Re: uBITX Operator awards KO4CVU and others

Ashhar,
You are being too kind. I am using Fldigi version 4.1.23 running in Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi 3B. The Pi is the microprocessor part of the Nexus DR-X crosspatch that Budd Churchward, WB7FHC, kits and sells on his webpage at?. The package of software for it is maintained by Steve Magnuson,?AG7GN.?
And by the way, based on my own personal experience, I have come to the conclusion that "Howard's modification" made it possible to run digital on my version 6. I say that because I recently bought a second, but unmodified, v6. I tried to use my Nexus DR-X crosspatch with it but the output power was only about 1/10 watt. After completing "Howard's modification", I can get about 4 watts out on 20 meters and 40 meters. I had already completed "Howard's modification" on my first v6 before trying to go digital with it. That first unit will deliver 5 watts on 20 meters and about 10 watts on 40 meters. I am not smart enough to know why "Howard's modification" seems to enable the digital connection to work, I just lucked into the discovery. I also do not understand why the second v6 won't give me more power out on 40 watts, but QRP digital at 5 watts or less is my niche, so I am happy. My most recent power measurements have been with the Barb-A-Watt QRP HF Power / SWR monitor kitted and sold by Kees Talen, K5BCQ.
Thanks again for the kind words. If it wasn't for you and your uBITX, I wouldn't be enjoying the ham radio hobby today. Please keep up the great creative work!

Re: Here's the operating manual

One more tiny typo in the RTTY/PSK31 section:
on should be "or" I believe?

Thanks again,

Re: Here's the operating manual

Looks like you wanted to direct the users to read more about the unix "DATE" command somewhere, but never finished the sentence.

Great manual so far! Super excited for this radio!!! Thanks for all your hard work.

Re: Here's the operating manual

Fixed it. You can mail me directly with the subject "sbitx operating?manual"

Stephen,
My admiration knows no bounds considering that I spent a day trying to get two sbitx talk in bpsk31.
What software do you wield??

uBITX Operator awards KO4CVU and others

In addition to being a first rate operator in the 2022 VA QSO Party, Steven is a multi mode operator! My log shows Olivia, Contestia, PSK and the beloved FSKH105 (the finest visual digital mode Germany could invent after WWI).? When i talk to Steven via his uBITX, i feel like the luckiest kid on the block.?

Stephen is also a killer PSK operator.?

Stephen placed 6th in a "Three Day Weekend" PSK contest run by the fabulous? PSK-centric club

I am too humble to mention who placed 5th, but suffice?to say that was also a uBITX operator.

Don The Humble uBITXer.

No, we had some covid infections! We should ship very soon. The manual is all done, except for the rtty section and the intro.

The critical part is that sbitx is entirely open source. If you happen to have a raspberry pi with you, you can order a wm8731 card for 20 dollars and solder rest of it from ordinary transistors for less than 100 dollars.
There is nothing, hopefully, to prevent others from kitting, building this.
I hope for instance, that a raspberry pi zero, headless version emerges that can work with your smartphone.

$500 is understandable in today's tough climate, but maybe things will cool off and there will be a price cut in a year or two.? Comparing this to -- maybe a Yaesu FT-818ND -- there's no comparison, the sBitX completely obliterates the FT-818 already and is less expensive!? I'm hopeful that there will be less birdie issues and such with the sBitX.

Anyway, I'm no longer subscribed to e-mail digests here, but can't wait to see how things progress next time I check in -- exciting times in this community and at HF Signals! :-D

Re: uBitx V6, no reception. #v6 #ubitx6-help

Ashok,

It should not matter if you truly get it to zero beats.? One way to tell is to save the calibration value and then go back and set the radio for the calibration frequency and see if there is a difference in tone between the upper and lower sidband.? A perfectly calibrated radio will have no difference when receiving an AM signal.? ? AM has both upper and lower sidebands transmitted with the carrier.

I have now installed KD8CEC sw in the original Nano, and read out the data using ¡±MM¡±, and backed up that file.?

I now have reception, not as great as a websdr (that i found) but i should test with a better antenna l8r.

Many thanks fot Your help!?

Anyone know if PI-3B would work with the sBITX until the prices come down on the PI-4's?

Re: uBitx V6, no reception. #v6 #ubitx6-help

Hi Evan,

Thanks for jumping in. Ok I will calibrate using the TCXO, but I have one question. During calibration, which side-band mode should I use, USB or LSB? In the video Farhan used LSB, but in know that LSB is used mostly 40m and below. For higher bands USB is used. Should I keep the radio in USB during calibration because the TCXO is at 20MHz. Please correct me if I am wrong on the side-band concept.

Ashok,

I would suggest that you follow the steps in Ashhar Farhan's video:

You can use the TXCO as the AM station to zero beats.? The critical step is the first one to adjust the BFO using the BFO Tuning tool that Ashhar Farhan has on the HHSignals pages:

My experience with many uBitx is that the BFO is the most critical setting for receiver sensitivity.??

To summarize what the video is telling you to do:
1 - Adjust the BFO so that it allows the low-frequency audio to come through
2 - Calibrate the master clock to align the dial to the correct frequency (the master clock is used in all of the oscillator settings so that the ratios will stay constant between them)
3 - After calibrating rig frequency, readjust the BFO for maximum signal in the normal SSB range of 300 to 3,000 Hertz.? I usually set this towards the 3,000 Hz line, which reduces the bleed-through carrier the most.? ?The tradeoff is the tinny sound.? Adjust for what you like.

uBITX Operator KO4CVU was a winner in the 2022 Virginia QSO Party UPDATE

I reported earlier that Stephen received email notification he won the "Digital Modes, Single Operator" section of the 2022 Virginia QSO Party.
The handsome wall plaque he received to confirm the win is certainly impressive.
I thought some of you fellow uBITX Ops might like to see it too.

BITX radios have put a new spark in my Ham Radio interests.
During last month's 2022 Field Day event, I worked 29 states in 7 hours operating a V3 from a combination of "Beech Fork State Park" and home locations.?

Please share "your" memorable BITX adventures with?the rest of us.
