Re: Flrig and uBitX not connecting

I had downloaded Flrig from the W1HKJ site, version 1.3.44, when I was trying to use it. I've deleted it from the computer now as it did not work.

Is anyone else using Flrig?

Re: How to stop worrying and love the uBitx #ft8 #cat #antennas #ubitx

Hi,

Good things come to procrastinators... This KV4QB site has a lot of interesting Ham related microprocessor projects. Including adding a TFT display to a uBitx. And a cool simulated analog meter using a small OLED display.?

He has a project for a 63 db step attenuator using eBay attenuator modules. I recently bought two to do the same thing. And when that day comes I have some spare time I was going to hash together some kind of Arduino code to control them. Right there on his site is code to do just that. Maybe if I stay busy with client projects, my soldering iron will build the thing for me (Maybe like Disney's Fantasia. Although I seem to remember things went terribly wrong when inanimate objects were set off to do work). Well, maybe, procrastination won't be rewarded at that level.

Hi Vince, Wayne... It's based on work done by DuWayne KV4QB -
I have a few spare boards if you are interested...

Re: Look at this on eBay, ubitx, budget test equipment.

I bought one of these signal generators (FY6600) about a year ago. It can do everything I require for HF and is accurate enough for my needs. It has a lot more functions than I expect I will ever use seriously. it is quite entertaining playing around with it? though if you have a scope available.? I am a? bit on the careless side (see bin of dead Arduino nano's by my bench) and have not managed to damage it yet.? On the not so good side the screen is a bit small but the PC application that you can download for it solves that. A couple of locks ups requiring a re-start and thats about it. Cant go far wrong at the price I think.?

Re: treble only SSB modulation

You may like to hear your modulation yourself with another receiver. You transmit into a dummy load and you receive without any antenna. I have ver. 3 and has no basses, say lower than 500hz. Listening to my SDR receiver I like my modulation a lot! Excellent for dx. I had generally excellent reports. However I trust more of what I hear myself than the reports by others. Not always their carrier is yours, they might have strange settings in filters, pbt etc

I wonder? if this a known and common problem, although I was not able to find something related while browsing the group's messages.

For information, I just use the electret mike as delivered with my V3 board.

Any comments ?

Re: #ubitx #ubitx-help #ubitx #ubitx-help

Hey Curt,

This past weekend, I was able to receive some distant phone and CW signals with none of the garbling that I heard this evening. Unfortunately, this evening, everything sounded garbled to me, even things that my friendly neighbourhood test subject was not transmitting. I'll try to work through your calibration guide.

Thanks,

Jon

3 blocks is dreadfully close. How do more distant signals sound? Receivers do overload when signals are huge.

Possibly also your ubitx may need the bfo adjusted. See my most recent message for a link to a calibration guide.

Take care and enjoy the radio building experience. Look around this site and see my stumbles if you wish. Meanwhile you have a cool rig to experience.

#ubitx #ubitx-help #ubitx #ubitx-help

I've recently built a ubitx and hooked it up to a GR5V antenna that I borrowed from a member of my local radio club. This evening, I was working with a friend of mine who lives three blocks away to test the rig, but ran into some interesting problems.

When he transmits, his signal comes in very loud, but his voice is garbled. If I move a few kHz around the frequency that he's transmitting on, the pitch of his voice varies, but it remains garbled. It sort of sounds like the teacher from Charlie Brown crossed with a robot from an 80s kids movie, and I can't make out any of the words that he's saying.

If I transmit, he gets a similar effect, wherein my voice is loud but very garbled, and comes along with a high pitched carrier that he can hear whenever I'm transmitting.

For both tests, we were on 20M, around 14.247MHz. The antenna that I'm using is very homemade, and it probably isn't mounted high enough off the ground, but the fact that I'm hearing the signal loud and clear, but that it's garbled makes me think that the problem is with my radio rather than with the antenna configuration.

What can I do to troubleshoot this issue?

I've attached a couple of recordings of the problem. Hopefully somebody recognizes the problem from listening to them.

Thanks,

VA3JFZ

The one looks to be the amplifier and filter module to me.

Using any antenna tuned to an HF ham band helps to mitigate against the "invasion" of interference from nearby AM broadcast band signals. So with a 20m dipole you *should* be OK. Are you near an AM broadcast transmitter site? Do those carriers have modulation on them?

Thanks Curt. Okay that¡¯s the filter I was going to get as well. I also saw the blog where the blog suggested to increase bias voltage. I am also waiting for a similar sized heatsink too, next will be a case for the filter and amp.?

I took a look at it.? Simple, straight-forward, and most of the features I consider critical - you can do a lot with that.? If the battery test puts a small load on the battery while testing, that's a nice extra.? The small size is also a plus... and the voltage rating is sufficient for most uses.? (I wouldn't want to test a 480vac line with it!)

I'd be careful with the amps testing... no fuse.? A good idea would be to make an adapter that fit in the amps socket, which had a 10a fast-blow fuse that was replaceable.? They also have a time limit for that sort of tests, and I'd consider that the absolute maximum (better to be extra careful).?

All in all, not too shabby... good for general use.?? I'd use one for a "tool-box" meter.

Re: treble only SSB modulation

Laurent

my best guess is the BFO calibration is off - shifting you passband to the high side.? possibly you might hear similar distortion on receive??

try the instructions here, as required

(use CTRL click to launch the url - it goes to the K3PZN ubitx page)

the only other consideration is some ubitx owners report low transmit drive - see if you wattmeter at least moves on transmit?

Re: Flrig and uBitX not connecting

Sorry, I'll take it back.
I just read that you wrote WSJTSX worked and checked the source code
? Init_Cat(38400, SERIAL_8N1);
? initSettings();
? initPorts();???
38400 is correct after all.

What version of flrig do you use? I mean when was it released? I think I remember the rig control library once had a problem.....

Sascha

Re: Flrig and uBitX not connecting

Hi Vic,

I think you are using the wrong baud rate. Try changing to 19200 Baud - that should do the trick.
The correct speed is hardwired within? KD8CECs firmware. You can change it of course, but then you need will have to recompile the source code again.

Good luck

Sascha

Re: How to stop worrying and love the uBitx #ft8 #cat #antennas #ubitx

?Looking at two pictures, it looks to be a NANO with a TFT, maybe touch screen?
?Interesting, being as I just received two NANOs, though planned to use one to make a clone of a raduino.
?Maybe both, in the back of my mind.
?For a dummy load, I havea commercial grade 100-110 watt dummy load that I got on Ebay some years back. It uses an RF resistor mounted to a large heat sink, well worth what I paid for it.
?I do have to use a UHF to N adapter, as it has an N connector.
?Lots better than the Cantenna was. Lighter, no worry about spilled oil of whatever type.
?I used transformer oil in the one I built. MY brother may have used mineral oil in his, being as he was less likely to search for, and find a source for transformer oil. Mine did leak a teeny amount through the pressure vent, just enough to make an oil/dust mix, LOL.
?Anyway, I'd kinda like to build this mini dummy load with meter for QRP testing.
