Re: Seperate group for uBITX ?

Seems like a good candidate for a new #ubitx tag. As long as messages are well curated by a moderator, it should be easy to keep things straight.

Seperate group for uBITX ?

Do you think we should have a seperate IO group set up for the uBITX project?

Folk talking BITX20 or BITX40 problems could get lost in the fog of the huge expected traffic that will get created when the uBITX gets shipped out and we all start working on them.

Just a thought anyway, don't all leap down at me!

Re: Reverse polarity diode circuit

Polyfuses are not difficult to find. Several manufacturers, even Littlefuse. I get mine from Jameco (P/N 199938) for 55 cents each (quan. 10).
Mouser and Digikey have them in surface mount, too. Not only good for reverse polarity protection (with diode), but for the occasional short circuit, too. 73, Don,ND6T

I used to be an e-cig dealer. All of my suppliers would send advanced
warnings of the last days to order before the Chinese New Year in order to
get it without the wait. All of our orders came via DHL tho, so China
Post and their version of customs weren't involved. DHL handles that
themselves.

Vince.

I really don't care how they do it, only that it seems to get to me
faster; usually less than a week. I really get nervous about ordering from
China at this time of the year as economic activity there seems to stop
dead in its tracks around the Chinese New Year. I remember waiting 6 weeks
last year for an order.

The better news, you can get them all day long from Tayda for 16 cents
each. But they only have 119,418 of them in stock.?? To the US, shipping
from Tayda is only a week for their slow boat shipping. Tayda's minimum

Yup, a Polyfuse works great.
Can add a resistor and red LED across it as an idiot light so you know

(Can also do that for a fuse)

Though Farhan is looking for stuff that's easy to scrounge, doubt a
Polyfuse will make it into the next rev.
A small diode for both reverse protection and overcurrent protection on
the main rig might be the best bet.

Re: uBITX vs HW-8

Heh - yeah, there are better candidates than the HW-8, although the HW-8 is a more attractive size:

I have a dead (parts) HW-32 (not -A). The HW-32 is a terrible radio - problems with VHF oscillation on TX and such that weren't really solved until the HW-32A model. There were several factory 'mods' to address this, including the last one which had a perforated metal cage to fit over the final tubes to finally provide some shielding.

I believe I'll be cleaning it's enclosure up and re-purposing. It's only a little bigger than an HW-8.

I'd think most HW-8's (including dead ones) - if it's not been squashed beneath a truck tire - usually sell upwards of $130+ today.?WithOUT the matching HW-7-1 power supply.?

Re: uBITX dispolay

There is a tft touch control which works well with the bitx40.
I have just been in touch with my project friend VU2SPF, to modify the code to work with the new ubitx. He like myself (VE1BWV) are very interested in tackling this project.
We both have ordered ubitx rigs.

This project uses a 2.8 tft display with and atmega2560 and a si5351.
It can use different size displays but touch position may not be correct.
It offers all band control, colour display, and touch control and buttons for all functions.
Its up to user to choose which combination.

If you want to see videos on the display
just do a search on youtube
for vu2spf or UNIVERSAL TFT

You're going to love it! Also, it brings into play a bunch of very small, very inexpensive, transceivers that don't have SSB like the ?BITX. I'm hoping to teach a CW class sometime and, instead of using code practice oscillators (CPO), I want the class to each build their own Pixie ($5) the first day of "class" and then use that for the CPO...you can't buy a CPO for that! With a 50 Ω resistor, the class could send code to each other, which would make practice more fun. It's still in the planning stages.

The EF01 is 200mm wide x 175mm deep by 70mm high, so ?7.87" wide x 6.89" x 2.75"
I assume those are outside dimensions, inside would be about 1/4" less?
So height is getting close if you use the 1/2" standoffs supplied with the uBitx, but those could be removed.
Plenty wide to get all the controls in.
Heatsink should probably protrude out the back anyway so it gets some airflow and can be checked
occasionally to see if it's getting hot. ?Guess I'd figure out how to mount a heatsink with screws coming up

??
The 6.3" wide would be constraining, as Farhan suggests above we might want it wider to?
have a nice spot for a left hand volume control. ?But I could live with volume near the tuning knob.
And the aluminum bottom and back panel of that chassis should make a fine heatsink
for the IRF510's using TO220 insulating kits. ?Box is 7.3" deep, so might need a 0.5" thick plate of
aluminum between the IRF510's and the back of the box. ?Or could remount the IRF510's
to the bottom of the uBitx board and bolt them to the bottom of the box.
