Re: sBITX V3 Display and Enclosure Considerations

If I may suggest, occasionally read the conversations in the other topic. Why am I saying that?
Because it was discussed a few days ago that the laptop has a monitor output, meaning you can connect an external monitor to it.
But you can't use your laptop's monitor as an external monitor because it doesn't have a video input (it only has an output).

There are descriptions on the net that they use an adapter with hdmi input and usb output.
You can also see comparison pictures of it, where it turns out that this is not a good solution.

So using the laptop and VNC can be a good solution.
Or you can use an external hdmi monitor connected to the output of the RPi, even two if there is no dsi screen.

Aaron - since you have the old laptop display and you say the original Pi display is small, I would go with that route unless somebody has a better reason not to.? Mine is a V2 in its original enclosure, but I will be running V3.01 software to start.? Another ham had to give up the hobby for medical reasons and sold off about $1375.00 worth of equipment.? I took almost half of it (sBIT and accessories, and a dual trace 150 Mhz. o'scope/signal generator).? He had an 8Gb. Pi installed.? WK4DS had some ready-to-go uSD versions for sale & I took a set.? All of my operating will be done portable as I can't get an antenna up at my apartment.? I'm waiting for some better weather to take my medical scooter out.? I had to hang the car keys up over 4 years ago - lost my license over age-related medical issues.? Since you say you are using the toolkit, does it just install like a normal program, or do you have to compile from source code?

Incidentally, "Winterpeg"isn't living up to its name.? There was a joke making the rounds recently that someone was going to file a missing season report with the police.? There has been no skating on the rivers this winter - ice is too thin.? The snowmobilers and skiers and the businesses that serve them are crying in their beer.

Version 1`:
This will use the 7" RPI display so it will be basically a full kit version of the V3 but with a homemade enclosure instead of the nice one from HF Signals. Version 2:
Same as version 1 but build it with my 15 inch laptop display instead of the RPI display. I will lose the touch screen option but I don't ever use that anyway. It will not be as efficient or portable but it will still fit on my trike and I can see the display easier. I have thought of making a screen protector that will protect the display while in transport and it can be used as a sun screen while operating outside.?

Version 3:
This is the simplest design. Make it with no onboard display at all and just connect what ever external display that I have given the situation.?

Personally I like version 1 and being able to use a external display would be great.?

Let me know what you think or if you have any ideas of your own. If you could please post pics of what you are using for a enclosure.?

Re: Calibration Lost after power cycle KD8CEC v1.8

VU3HZW,

I do not know where the v1.8 comes from.? The last KD8CEC version is 1.2.? The compiled hex code is here:

Where did you get v1.8?

Mark's GitHub has a memory manager replacement that works on other PC OSes.? You could try that.?

Another possibility is to use the "yellow text box" part of the Nextion/KD8CEC software to edit settings.? You get to it by holding in the encoder until a 16x2 yellow box mimics the original uBitx 16x2 character display.? It requires more steps to turn on the calibration sub-menu, then adjust and finish with a brief PTT click.?

Re: Calibration Lost after power cycle KD8CEC v1.8

Hello Evan!

Firstly thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

You answer help me to understand the importance of uBitx Manager for EEPROM update. I don't have any windows laptop at the moment. All linux distros don't work with uBitx Manager ( now that's a different story).? I will get a Windows system.

Current code is a direct hex from KD8CEC v1.8

Yes, I am currently trimming Mark's code to fit in the tiny nano.

?

This is want I have understood. v1.8 KD8CEC stock don't update EEPROM. Am I right when I say this?

Evan, the line numbers I gave were wrong - I was looking at the wrong version ...

I'm ok with either testing for hardware version, or just assignment of the the version. Once that is done, the tr_switch function at line 1226 should do othe right thinig.

But down at line 1400 and 1402 dont't we call tr_switch_v2 and clatter the relays no matter what hardware we have? Those are the lines I change to tr_switch ...

Re: Sbitx rig control from laptop?

Mike,

The line numbers you listed do not match the 3.02 sbitx.c program.? What are the changes that you are making?

Here is a copy of the comment that I made on the DE vs V2 detection process:

Using the i2c read to identify the sbitx version is not a good idea.? There are DE mods to add the SWR/Power sensor that would fail this test and assign V2 to a DE relay machine.? I suggest removing the test in the settings function and only using the assignment of sbitx_version.

