WEB Based SDR (Software Defined Receivers):

There are many more of these available on-line.? Just do a Google search for
"websdr" and select the one(s) that look interesting.? You can now find WEB SDR's
in almost every country.? They are quite interesting to use to verify your signal
propagation to various locations.? Also a good way to monitor the quality of your
own BITX transmissions.

I really, really like WebSDR receiver site near San Francisco:?

?I¡¯ve been to the site and use it often. It has a massive HF antenna that is also used daily for receiving HF commercial airline traffic communications.?

It has many receivers on most Ham Bands.?

Enjoy!

I listened for a little while. After the net cleared outta 7.277 I heard
nothing there for the rest of the time I was listening. Never did hear
anything on the other two freqs mentioned. So I went back down to 7.074.

I also listened?? last night but was clobbered by the broadcast station on

A couple of BITX observations and a Pop question.

Hi gang...

??? I'm new to this list and coming up to speed on BITX40 mods. I started looking at the Raduino software to add a rotary encoder for improved tuning control, when I learned of this group a couple of weeks ago. I've since incorporated the Raduino 1.24 (maybe 1.25) software. Tuning is much improved, and many features have been added. I have stalled at making some of the hardware mods to the board until I can verify and understand the added features.

??? Starting first with an observation that may prove beneficial during troubleshooting that I didn't find in the history. I discovered that the multi-filar transformer windings are twisted many times more than necessary; putting them at risk of failure. This caused the enameled wire insulation to rupture and induce a part fart (R70) on my board after only a brief period of operating. A scan of the remaining transformers revealed this exposure exists on all of them. It's a bit of a pain to rewind and replace them in their mounting headers, so I've made a mental note to check them first when troubleshooting for failures down the road. I also think I alerted Farhan to this in an email, so new builds may have been screened for this.

??? CW is a mode of choice for me, so I was quite pleased to see early software support for this in Allard's most recent releases. I have been studying the hardware and Raduino software, and reviewing the posts relating to the mods. I struggled with understanding how the CW mode was implemented, but finally sorted it out. I'm confident that it works, but it uses a somewhat convoluted scheme to add (LSB) or subtract (USB) the sidetone frequency so the displayed transmit and receive frequencies match. :-)

??? I read that a "Pop" issue induced during PTT operation, has been identified and isolated with confidence to the powering up the Mic amp (Q12) as the root cause, but I'm uncertain it was resolved. Has anybody attempted to replace or bridge R127 with a forward biased diode (anode toward TX)? This snubs the R127/C124 (10 ms time constant) power-up delay by enabling C124 to charge instantly to within 0.7V of supply, and well within Q12's normal operating bias range. If this is indeed the root cause for the pop, the diode will prevent it.

Last night there was a net operating on 7.277 past 7PM EDT, so I proposed an alternate of 7.282 which was clear when I posted. I did manage to have a brief exchange with Tom, VE3THR? on that frequency. I stayed on there until 7:30 (when the Yankee game started; LOL) and didn't hear anyone else. I understand that later on, there was a QSO going on that frequency, so Jerry, W0PWE, tried 7.285 (not sure if you had any success there, Jerry).

Anyway, unless someone more familiar with 40 meter ops has a better idea, I would propose that we keep 7.277 as the primary frequency for now, but standardize on 7.282 and 7.285 as backup plan "A" and "B". I actually had one VFO set on 7.277 and the other on 7.282 last night so I could jump back and forth easily.

Please, I know there are a bunch of you who are regulars on Sunday night, so please give us your thoughts and let's come up with a plan we can all agree to so we're not scrambling at the last minute next week.?

I have converted my BITX40 to 20 meters.? I bought the qrp-labs Band Pass Filter and Low Pass Filter for 20 M and replaced the built in ones.? I think I made one change to the Raduino software to swap to 20 meters.? Works great on 20 M.? Definitely??remove C91 and C92?as VFO will be at 19 MHz for 40 Meters USB? and 26 MHz for 20 Meters -?

I'm well answered - we live with it and sneak what we can where and when we can (courteous always of course).

I had to ask - I'm a long-time V/UHF man, not on HF (yet!)

Re: Use of BitX40 for WSJT-X

Ryan

In this blog post: ?
you mention audio oscillations when the volume pot is at a minimum.
Maybe you have solved this, that's an old post. ?But if not:

Raj has found that the LM386 oscillates when the input pin is at a low impedance,
the solution is to add a 1k resistor between the volume pot middle pin and pin 3 of the LM386.
