Re: End Fed antennas w/ uBITX #ubitx

I think everyone here knows that, when working QRP, the antenna system is a HUGE factor in one's success, or lack thereof. The good news: I'm fortunate in one manner, in that I am surrounded by 80' trees on almost 3 acres. The bad news: The XYL will not abide ANY antenna that is visible. She voted this one down:

Inline image

My antenna situation poses a true dilemma (i.e., two choices, both bad), in that I really enjoy QRP work, but with my crappy EFHW, I really need more power to be effective. So, any time I see an antenna article that might even hint at being stealthy, I'm reading it. Indeed, I would like to see more posts about people who are successfully using their ?BITX with stealthy antennas. When JackAl is done, a mag loop and controller are in my future.

I really fail to see a serious problem with this thread. Sure if ppl don't like a bit of controversy and vigorous discussion then by all means hide the thread but personally? I have learned more from this thread than any other I can remember in the bitx20 group.

Now Ill just have to build a couple efhw? antennas and and do some hands on testing.

Re: uBITX HF transceiver and blue MBITX metal case.

Hi, Jim

With regard to the demise of RS-232, it's important to remember that these same UARTS support RS-422 and RS-485 multi-drop. These protocols are still in wide use (particularly RS-485) in industrial settings because of robustness, simplicity and economy as compared with (for example) Ethernet in the same setting. USB is strictly point-to-point and, while offering good bandwidth, is greatly distance limited compared with 422/485.
?USB is also generally lacking the fully isolated solutions that are often required between "unfriendly" components.

For example, if you want to control something slightly smart up on a tower 500 ft away, isolated and slew rate limited RS-422 is the way to go. USB won't work and copper Ethernet's distance limit rules it out.. Fiber would be nice but gets pricy and complex - and you still likely need power wires.

In short, while most common applications of RS-232 can be replaced by USB (as long as you have some real smarts at both ends), the RS-422/485 applications are still out of reach.

Just my opinions, of course.

Looking at the groups.io website in my chrome browser, the bottom of each message shows
? ? "Reply",? ? "Like",? ?and? ?"More",? ? the? "More" expands to? "All Posts By This Member",? and "Report This Message".

No "Mutes this Topic" that I can find.
Perhaps I've missed it somehow, let me know if that's the case as it would be quite handy.

Perhaps you are using some email reader that allows you to reject a thread.
Unfortunately, not everyone does.

Regardless of whether I can kill a thread, I think the ability to move a discussion that
large numbers of forum members would just as soon not see would be a real plus on occasion.
Unlike an email exchange (also an alternative), anyone with any interest at all could follow
the conversation in that other forum.? Or sample it occasionally when they have time to kill.

Re: uBitX SSB transmit oscillations on 20m only #ubitx

Bruce,

I dont know if you fixed this problem. Here are some ideas.

Try a shielded wire for microphone inside the enclosure. You MUST use shielded wire for the mic cable outside as it may pick up TX RF.

Solder a 1000pf cap across the socket.

Formula I followed in the 70s for mic mixers was to insulate the jack from chassis. You could screw on an acrylic sheet
piece to your panel and mount the mic jack on it.. but you need to enlarge the chassis hole so that the jack does not ground.

First a correction. The distorted output is on 20m not 40m. Now that's embarrassing! A form of ham dyslexia perhaps?

Audio feedback? Although I had gone through all the bands with no distorted output, I have been mostly comparing 20m with 40m. Distortion-feedback on 20m, clean on 40m. I just went back through all the bands and noticed that I hear a little audio from my speaker as I go up the bands. 80m, 60m, and 40m are good with a clean signal on the 'scope, nothing from the speaker. 20m is badly distorted with feedback and garbled audio from the speaker. 17m and up (in frequency) clean signal but faint audio from the speaker.

Re: Receive pitch shifts when confirming.... #arduino #ubitx #ubitx-help

Michael,
Now that you are on frequency you can adjust again the BFO. BFO frequency differs from unit to unit depending on the filter passband. If the pitch on receive is too low you should increase your BFO frequency, or lower it if the pitch is too high. From your IF shift required I guess your pitch is low. Play with BFO (carrier) frequency a little and see if you can get the sound you like.
My RV1 setting is about 90% and I get 12 W on 80, 10 W on 40, 7 W on 20. Power out drops to 1.2W at 28.4 MHz. All those powers are CW, key down, not SSB, measured into a dummy load using the power meter on a MFJ antenna tuner.
This has been discussed a lot and is the result of components used. You can try some of the hardware mods and find what works for you. Mine is stock, running at 12.8 V provided by a linear, 6 A capable power supply.
On SSB my power was low, so I had to increase the microphone amplifier gain.
I did not measure the carrier suppression, so I have no reference number for you.
I hope this help.