Remove:
//detect the version of sbitx
uint8_t response[4];
if(i2cbb_read_i2c_block_data(0x8, 0, 4, response) == -1)
sbitx_version = SBITX_DE;
else
sbitx_version = SBITX_V2;

Since there are fewer DE sbitx, include a note to change the assignment DE:
int sbitx_version = SBITX_V2;
to
int sbitx_version = SBITX_DE;

And then ./build.

Re: Calibration Lost after power cycle KD8CEC v1.8

VU3HZW,

I am not able to get to my shack to verify the following.? This is from memory and what files I have on my kitchen laptop.

There are features of the KD8CEC software that can be selected when the sketch is compiled.? Two of these are related to the calibration process.? If they are not selected when the program is compiled and downloaded using the Arduino IDE, then the EEPROM data will not be updated.? ?The selections are in the ubitx.h folder.? Here is the list of the features from the folder:

//==============================================================================
// User Select feather list
//==============================================================================
/*
//Enable all features
#define FN_BAND? ? ? ? ?1 //592
#define FN_VFO_TOGGLE? ?1 //78
#define FN_MODE? ? ? ? ?1 //20
#define FN_RIT? ? ? ? ? 1 //58
#define FN_SPLIT? ? ? ? 1 //62
#define FN_IFSHIFT? ? ? 1 //238
#define FN_ATT? ? ? ? ? 1 //128
#define FN_CW_SPEED? ? ?1 //152
#define FN_VFOTOMEM? ? ?1 //254
#define FN_MEMTOVFO? ? ?1 //188
#define FN_MEMORYKEYER? 1 //156
#define FN_WSPR? ? ? ? ?1 //1044
#define FN_SDRMODE? ? ? 1 //68
#define FN_CALIBRATION? 1 //666
#define FN_CARRIER? ? ? 1 //382
#define FN_CWCARRIER? ? 1 //346
#define FN_CWTONE? ? ? ?1 //148
#define FN_CWDELAY? ? ? 1 //98
#define FN_TXCWDELAY? ? 1 //94
#define FN_KEYTYPE? ? ? 1 //168
#define FN_ADCMONITOR? ?1 //516
#define FN_TXONOFF? ? ? 1 //58
*/

The issue is that not all features can be loaded simultaneously.? There are two ways to get around the limitation:
1 - Change the features to include calibration and drop other features so that the program fits in the Nano
2 - Use the Windows PC-based Memory Manager to write the values to the EEPROM

The largest feature is WSPR, so removing that feature allows all other features to be loaded.? If you want WSPR capability, I would use the Memory Manager to save the calibration data to EEPROM.? Memory Manager is available here:

Mark AJ6CU has updated the KD8CEC Nano Program and developed a Memry Manger program to replace the originals from Dr. Lee.? Those efforts are on his GitHub site here:

Mark has put much effort into the KD8CEC/Nextion software, taking up where Dr. Lee left off.? I have since moved to the sbitx radios and have not worked with the uBitx besides some mods for friends.? Those have not included using Mark's software.

If you are happy with the screen and operation of the uBitx and you have a Windows PC, I would go with the Memory Manager from KD8CEC.? I believe there is a rudimentary manual on the KD8CEC blog.

I hope that the above helps.

  • Yes.
  • I press the PTT to save
  • Value 280000 ( Master Calibration is saved? ) - Zero Beat Menu Value - 30 or 32 (Both sounds good for me)
  • Power Cycle
  • Calibration Lost
  • Read the value from config menu - Reads 280000
  • Need to calibrate (Zero Beat) again to 30 or 32

Calibration Lost after power cycle KD8CEC v1.8

Issue: Calibration lost after power cycle
Firmware: KD8CEC v1.8 with Nextion 3.5 inch
Rig: uBitx v5
Steps to reproduce
  1. Go to *Set Calibration*
  2. Turn the encoder to zero beat? ( Value 30 works for me )
  3. Verify the audio quality.
  4. Master calibration is now set at 280000 (Config Menu Display)
  5. Restart/Power Cycle
  6. Observation: Calibration is lost, even though the master calibration value stores 280000 (Config File Menu Display)
I end up always zero beating before use ?

Thanks Jeff.

It appears that the json files are missing..

Here is how to create the json fille for the launcher in terminal..
cd sBITX-toolbox
touch launcher.json

If you want to create a blank sBITX Manager file, then also do this in terminal..
cd sBITX-Manager
touch sbmanager_config.json

Now run the toolbox launcher and/or memory manager and add some stuff. Close, then reopen.? See if this helps.

If that doesn't work, then maybe there is a permission issue in the folders.
