Re: Transmit Problem

I had the same problem when transmitting with the mike (not CW) ?which I couldn't resolve with the solutions proposed in the posts I could find.

I resolved the issue by installing a capacitor between the red wire (PTT) and the yellow wire (ground) on the Arduino plug. ?Unsure of the value however the red square caps read:
WIMA
0.1
100-
RD or RQ (not clear)

DIGITAL FREQUENCY READOUT

MAYBE I AM MISSING SOMETHING, BUT ARE ALL uBITX V4.3 RADIOS HAVE A ONE KHZ LOW READOUT. FOR EXAMPLE, IF I HAVE A STATION ON 7.150 SELECTED, IT READS OUT 7.149 FOR CLEAR RECEPTION. IS THIS NORMAL?

Re: Tool advice: contemporary oscilloscopes and Spectrum Analyzers

That's a very good deal for somebody, and a very kind offer.
20mhz of BW is good enough to debug stuff at 40 and 80 meters,
and maybe a little higher too if you know what to expect.
Suitable scope probes are $5 from the Chinese suppliers.

Hmm.
Sounds like some future uBitx v5 may prove interesting.
The QSX looks promising too, but not very hackable.

Re: Tool advice: contemporary oscilloscopes and Spectrum Analyzers

I had gotten an old CRO on ebay for $40, delivered, but it was only two channels and 20mhz bandwidth, too low for anything except audio stuff. I gather this one might have been used for automotive sound system work. Instead, I have a?Rigol DS1054Z that I got on Amazon for about $350. They're at $375 on Amazon right now. I lucked out, and it had a big bundle of features on it, including all the analyzer stuff they usually sell you as a separate unlock code. It's only a 50mhz unit, but I got the unlock code that bumped it up to 100mhz, and it has the benefit of being a 4-channel.

I also have an Digilent Analog Discovery 2, a nice device for portable and educational use, and I backed the Espotek Labrador development project, which resulted in a simple $29 w/free shipping 2-channel DSO with a bunch of other features, suitable for plugging onto a breadboard for project development. Here's the feature list from the website:

about Labrador:?Labrador is an all-in-one tool for electronics students, makers and hobbyists. Just plug your Labrador board into a PC (Windows/Mac/Linux), Raspberry Pi or Android device via a MicroUSB cable, load up the software and you instantly have the following engineering tools at your disposal:

  • Oscilloscope (2 channel, 750ksps)
  • Arbitrary Waveform Generator (2 channel, 1MSPS per channel)
  • Power Supply (4.5 to 15V, 0.75W max output, with closed-loop feedback)
  • Logic Analyzer (2 channel, 3MSPS per channel, with serial decoding)
  • Multimeter (V/I/R/C)
It's a useful little gadget that the developer is still improving with more features in the software. The only problem I had with it was the abysmal serial support in recent versions of Linux. The thing worked fine in 14.04, but starting with 16.04 the drivers wouldn't see the thing when you plugged it in. Since my bench machine was an old laptop with Linux installed, that was a bit of an issue. So I bit the bullet, and bought the Rigol and a small Asus Win10 machine for the bench. They work quite nicely now.

If anyone is in the Philadelphia area and would like an old BK Precision 2-channel CRO, drop me an email. I'm willing to give it away. But you buy your own probes, I bought probes for it that I'm using with the Rigol now.

Re: Harmonics and Relay Replacement

Ben, NO5K, ran some Smith Charts on a "pristine" V3.0 board (thanks Gene, WB4KTF) followed by ONLY changing the the relays to AXICOM relays .....same fixture setup, 50 ohm antenna termination, same cables, same test gear. The harmonic attenuation plots show somewhat better harmonics reduction with the AXICOM relays but the rolloff (a filter characteristic) is basically the same between the two as you would expect them to be.

