A new thread.
This is for??Jerry Gaffke. Your idea about the center lug of the pot and A7 was exactly right. It jumped in voltage between 4.~ to 1.~ and was impossible to to hit a frequency. Disconnecting the center wire from the pot showed a smooth change in voltage up and down. And the voltage regulator on the side was almost too hot to hold. I followed your suggestion exactly with connecting the center lug to pin A6 blue wire, and changed it in the sketch. Now it works like it did at first power up. And now that it is working again, I connected the red pin of the 8 pin connector to ground. And it went into calibrating offset mode, which is different than when I had the PA separately?powered. At that time it would randomly indicate "Calibrating" then "Calibrated" when powered up, requiring me to power it off then back on again to work. Now that the Raduino is working correctly, I can start experimenting with some of the enhancements and modes of operation others have documented. And try to roll my own DDS VFO's for the experience. I want to tell everyone who helped thank you. And I apologize to those I offended. |

12 megahertz crystals 5 for a $1.. that's why I ordered 20. I have about 50 miniature 2-20pf caps, ( I bought somewhere for a $1 or 2 for all 50)? so I should be able to shift resonance a bit.. a simple frequency counter and a 2N2222 oscillator should be able to group those crystals into matched sets.. A sharpie to mark them A-U and a pad of paper to record each frequency.....yes and amplitude via a 200 mhz tektronics scope. Now do you really think hfsigs.com? is using first run crystals in a kit they sell for $59 shipped anywhere in the world? If you watch W5KUB's interview of owner Ashhar Farhan, VU2ESE about 2 weeks ago and available at W5KUB.COM he said he has a woman who tests and sorts hundreds of crystals at a time. One of the reasons to calibrate the VFO for best sound is because that's when you're in the band pass. and varies from rig to rig so the 4 may be matched but not to the 4 in the next guys rig. |

You can also buy rolls of adhesive-backed copper foil, which is commonly used for shielding electric guitars. Rich KC8MWG On Friday, January 27, 2017 4:28 PM, Lawrence Macionski via Groups.Io <am_fm_radio@...> wrote:

Easy to add-- aluminum flashing inside-- glue aluminum foil with contact cement or-- use use conductive paint.. a ham told me once (20+ years ago) he used aluminum fence paint.. he also used in on chain link fences and towers. Some guys use blank PC board material.. Scraps can be had a commercial board manufacturers. Copper clad boards they use come in 4x8 foot sheets. My son-in-law used to work at one. |
Re: BITX40 PTT Noise
Thanks Jerry - I guess I was looking too far back. Can anyone link to an example of how to implement such a mod? ?(Can anyone confirm that the transistor and associated bias bits needs to be installed around both C114 and C116 to do the job? ?Or are there others? ?My initial 'fear' was that I'd have to 'neutralize' caps in all of the bi-directional amps.) I have great respect for the experienced radio builders, engineers, and old Hams in the community. ?I'm none of those, however. ?What's 'obvious' to the pros doesn't yet trigger a memory of an example on page 12 of one of DeMaw's books. I'm workin' on it! ?:) Heading back into the bowels of the corporate knowledge... |
BitX40 sketch modified for new library
G4NQX
As mentioned elsewhere the new library for the SI5351 has minor changes to the calls. This causes compile errors if you just download the sketch and library. I've made a new folder in the files section and added the BitX40 sketch with minor changes to suit the new library calls.? I've also put the library zip file there for completeness. I hope to make a video of the steps necessary to upload the sketch to the Arduino Nano in the raduino.? That way any glitches requiring a re-program can easily be followed by anyone not familiar with Arduinos. Rob G4NQX |

Don't get factory seconds on crystals for a ladder filter (I have no idea what ALLELETRONICS has). ? They must be matched, and not just in frequency. ? This sounds like a significant project, let us know how it goes. ? I see three ways to do adjustable filtering: ? Mess with those crystal ladder filter caps. ?But could be difficult to do that while maintaining an optimum shape and minimizing insertion loss ? Have a dual conversion receiver, fiddle with one of the local osillators so the two crystal filters don't quite line up. ? Fiddle with the BFO frequency on a stock Bitx40 so the offending signal gets blocked by the crystal filter, clean up the result with an audio filter. I might try that third option someday. Re: BITX40 PTT Noise
Try post 20828: "Farhan mentioned this during his interview with Tom,?. He felt it was due to the cap C114 around the audio preamp Q16, holding the amp on for a bit when that rig is switched into transmit. I wouldn't be surprised that C110 might also be holding U1 on as well. ?He thought about placing a transistor across the cap to discharge it when going into transmit. Drive the transistor from the xmit?voltage." ? On Fri, Jan 27, 2017 at 10:17 am, AndyH wrote:

The point was ALLELECTRONICS have some very good deals than jameco-digikey-mouser . The "best deal" for me was 12 Mhz crystals at 5 for a dollar. I ordered 20..The BITX uses 4 in the crystal lattice filter..I want to play with perhaps 6-8 pole filters or even narrower or adjustable filtering. Something akin to: (CREDIT to ICOM 735 op manual) |
Re: BITX40 PTT Noise
Adding another relay apparently isn't a new idea, but one that apparently works. I'm still trying to find details of the mods Uli, DF5SF created. ?I haven't yet found details in further message searches or in the files section here or on the Yahoo group. /g/BITX20/message/3270?p=Created,,,20,1,0,0 There also appears to be the 'reed relay' mod: /g/BITX20/message/10973?p=Created,,,20,1,0,0::Relevance,,ptt+noise,20,2,0,4103578 I still can't find details of the 'transistor across the cap' mod. Re: Customer Noservice.
Also, try monitoring the 5v and 3.3v supplies at the Raduino with your voltmeter while twiddling that tune pot. ?Neither one should be moving. On Fri, Jan 27, 2017 at 08:36 am, Jerry Gaffke wrote:
Could be that the Nano has a blown IO cell at A7, and is injecting current into what should be strictly an input pin. ?Though I don't fully understand how this would give the symptom you describe. ? |
