Quick digital mode question

Hi all,?

i am about to connect my Raspberry Pi via a usb souncdard to the uBitx.

in relation to the mic out from the rig to the sound card - does the dc voltage present on the tip of the plug (for the electret mike) pose a problem? I am confused as to whether or not I should add a capacitor in line to block the dc? Should I, and would that even work?

thanks.

Daimon. G4USI.

Re: RF power chain mods and improvements..

Andy,

Don't grind weller bits as they are copper coated with iron (I think). Copper tips wear out quickly as the
solder dissolves copper.

works. The only problem with it is that when it gets hot it bends
easily so you have to be careful about the pressure you put on it.

Re: Consider the Bitx40, clean and cheap for 40m

?I have several thoughts on how to go about it.
?One is buying the BITX20 board set that uses the diodes and toroids for the mixers, and making a small board or two to use toroids as band pass filters.
? Another is to use small perf boards and making it modular.
?I could also salvage parts from and old CB, or possibly transformers and coils from a low band Mocom I have that is junk anyway. Using it for parts.
?I would not try making an analog VFO, but rather one of the DDS units I plan to build. I can use? caps other than compression type.
I don't really like those. Only good for AM broadcast radios anyway, IMO
?I have some assorted caps I picked up that would work fairly well. Need a project or two for some anyway.
?The bare boards I already have are going to be BITX20 anyway.
?I spend more tome planning than doing lately.

Re: Your Must Have Mods!

See other threads for addressing spurious. Our group build is adding a 45 MHz filter stage, and using a daughter board with relays. It seems to be an adequate and reproducible fix, we will know soon. We have spectrum analyzer access to verify, and if all 23 units pass, that would help builders who can't measure it. If this works, perhaps someone could offer a kit, as costly for an individual builder to have a board made and order the parts. I don't myself know source, but board file is available from someone.

Some AGC would be nice. The ND3T circuits are simple and seem reproducible. I don't myself need RF attenuation. But maybe I need the ham a mile away to hit me! We do meet when I do ft8. I am thinking most ubitx ops won't need rf attenuator.

I am using an external nescaf for cw and ssb filtering.? it works nicely at end of audio path. In my use I don't need the center filter control, just bandwidth.

Updating firmware for CAT interface seems natural.

Maybe a speech processor, but he careful not to add gain, there is no alc here.

If I ever use it on 160m, I am content to then make an external LPF.

As this becomes main or only rig for some ops around the world, all these things I mention should be low cost additions. We can wish for them in v5, but meanwhile many existing v3 and v4 owners need an easy path to get them.

Curt

Re: Your Must Have Mods!

According to the reviews, you also have to get your own schematic.
And measure part values, as the caps are not identified.
Glad it worked for you, but this might not be a good option for many.

In my opinion, anybody putting a 70W amp on their uBitx
should have access to some sort of spectrum analyzer.
And know how to use it.

Re: Your Must Have Mods!

BPF would be a strong guarantee no overloading would be heard in the receiver (except for strong signals within the bandpass). Others have pointed out that brand transceivers have BPF in the TX chain. In my opinion for what it values, BPF have usually a loss, even if small like 3db would mean to many other changes in the TX chain. A RX only BPF plus the preamp close to the txrx relays would be much easier being essentially an add on. The ubitx claims to be rather robust to overload but in any case every receiver gets some benefit from BPF, I often use them, in contests with close neighbours is mandatory. I would add a switchable attenuator as well - 6, - 12, - 18db. This is my two eurocents.

What are everyone's thoughts on a good LPF kit?? I have looked at Tees and QRP versions.? Is one easier to integrate with the uBITX or are they near identical?? Have seen some posts about relay switching software changes required for the Tees version?

Also through reading, I have seen posts saying that a LPF and BPF are required for the uBITX to operate properly???

I would greatly appreciate any details on the if needed and the best/easy to integrate LPF and BPF kits/designs!

Thanks!

Re: Your Must Have Mods!

I? don't think a RX preamp is really needed. - 107dbm signal is clearly audible. However some 'digital hash' or artifacts could be buried by noise floor and this would be good. Being without BPF It should have high IMD figures, like the modern MMICs have.

?I don't know if I will add a TX amp or not. I will be working with BITX40s and BITX20.
?If I need that much power, I can simply use my 706 MK II G.

?A good antenna made for the frequency in 8use is far better than a random tuned with a tuner.

?And I found out that adding 75 meter legs to a 40 meter antenna was like adding both a preamp and a linear. A heck of a lot of difference. For 75 meters, that is.

Re: Ubitx v4 Raduino goes into Band Select menu during modulation

I had the same issue, however on 20m.? Traced it to rf riding the coax braid back from an off center fed dipole (MFJ-2010).? Solved it by grounding the shield before the radio, and placing a ferrite snap on core over the coax (RG8x) between the ground point and the connection to the radio.

Tried the ground only first, and it helped (could raise the power out to 6 watts), then added the ferrite to get it back to peak at 14 watts without causing the menu selection.? I did not have any issues on 40m.

My setup (using RG8x, PL259 connectors and PL259 Lightning arrester for grounding) is:

uBitx ======== SWR/PWR Mtr== Arrester ======== OCFD

Ubitx v4 Raduino goes into Band Select menu during modulation

I have a v4 uBitx. I just installed the SM2166 mic preamplier per instructions on ubitx website.?
The radio works very well except this. If I try to push the mic preamp over a 2-3 watt output on 40 meters, the Raduino acts like I pushed the menu button and thinks I want to change the band. The TX continues and the output can be adjusted to be as high as 20 watts with this board. the CW output is around 20 watts on 40 meter. Simply pushing the menu button will clear this error when the TX is finished. If I adjust the mic preamp down to the point it won't do this I have less output than I did before.?

Any suggestions would be most helpful.?
Thanks.
