I listen to 20m in the daylight most of the time and then 40/80 at night I will have to head to 80 in the day and see whats around.

Yeah, I was running 120. Band must have gone long. I was just on a net on 3929 that ended just before 7 and some stations from Virginia and Iowa were checking in near the end. I'm on 3930 every day in case you ever happen to be on.

Re: Erratic tuning with my new uBitx

I had thought the original firmware shipped with the rig was good enough.
Could look for trouble with a DVM or scope on the black and brown wires to the encoder (ENC_A and ENC_B in the wireup diagram),
should see each wire periodically switch between 0 and 5v when slowly turning the knob.
They get pulled high through resistors internal to the Nano, and the encoder sometimes shorts them to ground.

Re: Broadcast band interference, uBitx

Did it stop at sunset?? AM broadcast stations reduce power at night.? My local station is 1000W during the day, 196W at night.

I've called you a few times. Guess you're not hearing me either.

Re: Looking for Completely Functional Dual-Band 20/(17/15/10/6) Meter QRP Rig with SSB/PSK #bitx20help

Anything that doesn't break in the weather is thick enough, within limits.
Drive 1000 Watts into 28 gauge copper, it may fall out of the sky into little molten puddles on the ground.
And kind of a bummer to have to go out and climb trees to fix broken antenna wire during an ice/wind/rain storm.
Galvanized steel is less conductive than copper,? I doubt you would notice the difference, except it's stronger.
Copper clad steel is available, seems a good idea, I've never used it:??
Hard drawn copper is stronger than standard copper wire, often used for antennas.
You may have a local HRO storefront:?
they have lots of different antenna products.
Disconnect your equipment if an electrical storm is in the area.

For QRP I'd only need #17?

There's a write-up on this type of wire purchased from tractor supply stores, entitled, Does wire gauge (size) make any difference for vertical antenna radials?, at eHam.net.

They say that some antenna manufactures suggest 14. I guess that is possibly because it is used for base stations with 100 or more watts.

However, for my specific QRP & mobile situation, maybe 17 would be fine. It would also be a bit lighter.

Would reception improve if it were copper? Or, maybe for something like this it wouldn't really matter.

Erratic tuning with my new uBitx

My new uBitx is up and running on receive (it also transmits but I haven't wired the mike yet). ?However, tuning is very erratic. ?Sometimes while tuning it suddenly makes large frequency jumps. ?Other times, I can turn the encoder and the frequency doesn't change. ?I"ve tried poking at connections etc, looking for something lose, but nothing shows up. ?Could I have a bad encoder? ?
Thanks

Re: Broadcast band interference, uBitx

Thanks for all these suggestions. ?Mysteriously, the problem has disappeared. ?However, it may be that the station is off the air. ?I see what happens tomorrow. ?One note: ?I did not have the problem with the antenna disconnected.

If the problem comes back, I'll start with your suggestions.
