Re: wrong frequency after software change. #ubitx

Interestingly, Ians software doesn't confuse the LSB and USB. It starts out with LSB on 80. It is possible to make it go to USB on any Band. My upload into the former BITX40 raduino was almost perfect with CEC1.01 (Ians). It doesn't sound really good though and I believe its a "bfo adjustment" which is possible with that software. I'll try that tonight. . It won't work with the original ino from Ashhar. Not correctly anyway.?

Switching TX and RX?

The Coaxial change over relay or just Coaxial Relay has no problems, it is either in
RX or in TX.

CX-230 SPDT with 3 X BNC RF connectors is one example. ?

I will have my uBitx in a metal case,so maybe just making an adapter with a dead short at the antenna connection during transmit will be a good solution.

Does anyone know if the LDG Z-817 autotunner will work with the uBITX HF General Coverage Transceiver?

Re: uBitX - problem with power draw and failed chip

Hi Raj,
I received the replacement TDA2822 today, so I removed the bad chip, replacing it with a socket. Socketing a new 2822, I fired up the board and am pleased to report the board is now drawing just a hair under 90ma, and nothing has exploded. I think I am back on track.
I won't be able to finish the wire-up until next week, because I am traveling for the next few days, but I think the rest will go according to plan.
Thanks for the help

I’m having a blast on 160m I did add larger heat sinks and a pair of small fans that I can turn on and off as needed to keep the finals cool if I’m long winded or using digital modes.

I think what you are seeing is the "normal" variation in the
output of the MOSFETS. Some are better than others at RF.

Gordon's suggestion to turn back the drive is probably the right answer.
Alternatively, you could turn down the gate voltage a bit, but that
would probably introduce compression distortion. Or you could increase
the size of the heat-sink and see how it goes. Probably the wisest thing
to do is both turn back the drive a bit and increase the heat-sink.

Some, but not all, IRF510's are capable of 20W or more on 80m.
you might happen to have some good ones. The key lies in the
harmonic generation and the heat-sinking.

Note that what you are seeing MAY be from UHF oscillation included in
the signal. Be very aware of that. Check your output very carefully.

Re: BITX40: Allard's Firmware with Rotary Encoder?

Thank you Jack, I'll take a look. I used a test sketch to make sure the encoder works, and it does, using interrupts. Works very nicely in fact, just grounding out the pulled up digital pins. I just need to figure out how to get the tuning routine I have into a more full features sketch :)?

Did you mean that you removed Q14 again, rather than R14, elevated like a 3 legged bug Mike? A metal cased transistor certainly could short to adjacent pads if f mounted flush to the pcb.

Mesure the voltage across the resistors and you know the resistors value. Calculate :if I remember right V2/R = Voltage squared divided by resistance to get the power dissipated. That should give you some insight on why the Rs are getting hot.

I have just finished chasing the smoking R141. Even after replacing the smd with an axial 1/2 watt, mounted vertically, it continued to get blazing hot after only 2-3 seconds of PTT. Be sure to check to see if it's still getting hot. After checking the obvious, rechecking all resistor values, double checking transistor voltages using Randy's chart. After replacing Q14, I still had the problem. I removed R14 again and mounted a new one, elevated like a 3 legged bug. Problem solved. My conclusion, with Q14 mounted tight to the board, there is a risk that the metal Q14 case will short to the board. An insulated spacer should be used or have been used, to keep this device up just a bit from the board. A friend suggested cutting the bottom of my case to access to the entire underside of the board. A great idea for new builders. BTW, I mounted the axial 10 ohm resistor through the tiny hole near it's original location. That connects to the bottom board foil ground, and one of my smd pa
ds were destroyed from unsoldering the burned R141.

New ideas for the Audio TX/RX pop and PA output stage improvements on ubitx.net

If you look on the home page of you will find suggestions from Erhard Haertel DF3FY that address:

  • Audio Pops on transitions from RX to TX
  • Improved output on all bands from the PA stage (using RDF16HHF1s and a new output transformer and minor changes to the circuitry).

Erhard had difficulty posting to the BITX20 iogroups list so wrote to me directly.? I have not tested these mods, but these are two concerns about the uBITx (loud audio pops and lower power out above 40m) so I am sure that Erhard would be as interested as me in any feedback from those trying out his mods.
