused pin into the female side of the Dupont connector on "Pin one" on the mother board to "Idiot Proof" it so somebody couldn't install the connector backwards.

I powered it on a tried it out before I put everything back together and it worked!

Re: sBITX with FreeDV

That worked out really well!
Thanks for the QSO JJ and more importantly for trying it out.

Well Jon and I just had our first QSO using FreeDV on HF. I was using the sBitx with about 10 watts p2p.

Pretty cool.

Re: sBITX with FreeDV

There is activity all over but the main calling freqs are found around the listed watering holes.
You can also check the site for more info about the project. I was thinking for a portable radio it would be nice to have it incorporated.
I do hear some activity on 14.236 I need to change antennas

80 meters:?3.625, 3.643, 3.693, or 3.697 MHz
60 meters:?5.4035 MHz or 5.3665 MHz (in countries where allowed)
40 meters:?7.177 MHz and 7.190 MHz
20 meters:?14.236 MHz and 14.240 MHz
17 meters:?18.118 MHz?

Re: sBITX with FreeDV

I answered my own question...

Re: sBITX with FreeDV

Cool. What frequencies usually have activity? I will download and test it. Thanks for making this.

You're welcome, Pete. This Pi issue annoyed me beyond frustration and I was determined to figure out why it broke. I felt a sense of personal responsibility since many people are using my 64 bit image now.

Re: After Bookworm 64 bit upgrade, the DSI monitor flickers #Raspberry4B #sBITX_v3

Well it turns out the Raspberry Pi realize their mistake and automatically held back the kernel packages in the update process without my intervention now..

I reflashed the beta2 image and ran an update/upgrade and received this..

The following packages have been kept back:
? linux-headers-rpi-2712 linux-headers-rpi-v8 linux-image-rpi-2712
? linux-image-rpi-v8
?

Hmmm..

New sBitx V3 3D printed wedge feet

Someone posted an image that had some similar feet but I could never find them published on any of the normal sites.? So I created something similar.?

These set the screen back at 30 degrees and are quite stable.? They also nest nicely for packing.??

Re: 4gb vs 8gb ?

I noted that the 2 GB RPi would use swap space when an external HDMI monitor is used in addition to the 7" touch screen.? This was as reported using htop.? This did not happen when I switched to the 4 GB RPi.? To me, this indicates a performance improvement, as the system does not have to spend time doing external memory management.? I did not see a similar issue with the 4 GB RPi, even when running third-party applications.? Both of these were with the 32-bit version of sbitx.

I had an 8 GB RPi in my DE that I swapped out for a 4 GB.? I did not see a performance hit with the change.

@JJ - I originally bought an 8gb pi when I first ordered my sbitx.? Just after I ordered my pi, the sBitx got updated from v2 to v3, so I didn't have a need for the 8gb pi as the v3 came with one installed.? I have purchased the low noise 5v power supply talked about in other conversations so I had planned to change out the supply and the pi at the same time.? I've been holding off a bit as I wanted the 64bit project to be a bit more stable before I committed to that.? So as soon as the next update to the 64bit version goes up, I'll pop in the 8gb and let you know how it goes.? But I'm not really sure that there's a way to quantify the performance inprovement (if any).? If there's any thoughts there let me know so I can test the current baseline.

The great Pi shortage resulted in 8GB models to be astronomically priced at the time. I wasn't able to find one for a normal price or in stock.. I'd like to see if someone is using an 8GB Pi and report it's performance.

HV is a label on the schematic. It is the output of the voltage doubler used to reverse bias the PIN diodes in the LPF and T/R switches. HV stands for High Voltage.

Hi Jens,

Two things come to mind, both around the LPF selection circuits.
1 - There is diode failure such that only one LPF is selected
2 - The HV generating circuit has a failure like Gordon Gibby had.

First, verify the proper operation of the LPF selection changing frequency in receive mode. Then, verify that the correct filter is selected.

If receiving works, verify that the HV voltage is higher than the peak voltage of the output. For 40 watts into 50 ohms, Vpeak = Squartroot(2*50*power) = 63.4 volts.

Be sure to do all tests with a dummy load connected.

Running with a non-RPi device in an sBitx introduces an additional variable if/when you have problems with the radio.

We are not (yet) at the point where we can drop an RPi 5 in an sBitx, there are OS differences and thermal differences as well. These issues will likely be overcome soon, but I don't think we're there yet.

If contemplating upgrading an sBitx that already has an RPi 4 2 gig in it, you may benefit from an upgrade to a 4 gig RPi 4, but if you're going to swap out the current RPi 2 gig, I'd encourage you to invest another $20 and upgrade to an 8 Gig RPi 4, assuming the $20 price difference isn't an issue for you (but if you're price-sensitive, why are you upgrading?).

Back during and after Covid for a while it was hard to find an RPi for reasonable prices, now the market has normalized, and my local retailer has RPi 4 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gig models as well as RPi 5 4 and 8 Gig models in stock at list prices (Microcenter, specifically their Dallas store), so I'm hard-pressed to justify upgrading to anything other than 8 Gog RPi 4 if you plan to upgrade.

Something made you consider upgrading the RPi 4 in your radio, what was the motivation, and would more memory help address the issue? In my opinion the cost isn't an issue, assuming you can find a use for the removed RPi 4 2 Gig...
