Re: Ubitx V5 Low audio and No SSB #v5 #ubitx-help

Karan

Are you using the microphone cartridge that came with your uBITX V-5?
Several people have tried to use other microphones and experienced low?
audio level (low SSB output).? Some resolved the problem by enlarging?
the hole in the microphone housing to allow more audio to reach the?
electret cartridge. ?

Your 7.8 volts bias to the microphone seems about right. ?

I know this issue has been addressed many times, and I need some hardware, not theory to enjoy the fruits of my labor. My bench is a small desk with a VOM, and loads of hope to actually see what is necessary to work on electronic circuitry. No complaint with the audio output on the AM band, but gets dicey trying to listen to CW in the upper ether. Hearing is not all that good as before. Any ready built or kits that would beat the low audio output in the upper bands? Sure would appreciate it. Thank you. 73/KH2EE

uBITX Version 6 construction manual #ubitx #v6

Since there have been a few posts on people having occasional troubles assembling the V6 "Full Kit" and for some reason they don't seem to be able to find the instructions (plain sight) on HF Signals website, I took the time to write up a fairly comprehensive construction manual for the V6 and did this while actually assembling the last one I bought.

I took photos during the process and tried to show the major points to help keep people out of trouble doing what should be a really straight-forward build.? I sent the PDF file to Ashhar Farhan who liked it and asked if they could print and include it with every kit they sold.? I gave him that permission but then the COVID 19 Virus hit and everyone is locked down.

Here is the PDF of that manual for anyone that needs it and I'm also going to upload it to the Files section of this group.

It will also be available on the TSW website, in the files section under "documentation" to make it fairly easy to find.? The manual is NOT copyrighted and may be freely reproduced/distributed but if you do, please leave it intact and submit any suggested changes or improvements to me (the author/photographer) via email direct (w0eb at cox dot net).

Thanks and I hope this helps clarify the build of this pretty decent kit.? Also, for the information of all, I have NO affiliation with HF Signals whatsoever, and I purchase the uBITX kit(s) just like everyone else at the full price on the website.

Re: Help with my ubitx v6 kit

He did mention that it is the 'full kit'.? That being said, I'll bet it is the same problem that I had initially with my 'un-full' kit:? (I forget the terminology but) the wires from the control knob (as opposed to the on/off volume knob) plugged into the board rather than the arduino.? Just sayin'

Goodmorning..what kind of antenna do you use?? Are al the conectors on the board good and fitting???
Have you tryed the board without the case??(look out for shortcut) I have and also problems but most probems has been not fitting good connectors.

Re: Receive Noise with USB #cat

Hi Erwin
Thanks for your reply. You are correct... I did change the monitor and that reduced the
noise somewhat..
The real problem was that the PCB board that had the female USB-b socket mounted on
it did not ground the shield of the socket.
When I found that, I ran a chassis ground to the shield and the receiver quieted with the usb
plugged in...
I think that will fix the problem..
Thanks for your response and help, Erwin.

Re: Receive Noise with USB #cat

What pc screen or laptop screen do you have Doug? These LCDs produce a lot of noise close to a receiver . Even when in stand by and also when plug is still in power outlet when switched off .

Re: Help with my ubitx v6 kit

It would help those on this board to know if you have the Full kit or the Basic kit without the case.?

If the full kit, be sure you have plugged in the correct connectors.? There are a couple that look alike.

There are assembly instructions with pictures for the full kit on the HF Signals web page:

I do not have a v6 uBiTx, so I do not have any pictures that I can provide.? ?I would suggest that you verify the BFO adjustment to get the receiver working.? That seems tobe the most common problem for all of the HF Signals uBiTx radios.? Here is a link to a video that goes through the BFO and Frequency calibration:

If this does not help, you will need to wait for someone else to respond with a v6.

Help with my ubitx v6 kit

I just received my ubitx v6 full kil and as everyone has said, it took me approx 1 hour to put it together.? I plugged in my 12 volt 3 amp power supply and had the following problems.? I need some assistance to get the rig up?and running as correctly specified, but I have no test equipment.? ? ?

? ? ?1) I tuned across all band from lowest freq to highest freq and did no hear any QSOs on any band - neither CW nor SSB.? Approx every 50K, I heard a loud squeal, but that?was all.? Could someone provide a picture or text of how the plug is wired so I can make sure it is soldered correctly?
? ? ?2) When I tried to call CQ, I pushed the PTT switch?on the mic but nothing happened.? I am assuming?that the mic is defective or miswired, but could someone provide a picture or text of how the plug is wired so I can at least make sure it is soldered correctly? ?

? Thank you for your assistance.

I’m doing something similar with my v5. I use SDR-Console software with an RTL-SDR. ?It uses OmniRig to manage the CAT control. OmniRig has settings to change offsets for the different modes.

Hi Aaron,

I not used MeSquares, but have done quite a bit of "dead bug" construction (which is just placing parts - upside down or not - over an unetched PCB).? Basically I just follow the schematic as it pretty much already organizes the parts in the place you want them on the board.? Start with the receiver antenna connector (or short piece of coax or twisted line) and just start building out.? The receive bandpass filter is first, then the RF amp, mixer, etc all follow.? The build will probably end up long an narrow, but that is good as it keeps the higher level signals away from the lower level ones.? Reading the description of Farhan's build you will see he did it this way too.? You might want to build the VFO, BFO, and AF amp on separate PCB's.? This will allow you to shield the RF one's and also allow you to keep the build from getting too long.? For sure I would put the PA on a separate board.

When soldering parts to the ground plane, remember that is one big piece of copper that you are heating up.? It will take higher heat and a longer heating time than the parts.? Clean then wet the tip of the iron with fresh solder, place the tip on the board where you want to solder, and wait until solder placed on the PCB near the tip will melt by itself.? Then you can place the part to be soldered to it onto the board.? This will keep the part from over heating.

You can place parts upside down or rightside up -- whatever is easiest and makes connections the simplest.

73,

Mark

PS:? Ferrite core toroids or old TV baluns will work much better than tap washers for transformers and inductors as the designer found out in the end.

PSS: If you can't find Toko type transformers for the bandpass filter, you can use fixed inductors and accomplish the filter adjustment by making the capacitors variable instead (trimmer caps).?

Re: uBitx V5 can't make a contact on ft8

Thanks Nigel for helping me understand more about audio levels? and how having a power meter will help me get those correct!

And thanks for the others who suggested getting the cheap cb power/swr meters for $20-$25, I found one that was suggested on amazon and ordered it. I'm sure it will give me enough information to get it working much better and combined with getting my antenna up higher, I'm sure I'll be on my way!

?Gavin,
I agree with Scott’s antenna suggestion. Another improvement I discovered was to use a USB dongle sound device (see below, the one I use) The sound volume and quality are greatly improved compared to direct to computer connection.
You will have to make sure the PTT connection from the dongle is disconnected or it will constantly trigger your TX.
I eventually mounted a second set of 3.5mm jacks on the back of my rig (wired to the audio jack) through a selector switch (Dpdt on-off-on) on the front of my rig.