The Smith Charts are basically the same between the two relays (Original and AXICOM) and tell the story. It's not the relays themselves in my opinion. It's the coupling from board layout, coupling between relays, coupling across relays, and wire routing ......resulting in wide swings from reflected capacitive impedance to reflected inductive impedance in the filter frequencies (.....like in filter passband frequencies, filter roll off frequencies, and filter stop band frequencies) and presenting that reflected waveform back into the PA section.? ?

As I mentioned earlier the AXICOM relays DO show improvement but it's not the whole story.

The attached charts are small, but can be expanded. The goal is to get the general idea.??

Re: Tool advice: contemporary oscilloscopes and Spectrum Analyzers

If he is only interested in HF stuft, then he can build the specan over ten evenings. On the other hand, if he is interested in VHF and UHF, then the Rigol DS815 with tracking generator is best. He will also need a variable attenuator, a fixed power attenuator, a dozen cables and an audio tone generator, an RF two tone generator. These accessories are all easily build at home.
About 5 years ago, when the specan bug bit me (while doing the Minima), I looked around for a used specan. I finally located one in bangalore for 100,000 rupees (about 1500 usd). I was almost ready to put down that money when I decided to try building one for a month before buying one. I ended up building the specan. I did ultimately buy the Rigol specan too as I needed UHF coverage for building the exseedsat.
If there is sufficient interest, we all can pool efforts to produce a kit for the specan. We should shoot for an $100?bag of parts and PCB. The unfortunate challenge of building the specan is that it needs extensive shielding. Hence a particular layout, with shields, is mandatory. This maybe out of thr capability of thr current 'paint by numbers' team of HF Sigs.
Happy Diwali to all!

Jack, imho, CW is surprisingly alive and well, and how many years or
dfecades since its requirement was removed? I believe that, outside
of the fact that in an emergency CW is the most reliable mode, that IT
IS FUN TO LEARN AND USE. It is a game, and the entire millenial
attitude towards smartphones is about games and using their "toy".
The fun of CW and achieving proficiecy in it keeps it alive. -- Rich

That was then...this is now.
My experience with HT's is that young kids today have cell phones and, more
than once, I've been asked: "Why get a license when I can do the same thing
on my cell phone?" I point out that with ham radio, you can control things
yourself...you don't need a cell tower. I usually point out that the storm
in Sandy Hook, NJ, took out every mode of communications except ham radios.
In some cases, we were the only means of communication. Be prepared for
similar questions.
Another issue I've mentioned before: Our club had a GOTO station at Field
Day and we had a 13 year old who talked to a guy in CA and was so excited he
could barely contain himself. After about an hour at the radio, his mother
showed up and he literally burst telling her what he had just done. She
said: "It looks like a wonderful hobby, but where are you going to get the
thousands of dollars for the radio?" The boy looked like he had been
shot. This is where I would drag out a ?BITX, hold it up, and say: "Add a
battery, a $20 antenna, $130, a license, and you can start talking to the
world yourself."? I think a low-cost entry point is important to lawn-mowing
budget (scout-aged) people and their parents.
Your planned activity is a great one and I'm sure they'll have fun doing it.
That said, I would have some pictures of your rig at home and tell them
that, with it, you have made friends and talked with people all over the
world.

Now, if someone can just tell me how to sell learning CW to my club members,
I'll die a happy camper. You'd be amazed how many people have to re-arrange
their sock drawer on the very day I suggest for a CW class...

Working a little DX can be exciting for the scouts. Do you have any wiresX repeaters in the
area. It can be a great show to listen to hams in So.Africa, New Zealand, America all talking
together on a handheld on two meters. I set up a demo years ago using a computer and a tran-
sceiver and they could read the morse code on the display (the contact was Iowa to England)
A backup plan would be to use echolink.

All kidding aside, Doug's right.? Need to figure out what they are interested in.
Though they may not know they'll be interested in something
if they have never heard, seen, or smelled it.
(A KW tube rig smells of frying dust and a hint of ozone, which might be novel.)

Maybe have a half dozen different things to expose them to briefly,
then go back and spend more time on whatever it is that they show interest in.
